time it's rattling capitol hill after long-time democratic lawmaker congressman john conyers announced he's stepping down from his seat as the leading democrat on the powerful house judiciary committee saying in a statement he's stepping aside from the position as the house ethics committee investigates allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him. all the while denying the allegations of misconduct. >> well, that news comes as another democratic lawmaker, this time senator al franken, is expected to walk through the halls of congress for the first time since he was hit with allegations of sexual misconduct. and now he's speaking out since those reports of misconduct came out over a week ago. for more we go to nbc's tracy pots. what can you tell us about what congressman nancy pelosi regarding scrutiny of her own what she said about conjerz? >> reporter: pelosi on "meet the press" seemed to defend him to some degree saying she hasn't really heard from his

process. just because someone is accused, was it one accusation, is it two? i think there has to be -- john conyers is an icon in our country. >> do you believe john conyers -- >> i don't know who they are, do you? they haven't really come forward. >> reporter: conyers said he's stepping down not because he's guilty of sexual misconduct. he denies the allegations, but because he said he doesn't want to be a distraction to the democrats' agenda while this ethics investigation is going on. meantime, al franken back here on capitol hill for the first time today saying he's coming back ashamed, but speaking out for the first time since he admitted sexual misconduct. >> i'm taking responsibility. i apologized to the women who have felt disrespected and to everyone i've let down. that's a lot of people. in some of these encounters, i've crossed the line for some women and i know that n

>> reporter: franken, too, will face an ethics investigation. he comes back here to capitol hill with a number of lawmakers ready to scrutinize those encounters that happened years ago. back to you. >> all right, tracy, thank you. and we should also note that later today embattled candidate roy moore will make his first appearance on the campaign trail. he's been out of the public eye for ten days after nine women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct. and while moore is strongly denied doing anything improper, the republican party has largely shunned him, except for the president. mr. trump issued his own implicit backing this weekend, tweeting this. the last thing we need in alabama and the u.s. senate is a schumer, pelosi puppet. doug jones, moore's opponent would be a disaster. >> one of the nation's biggest massage chains is under scrutiny over its handling of nearly 200 sexual assault claims. buzz feed news reports over 180 daises of reported sexual

locations across the united states. the accuser said the franchise owners mishandled or ignored many of them. in one case described by buzz feed, a customer reported her massage therapist after he touched her inappropriately. but she says the franchise did not remove him. the man, james deer, later pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges against nine women and was jailed for at least five years. a lawyer who worked there on dozens of cases against massage envy tells nbc news the number of cases could be even higher since most women never report sexual misconduct. nbc news has not confirmed all of the allegations. massage envy said in a statement, each of these incidents are heart breaking. we are constantly listening, learning and looking at how we can do more, including how we support franchise locations with best practices in handling these incidents. >> hundreds of people evacuated ehud son valley mall in orange county sunday amid reports of a shooting during the first weekend of the holiday season. police believe a man might have accidentally discharged his gun, causing a panic. a woman and her son were injured, but later

the hospital. also a texas mall was evacuated after an officer involved shooting. according to police, a theft suspect ran away from an off duty police officer. the suspect then pulled out a fake gun and the officer fired multiple times, striking the suspect. that suspect was taken to a hospital and his condition so far is unknown. and there was another officer-involved shooting inside a costco near kansas city. an off duty officer shot and killed an armed man who walked in flashing his weapon at shoppers. no one else was hurt. >> the numbers are coming in on this all-important shopping weekend and the big winner is, no surprise, online retailers. but how do you know if you're a big winner? are you getting the best deal you can? here's nbc news business correspondent jo ling kent. >> reporter: the door buster deals ushered in a record breaking holiday shopping weekend. but instead of in stores, much of the spending surged online. as retailers made a record $5 billion online by the end

that's up 17% from last year. more than half of online shopping happened on mobile devices. this, as in-store foot traffic on black friday slowed down by about 1%. but some struggling department stores are still calling black friday a victory. the see yoef ceo of kohl's anno record breaking weekend with sales and traffic very strong, both online and in-store well ahead of last year. macy's said the cold weather is helping sell more coats and boots. >> the traffic in our stores is actually slightly better than last year. >> reporter: to capture more customers in person, certain chains like best buy, k-mart and macy's are guaranteeing price adjustments in customers can find a better deal elsewhere. but the very best discount especially on electronics and clothing are expected on cyber monday. adobe forecasts americans will spend a record $6.6 billion online in a single day, which would make it the biggest online shop d

passengers aboard a united airlines flight landing at newark liberty international airport sunday. initially authorities feared flight 961 from frankfurt, germany, had a problem with the brakes. officials later realized the problem was actually several blown tires. despite those tires being out, the boeing 777 did land safely and there were no reports of injuries. passengers remained on the tarmac for an hour before being transported to the terminal. >> a florida man is under arrest today charged with attempted murder in what police say is a case of road rage. authorities say the man opened fire on a major highway injuring two people. nbc's kerry sanders tells us what happened. >> reporter: a terrifying attack on the florida turnpike near orlando. >> shooter was in a gray toyota. >> reporter: a shooter firing 12 shots at this red car in broad daylight in what police are investigating as an act of road rage. >> additional caller now advising -- >> reporter: rushed to the hospital a 37-year-old man and

they are recovering with just minor injuries. troopers arrested 33-year-old kwanzaa donald charging him with two counts of attempted murder, a hand gun found in his car. this is just the latest case of a growing problem. nearly 80% of drivers in the u.s. have admitted to experiencing significant anger behind the wheel. incidents involving a firearm had more than doubled from 2014 to 2016. this summer 18-year-old bianca robertson shot in the head just days after graduating high school. she had merged from two lanes to one when the shot was fired. >> this person that took her took so much out of this world. >> reporter: a 3-year-old boy shot and killed in arkansas. >> acen has been shot, oh, my god! >> reporter: the other driver apparently became enraged. the boy's grandmother wasn't moving fast enough at a stop sign, and a truck driver narrowly escaped with h
