six miles north of dover, folks along part of the seaboard. one man was watching the tree lighting on tv and he got a surprise. >> all of a sudden i felt the couch kind of shake for about two seconds. >> the u.s. geological survey says it has reports from people who felt shaking as far away as north carolina and connecticut. >> exactly how much stronger was the 2011 earthquake than the one we felt yesterday? that one near charlottesville was 5.8 in magnitude. yesterday's quake in delaware was about 4.1. that means the 2011 quake was 50 times larger and 350 times stronger than today's. more than yesterday's in terms of the energy it released. the epicenters of the two earthquakes were roughly 150 miles apart.

an earthquake does to the ground. we're following a developing story out of bowie this morning. the pilot who crashed his plane trying to land near freeway airport is going to be okay. take a look at the video from chopper 4 over the scene last night as investigators examined the plane. you can see it was pretty dark out there. the 72-year-old pilot said he clipped the tree line as he was trying to land because there were no lights at the airport. it is now 4:32. new developments in matt lauer's firing from the "today" show. six women have now come forward accusing him of sexual misconduct. he was abruptly fired from nbc news earlier this week following a complaint from a colleague. nbc news confirms the alleged behavior began at the 2014 olympics in russia and continued after that. other women accused the former morning show host of sexual harassment and assault. lauer released a statement saying, in part, he is embarrassed and ashamed. now to capitol hill where he

opened a sexual misconduct inquiry into al franken. multiple women have come forward claiming the minnesota democrats groped them. franken has apologized but not acknowledged the specific allegations. franken supports the ethics investigation. congressman john conyers is still in a detroit hospital for a stress-related illness. he was admitted after the entire house democratic leadership team called for him to resign. conyers is accused of mistreating women in his office. allegations against him range from verbal abuse to sexual advances. meanwhile, gop senators are reworking their tax plan to vote on it this morning. senators delayed voting on that bill last night when they couldn't agree on the so-called fiscal trigger. that trigger would automatically hike taxes if the tax plan doesn't cover its own cost. edward lawrence will explain why senators are having a hard time agreeing on this bill.

a bizarre crash in charles county had a woman clinging to the hood of a car. maryland state police say a woman's car was sideswiped on wednesday night along 301 in waldorf when the woman left to take pictures of the damage, police say the other driver tried to run her over. see jumped on the hood of his car to avoid getting hit. he just kept driving. 27-year-old andrew -- is now facing multiple charges. the woman is okay. wow. >> weird. >> very odd. a local doctor is being charged with 66 counts of writing unauthorized prescriptions. >> dr. william s. vaughn iii faces life in prison. fbi agents arrested vaughn and found he prescribed thousands of adderall pills for nonmedical purposes. four of his

we have breaking news in gaithersburg. an accident causing traffic problems this morning. megan mcgrath live near frederick avenue and chestnut street. megan? >> reporter: yeah. big problems this morning. you can see the cause behind me here. an suv has taken out a utility pole right here on north frederick avenue. all of the power lines are down. it's affecting both sides of the street. north frederick avenue closed in both directions in the area of chestnut street. crews are on the scene. you can see the pepco folks taking a look there. they haven't begun the work of making the repairs. this is going to be something that

time to prepare given the long list of charges. this morning, detectives are still looking for answers about human remains found in the woods. the remains of 19-year-old harry ryan detwiler were discovered in a shallow grave off georgia avenue in brookville. detwiler's family reported him missing. they're awaiting results of the autopsy. a deadly attack in the middle east. >> chris lawrence is following developments from the live desk. chris, what's going on? >> eun, aaron, the breaking news is out of pakistan where taliban militants stormed a college campus. nine people have been killed, 35 others hurt in peshawar province. the gunmen disguised themselves by wearing burqas worn by many women. they made their way on the campus, shot a guard and started shooting at some of the students. about two hours into the attack, army troops were finally able to kill two of the attackers. we're still working to learn exactly how many militants were involved in in attack

>> chris, thank you. today we're expecting to get a report from charlottesville on the response to the white nationalist rally back in august. you may remember this video, a group helped a rally that led to violent clashes between protesters and counter protesters and turned deadly. charlottesville police were criticized for their response. the police chief said they had a plan in place for the demonstration, but due to the violence, officers had to alter those plans. you might remember this couple that was caught on camera claiming they owned a mansion. it looks like they are in more trouble with the police. antonio caldwell and mia waddell never showed up to court yesterday. police say they went looking for them and found them trespassing in another home. this time on lanier place in adams morgan. they're moorish nationalists and have sovereign rights to the property they said. the homeowner from the first
