friends stay out of harm's way. first, that sexual misconduct claim that is sending shock waves around the country. matt lauer fired after more than 20 years at nbc news. >> well, since the news broke this morning, we, like you, have been asking so many questions about what exactly happened. we have new information from the accuser's attorney as the head of nbc news warns this complaint may not have been an isolated incident. >> and what does this latest revelations say about the conversation over sexual misconduct? nbc's chris pallone starts us off. >> reporter: visibly shaken, savannah guthrie announces the news she learned just moments before, that matt lauer, her co-host, had been fired. she read a statement that had been sent to nbc employees just before

inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by matt lauer". >> reporter: the behavior began in 2014 and continued for some time after. after serious review and the fact that the standards were clearly violated, they terminated lc terminated lauer's contract. >> i'm heartbroken for matt. he's my dear partner and i'm heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story and any other women who have their own stories to tell. >> reporter: lauer had been one of nbc's most recognizable faces for a quarter century. he became host of "today" in 1997. news of his firing spread quickly. >> nbc news has fired long-time host matt lauer. >> matt lauer h

>> we are grappling with a dilemma that so many people have faced these past few weeks. how do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly? >> reporter: the lawyer for the woman who made the complaint against lauer says he's encouraged by nbc's response and he's in awe of the courage his client showed for being the first to raise a complaint. so far, lauer has not responded to a request for comment. chris pallone, nbc news. >> matt lauer is just the latest name in a long list of men who are accused of sexual misconduct. it all started with hollywood producer harvey weinstein. since then, kevin spacey, mark halperin, senate candidate roy moore, al franken, journalist charlie rose and congressman john conyers. and that is,is, by no means, a complete

however, an attorney believes the sexual harassment claims against president trump and the "access hollywood" tape really started this movement. >> so we had a condition where people were finally starting to speak up in a very clear and decisive voice and in a unified voice that we're not going to put up with this anymore. and then fast forward to the allegations in the roger ailes case, the o'reilly case more recently and then, of course, the harvey weinstein allegation just opened the flood gates. >> we will have continuing coverage of the sexual misconduct allegations against matt lauer and the decision to terminate him all afternoon. on the nbc washington app, you can see the full announcement on the "today" show this morning as well as the full statement by the chairman. >> minnesota public radio fired garrison

inappropriate behavior. he admitted to putting his hand on a woman's bare back in an attempt to console her and his hand went up about six inches. he says he apologized and that the woman accepted his apology. that is, until he says, her lawyer called him. the topic of sexual misconduct is front and center on capitol hill. the house approved a measure designed to tackle harassment in congress. it will require lawmakers and staff to take mandatory anti-harassment training every year. that move follows a wave of allegations against lawmakers. a similar resolution for mandatory training passed in the senate earlier this month. we're going to have a live report from capitol hill in the next half hour. stay tuned for that. a graduation scandal that has rocked d.c. public schools. >> it surrounds a school celebrated laste

graduating all of its seniors and sending them to college but a new investigation found that many of the students missed months of school and it also found teachers were pressured to pass students even if they failed a course. and students who knew had to work the system. >> here's a look at what happens next. mark? >> reporter: that's ligright. earlier today a press conference was held. revelations are that many of the students who were hailed for graduating here last year may not have actually passed all of their classes. >> i certainly am very concerned about what i read about allegations from teachers and we take those allegations very seriously and we will thoroughly review all policies related to

attendance, graduation and credit recovery. >> reporter: the allegations were first reported by wmau radio, that the faculty of ballou high school -- >> it's important that the students earn the diploma that is received and when we hear of instances where that is a concern or an issue, we take that extremely seriously. >> reporter: in 2016, ballou high school graduated 57% of its seniors but last year the number jumped to 100%. 164 seniors received dip employdiplomas but half of those students missed more than three months of classes. the report indicated that the lowest grades that teachers were allowed to give a student was 50% and some students couldn't even read or write at a

level. >> i don't think that should happen. >> reporter: now, mayor bowser has asked for a citywide review to be completed within 45 days. meanwhile, here at ballou, the principal remains in charge. no one has been disciplined. no one has been removed from any positions. pat, erika, back to you guys. for the first time, we're hearing from the friends of a young man who died after being shot by u.s. park police. his family says the 25-year-old died on monday after clinging to life for ten days. his death now sparks new questions. david culver is along the g.w. parkway in alexandria which is close to where this case started. what are the friends saying today? >> reporter: i can tell you, pat, i spoke with two of the

throughout our phone call, a friend was in hysterics. this man went to high school with bijan and when he heard about the november 17th incident, he couldn't picture the bijan he knew of being part of it. police say he was part of a hit-and-run and then cthey chasd him and it ended with gunshots. his family says that bijan did not have a gun and got hit three times in the head. >> it's hard hearing when someone that you're close with in the past just goes like that. and especially under these circumstances because it shouldn't have happened like

that where we are is along slater lane which is where the hit-and-run may have started and continued several miles into fairfax county. fairfax county police also responded to the incident and the chief putting out an incident saying that their officers did not open fire and they have turned over the dash cam video that was in their police cruisers to the fbi. that's because the fbi, that's the agency now investigating this shooting. pat? >> david culver, thank you. the white house is defending president trump's retweeting of violent videos amidst outrage from civil rights groups as they claim to show violence by muslims. they were tweeted by a leader of the british far right. the white house says the president wants to promote strong borders and strong national security but local muslims are concerned about how the president is portraying their religion to a worldwide

