crash in montgomery county. it's a busy morning on "news4 today." especially as we start the day with that terrible accident. we want to get to the newest details on the crash. >> take a live look from chopper 4. now a bird's eye view of the scene this morning. >> we have live team coverage in your first 4 traffic. megan mcgrath is on the scene in gaithersburg. but first, melissa mollet has a look at the impact. melissa, what are you seeing? >> this is a major mess for a lot of people that head through the gaithersburg area any time in the morning. it's supposed to last until 8:30. north frederick avenue at chestnut street, we're shut down both directions. you saw megan mcgrath at the scene. we'll talk to her in a second. this is north of gaithersburg high school in front of the ihop there. with the downed wires and the lanes blocked, this is a major mess for a lot of people. you can see the section closed. consider 270. i know t's

say as an alternate. but it's true. left lane getting by the crash and 270 southbound. left side blocked as well. no major issues on the beltway. >> good morning, sheena. >> good morning, melissa. the good news aside from the weatherwise, we're not looking at any issues out there. we have chilly conditions though. when you factor in the wind, it's breezy. now the wind is pmaking it feel5 degrees colder. here's a look at the temperatures as you step outside. in frederick, your temperature at 34 degrees. 46 in clinton. everyone is feeling that breeze, but as you do head out for your finally friday commute, by 7:00 a.m., sun glare on the roads. very sunny today. temperatures through the afternoon. about the mid-50s. we'll take a look at the weekend forecast, see when the next big chance of rain is straight ah

thank you, sheena. >> a crash causing big traffic trouble in gaithersburg. you look at wires down. megan mcgrath is live on the scene this morning. tell us what you're seeing from your point of view. >> reporter: guess the pope ke crews are starting to work or clean this mess up. we have five large power trucks here. you can seep the folks in the bucket trucks. they're working on it. they have started the process but it's quite a job. we have the one utility pole that's snapped in half. we have the wires hanging down and we also have a second utility pole that's leaning. they're concerned about that as well. this is a bird's eye view from the chopper. you can see that the road is closed in both directions. we're talking about north frederick avenue. 355 as it runs through gaithersburg. closed in both directions. this is a big job. it's going to take them seval

he's accused of raping the man in the back of his car. at 6:30, justin finch will have more on why police believe there could be more victims. the pilot who crashed his plane trying to land near freeway airport in bowie is going to be okay. chopper 4 was over the scene as investigators examined that plane. it's pretty dark out there. the 72-year-old pilot said he clipped the tree line as he was trying to land because there were no lights at the airport. now to new video of the earthquake so many of you felt yesterday. >> chris lawrence at the live desk with more. >> it was centered in delaware. we're getting a look at new video from inside a home there. it gives you an idea of how the shaking impacted some people. it appears to be debris falling from the ceiling. all in all, wasn't much damage but millions of people felt the quake, including me. i was sitting at the kitchen table with my daughter. we felt the entireu

6:06 your time right now. we turn to new developments in matt lauer's firing from nbc news. six women accuse him of sexual misconduct. >> lauer was abruptly fired from the "today" show earlier this week following a complaint from a colleague. the alleged behavior started in sochi, russia and continued after that. lauer released a statement saying in part he is embarrassed and ashamed. meanwhile, embattled michigan congressman john conyers is in a detroit hospital for a stress-related illness. the entire house democratic leadership team is calling for him to resign. conyers is accused of mistreating women in his office. allegations range from verbal abuse to sexual advances. right now, we're one week away from a government shudown. we expect house republicans to introduce a bill to keep them open until the 2 itnd. president trump told two after dants that he thinks a

politically. you remember ha guy. i certainly do. that is running back alfred morris. very popular when he played for the 'skins. now he's getting it done in dallas. doesn't that hurt? the former 'skins player pulled out all the stops in the devastating loss on the road. i think he's playing a little harder against his old team. take a look at this. the redskins/dallas rivalry is alive and well on social media. we're following breaking news in gaithersburg right now. these are live pictures of chopper 4. an accident on north frederick avenue at chestnut street shut down all lanes. an suv went into a utility pole, caused power lines to come down. that's causing a lot of problems. megan mcgrath telling us that work crews are on the scene trying to repair this. it could be a big problem for the commute. melissa mollet is following this. stay with us on "news4 today." we have a verdict in a case that sparked a national debate on immigration policies. yesterday a san francisco jury acquitted a homeless mexican immigrant of a murder charge. jose zarate

in the murder of katherine steinle. >> they argued the shooting was not deliberate. president trump tweeted after the verdict asking what do you say to the woman's family because "we can't secure the border." zarate was deported five times prior to that shooting. he faces prison time for possessing an illegal weapon. take a look at this. illinois police officers are being hailed as heroes for running toward that burning car. a man was inside and refused to come out. the dashcam shows you how intensely it was burning. one of the officers physically dragged him out of the car. the car was involved in a hit-and-run crash. one officer was burned. two others had to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. but the thing is, they're all okay. chris, thank you. take a look at this video, kids out of control in the ol

here's who police say happened. we're talking about 36-year-old michael bell of upper marlboro now behind bars on charges, including impersonating an officer and rape. police say bell stopped a young man aefrl sunday morning in this 2007 crown victoria in langley park which resembles a police cruiser. also telling the victim that he was in a dangerous area and offering that victim a ride home. the victim says that bell had this security badge around his neck. look at this here. it does kind of look like a police badge. the victim says that bell also said he was an undercover officer and took his i.d. before sexually assaulting him in that car. with the i.d.s of at least two others found in bell's possession, the hope is others who are victimized will come forward. >> you know, we're in a time right now where people who were once afraid to speak up are speaking up. we want that to continue. we want our victims to come

forward. if we have anybody who has had contact with this individual and something happened to them, we need to know about it. we need to hold him accountable for it. >> police did describe this as a violent attack. this man is on social media. has lots of prince george's county police imagery and people want to talk to the victim as well as people who know michael bell. you're asked to come forward and speak to police. justin finch. in our other top stories. our hallidoliday plans may have saved. american airlines has found pilots. >> to fly 1600 flights that were fully booked. the airline says that number is down to a few hundred. this is a look at one of the few good moments during the 'skins game. the cowboys had more
