rate from 35% to 20%. president trump wants to seal the deal in the senate. a new report says he pressed senators on something else this summer. their investigation into russia's election interference. debate on immigration. and now, igniting a brand-new one. gau gadi schwartz has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. outside of the courtroom, this case was overshadowed by the politics of illegal immigration and sanctuary cities. inside the courtroom, immigration barely came up. the defense focusing on evidence that showed they say this was an accident. but this morning, kate steinle's father saying that justice was not served. the fate of jose garcia zarate was read in front of a packed courtroom. >> the verdict that came in today was not the one we were hoping for. but i think it's unequivocal, both sides gave it their all. >> this jury's verdict should be respected. they heard the evidence. they deliberated as a group. they heard readback testimony. >> reporter: in theme

2015, 23-year-old kate steinle was shot in the back, while on a walk with her father, while on a san francisco pier known as embarcade embarcadero. the suspect was zarate. three months before the deadly shooting, he had been released from jail after a drug charge was dropped. but immigration officials were never notified. then-candidate donald trump seized on the case that the u.s. needed his proposed border wall. >> kate, this magnificent young woman, shot in the back by a guy who was sent over here. probably pushed over. who knows. >> reporter: overnight, president trump weighing in, a disgraceful verdict in the kate steinle case. during the trial, the immigration debate took a backseat on a case on whether

accidental. the bullet ricochetted before hitting her, and he never aimed the weapon at steinle, insisting it went off accidentally. something the family dismissed. >> i this i they did shoot toward them, which was very upsetting to me. i was hoping it was just a ricochet. and wasn't aimed. >> reporter: now, anger and politics once again surrounding the family's heartbreaking loss. >> somehow or another, we got caught up in immigration and trump. this was the death of my daughter. nothing's changed except kate's not here. >> reporter: and back here at pier 14, there's candles and there is a picture of kate steinle. these were left here by a group of self-identified white nationalists last night. they came and left messages, including bill a wall. and the

socially, someone said we worked in finance and didn't understand what everyone was talking about because she doesn't work with women. think about what that statement means. that means that women you don't realize and probably why are women not surrounded? because they probably didn't get that job. why were they not in computer science classes? why weren't they into that pipeline as you referenced. this is the millennial generation. we watched "mad men." it seems like an era that's so far away. we can say, look at that misogynistic behavior. that can never happen. and there is that line, which is sexual assault, which is criminal in many cases. and then, there is what happens when it's just sexist behavior in the workplace. >> i turn to you. you are a man who worked in this area. you do good work. and men need to be a part of this conversation. what is your message to them? >> first of all, i want to say that, we really, our heart goes out to the victims

about the women who had the courage to come forward, i think about all of the women in the margins of the margins, who, the domestic workers, the undocumented worker. the woman who is working in a low-paying job. and all they're being abused and disrespect is happening there. men have to, as women are finding their voice, men have to find their voice, too. it's not up to us. it's not going to end unless men become part of the solution. we address this from intervention. something has to happen and we have to react to it. we want to go to prevention where it never happens in the first place. that bridge is mental. we have to be different as men. while most are not abusive, and don't discriminate, we are silent about the abuse and discrimination. that's as much a problem as the violence is. we are passing this down to our boys. we did a survey, with our curricul curricum

81% of boys do not know what consent is. that explains sexual assault in the military. sexual assault on college campuses. our boys are being taught that no means try harder. >> let's talk about punishment. what should the punishment be. do they never work again. what -- tell us what you think that bar is. tina? >> clearly, because we're in the throes of a revelation, a revolution is bloody in the beginning. we're going to see severe punishments, what we're seeing with huge careers going. i think it's going to change quickly. as companies realize, that to harbor and nurture and cover up a sexual predator, who is a big-ticket item in their company, an important manager or further down the line, just an effective worker. they're going to realize it's too much of a liability to tall