from doorsteps every single year. these thieves follow delivery drivers around and then they grab your goods as soon as the driver is out of sight. so here are four things you can do right now to protect your packages. sign up for alerts. i do this all the time because some carriers offer a text or e-mail alert so that you'll know when a delivery is going to be made. require a signature for delivery, especially when you have a big ticket item being delivered. send the packages to your work address. i also do this. if you are sending a package to your friend or family members, ask them for their work address. if a package is stolen, contact the shipping company. sometimes they require the sender, not the recipient to initiate the claim but you have a limited number of days to do this. order from a retailer that has a very good policy when it comes to lost or stolen packages. oftentimes they will reship the item for you for free and

bill to make sexual harassment training mandatory but no change in the way the allegations are handled, a process critics say is designed to silence accusers. >> today's bill is an important step in the right direction but let's not fool ourselves. it is a baby step. >> reporter: this, as the longest current serving member of congress, john conyers, faces increasing pressure to step down after another accuser came forward alleging sexual misconduct. >> he came up this way and his right hand went up my dress and my thighs and i'm there in front of an audience. this is an audience. an audience. >> reporter: conyers spotted overnight flying home to detroit has denied all wrongdoing. the congressional black caucus, the group conyers co-founded, comparing his situation to senator al franken who has apologized but continues to serve. >> we are not

resign while the ethics investigation is going on. we think that is a decision for he and his family and his constituents to make. >> reporter: in an open letter to congress, hundreds of former hill staffers demanding a better process for reporting harassment. today, one of those staffers was set to reveal the name of a congressman she says harassed her but decided against it leaving her spokesman to explain. now, as the process stands right now, when a sexual harassment claim is settled, the accuser must remain anonymous and some advocates say it's time for that to change. pat, erika? >> blayne alexander, thank you. from the president to regular folks on the street, everyone has an opinion about the firing of the "today" show's matt lauer. >> nbc fired him after alleged inappropriate behavior involving a

troy johnson is here with today's "talk around town". >> radio legend garrison keillor says he was fired for inappropriate sexual behavior but matt lauer is the most famous figure in america who has been brought down so far by these allegations in recent months. what are your listeners saying about this? >> they are shocked, the people i've spoke to, especially with how we heard about this story, watching the opening segment of the "today" show and explain why this man who has been there for 20 years is no longer there. follow that with the explosion of comments on social media just certainly had people wondering, wow, what's going on. but they are not shocked about the fact that another man is being exposed for bad behavior. women that i talked to very directly told me that they have experienced harassment in some form. it's something they've had to deal with, many women in their

sad commentary on where we are in society today. i spoke to beck. she lives in takoma park. she said she's upset about matt and charlie rose but she's happy that the allegations are finally being taken seriously. >> i'm happy to see the swiftness with what corporate america is moving and i'm hopeful that maybe smaller businesses and the rest of us will take a queue that this sort of behavior and this way of being isn't acceptable. >> beth also tells me she's encouraged that some of these powerful men facing allegations have apologized and stepped aside and she would like to see more of that responsibility from other people going forward. >> so your listeners are also weighing in on another high-profile topic, the u.s. supreme court's decision about the mississippi flag that's been around since 1800s? >> yes. a lot of folks haven't been alerted to

seen some of the confederate statues coming down but in mississippi they have been dealing with this since 1894. it's the last flag in the union that has the confederate battle flag incorporated in it and it's flown over the state since 1894. listeners are saying that they are tired about hearing about the pushback that this represents history. they were telling me the history it represents is the opposition of those that were enslaved as the confederate flag flew. in fact, mississippi left the union because of the hostility that america had when it comes to slavery. they are saying if you're going to tell the history, you have to tell the complete history and why people are still so upset. >> let's shift gears. meghan markle's engagement to prince harry is also the talk of the town and the globe. what are your folks saying about that? >> there are a lot of folks excited about another royal wedding and will it be the wedding of the century. they know it will be a beautiful wedding but there are certainly some serious things going

four things to know this afternoon. explosive allegations involving the firing of matt lauer. variety has spoken to three women who identify themselves as victims of sex harassment. among the accusations, lauer was known for making lewd comments, for sending texts to co-workers and for inappropriate behavior in the office. and less than an hour ago, the house approved a bipartisan measure requiring lawmakers and staff to take anti-harassment training once a year. congress continues to react to an outbreak of sexual misconduct allegations on capitol hill. d.c. mayor bowser is launching an investigation i

school. i want to show you a live look at rockefeller where the tree will be lit for the holiday. you can watch that live right here on nbc 4 at 8:00 tonight. if you plan to fly over the holidays, one major airline is facing a massive shortage of pilots. thousands of flights may be in jeopardy because of a scheduling glitch. >> the nation's largest airline, american airlines, does not have enough pilots to fly its planes over the holidays. susan hogan has more about what happened and what the airline is doing in an effort to fill those scheduling holes and a lot of people are hearing this saying, i've got tickets and they are freaking out. >> you're so right, erika. you don't hear this problem every day. thousands of flights around the holidays are currently without pilots. so how did this happen? a system scheduling glitch allows

final preparations are being made. how is it looking down there? >> it's looking pretty good. a lot of scuttling and moving around and this time tomorrow, the festivities will be under way. of course, the main event is the national christmas tree, 75,000 lights, standing 30-feet high. if you plan to visit this holiday season in person, there are 56 other trees around, each for every u.s. state and territory. >> there are 56 smaller trees that surround the national christmas tree and they help us bring in the rest of the country for the holiday. maryland's artists designed ornaments features animals in the chesapeake bay and a couple girl scout troops and virginia tidewater out rio de janeiro ren those ornaments. >> throughout the years,
