i'm david culver. angie enjoying time off with the little one. at 8:30, this saturday morning, start you with your forecast. lauren ricketts, a lot of folks heading out, maybe do small business shopping? >> yeah. get out and support the small businesses do some shopping. perfect day to get out there and do shopping. no rain. no snow. sunshine out there now. certainly chilly as temperatures are climbing out of the 30s now and into the 40s, but a beautiful morning right now at 8:30 this morning. our day planner already at 42 inside d.c. outside the beltway, a little colder. steps still in the 30s. everybody warming through the 50s. topping out just around 60 degrees today. certainly warming up today, and big changes for your sunday. going to feel a lot colder on sunday and then we have a roller coaster of temperatures as we head through this workweek. we'll talk about that. especially if

tomorrow. overview of the entire united states, let you know the problem areas. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> ricketts, get in here. i need company. see you in a little bit. a d.c. police officer recovering after an accident with another car. this happened on the corner of nebraska avenue and military road in northwest. we know rescue crews took the officer from that scene with what we're told were minor injuries. the other driver is doing okay. our digital team will post updates in the nbc washington app. a capital heights man reliving tragedy second time this month. a house fire killing his mother this week. news 4's jackie bensen tells us, just a couple weeks ago he lost his dad. >> reporter: after a lifetime together, their deaths came just two weeks apart. his caused by illness. hers by the early morning fire that ripped through the capital heights home. lawrence and elaine james shared more than 35

their adult son lived with them. >> i feel so bad. just lost his father and now la to bumpy his mother. >> reporter: elaine became trapped in an upstairs bedroom. rescued but later died. her son treated for smoke inhalation. able to escape the burning home but could not get to his mother. >> he was out trying to get people to call 911. >> reporter: a firefighter also burned. he's recovering at a local burn unit, we had to deal with bars on windows and doors. and because of the very heavy fire conditions, reported somebody trapped, sent firefighters in. >> reporter: investigators say there were no working smoke alarms in the home. the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen. in capital heights, jackie bensen news 4. police are trying to find a second driver accused of hitting and killing a man in adelphi. prince george's police say serge dehenny was trying to cross the

a driver hit the man, stayed on the scene. then a second man also hit the man. investigators say the second driver may not have realized that he was injured there. also a big change coming to your smart trip card next year. starting january 8th, no longer allowed to carry a negative balance on your card. what does that mean? essentially you can't take a $3.50 trip when you only have $3 left and plan to reload later. metro says it lost, get this, $25 million over the past 17 years from riders who never reloaded after racking up that negative balance. right now retailers want those of you who may be kind of putting your feet up recovering from black friday to get back out there and think small. really, shop small. it's small business saturday. a day that encourages people to shop locally, putting money really back into our community. downtown at a store called shop maid in

>> reporter: indeed. the title says everything. talking about it. like every day after black friday has a name but this is the one you need to be concerned about today. shop local d.c. now, with me is stacy price, co-owner of shop maid in d.c. and support 50 businesses just with one shop. how do you do that? >> we are d.c.'s first dedicated to producers, full of artisans and we give them shelf space so they have access to consumers. >> reporter: that's the thing. helping the local artistic community, and also helping the economy. that's really important, too. can you estimate how much you might put into the economy just with these 50 businesses? >> economists say 67 cents of every dollar you spend in a local business goes back into your community. so we're a local business that supports local businesses. i'm not quite sure that what number is but i know it's good. >> reporter: indeed good. i've seen a lot of things i think would be great gifts today. especially the diaper with the d.c. logo on the back. that says it

you support here today. >> we're a store and a cafe. incubate some businesses. a coffee shop, small plains, a roasterie in northeast today. we are serving up breakfast tacos, and giving away free coffee all day long. >> reporter: sweet. making up the breakfast taco and you got this coffee in northeast. what was it like for you? had to be a challenge to get started with something like that? >> yes. we've been operating coffee shops almost ten years. when we decided to start roasting this year. since june, roasting coffee in northeast and a lot of fun. >> reporter: i smell you! in a good way, of course. so what do the people need to know today if they want to come down here? free giveaways, things like that. incentives to get people in? >> first of all, it's one place to go to across from dupont circle metro and support 50 businesses in that space. you can eat. you can drink. we have local beers on tap. and local cta

today mark as year since the death of fidel castro. the scene in cuba in the days following the revolutionary leader's passing. we were there bringing you coverage as mourners lined the streets during his funeral and memorial. castro was out of public view for a decade because of poor health. revered by some for bringing social reforms to cuba. also criticized for oppressing human rights and free speech. this week a vigil to mark one year since his death. egypt experienced what is its deadliest attack in history. this morning we learned that number of those killed has gone to more than 300. they were at a mosque yesterday. isis is suspected but not yet claiming responsibility. the attack started with an

next to the mosque. then a gunman fired at worshippers as they tried to run from the scene. the attacker set up ambush locations where they opened fire on ambulances as those crews were trying to transport people that got hit. >> islamic militants have been conducting attacks against security outposts, but an attack against a mosque really cross as new threshold. >> president trump responding on twitter calling out the attack, describing it at horrible and cowardly. the president also went on to reinforce his idea of building a border wall and implementing bans in order to tighten security here in the states. this weekend on "meet the press" with chuck todd, an exclusive interview with anita hill. the brandeis professor became a national figure in the early '90s accusing then supreme court nominee clarence thomas of sexual harassment. allegations he denied. crs

by los angeles police who expects even more reports against hollywood figures in coming months. weinstein denies all allegations of non-consensual sex. thurman, who starred in several of his films was asked to weigh in on the scandal last month. >> when i've spoken in anger, i usually regret the way i express myself. so i've been waiting to feel less angry. and when i'm ready, i'll say what i have to say. >> reporter: perhaps less angry now, but nonetheless, outrage. breaking the silence of another actress. >> these are stories that are not abating, and i think it's because women in hollywood and men who care about this want this not to be a moment but a transformational time in history. >> reporter: thurman didn't make specific allegations in her post, but left a warning -- stay tuned.

a sign that her battle may be just getting started. katie beck, nbc news. out in california now, another shark attack has hit the coast this time in pebble beac . thankfully two other beachgoers and sheriff's deputies were nearby, able to help the man bit. significant injuries to his leg. take ton a nearby hospital and he's in stable condition. the beach will stay open as officers continue to investigate that. we told you earlier about small business saturday in addition to shopping at your local stores, logon to etsy. etsy sellers now joining small business saturday hoping for a black friday-like boost in sales. nbc's kate rogers has the story. >> reporter: etsy seller matthew has been prepping for the holidays since october. the shopping season is key for this owner of a store in new
