every single american if it becomes law. that's something that's looking a lot more likely this morning. >> reporter: days of deal making and fiery debate ending overnight with a celebration by victorious republicans. >> the tax cuts and jobs act as amended is passed. >> reporter: in the lead-up to the vote, democrats complained they were given just hours to read the 400-plus page bill, packed with late editions, sometimes scribbled in the margins. >> this is the tax bill. see how thick it is? take a look at this, folks. this is your government at work. >> reporter: on the floor, a furious debate. >> this legislation will go down in history as one of the worst, most unfair pieces of legislation ever passed. >> this bill is about helping americans for the long term. it's about restoring the american dream. >> reporter: the result, 51-49 republican victory,

the plea deal sending shock waves through washington. still no comment by president trump about this. we go to the white house with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. president trump is this morning set to head back to his hometown of new york city to attend a handful of fundraising events. still maintaining his public silence about that bombshell plea deal involving his former national security adviser michael flynn. retired general michael flynn, once president trump's national security adviser and key confidant, now a convicted felon. flynn, who called for hillary clinton to be thrown behind bars over her e-mails, pleaded guilty friday to willfully and knowingly making false, fictitious and fraudulent statements to the fbi about his contacts with russia's former ambassador to the u.s., sergey kislyak, contacts he previously denied. court documents describe

senior member of the trump transition team directed flynn to contact the russian government and others about a u.n. resolution on israeli settlement. sources familiar with the matter tell nbc news that very senior member was jared kushner, president trump's son-in-law and senior adviser. a second comment came a week later. a senior official asked flynn to reach out to kislyak again about the obama administration's sanctions meant to punish moscow over its election meddling. nbc news learned that senior official was mcfarland, who would later be sworn in as deputy national security adviser. flynn's plea deal is a game changer, marking the first time that special counsel mueller's investigation penetrated president trump's inner circle. >> general flynn, how great is he? >> reporter: the president praising flynn days after firing him. >> general flynn is a wonderful man. ith

very unfairly by the media. >> reporter: flynn, the fourth trump campaign official implicated in criminal activity. in a statement, flynn says he accepts full responsibility for his actions. adding, quote, my guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the special counsel's office reflect a decision i made in the best interests of my family and of our country. white house special counsel ty cobb trying to minimize the impack. saying in a statement, nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than mr. flynn. with flynn now cooperating with prosecutors, white house officials must be left wondering just what flynn will tell the special counsel. still no word from president trump on all of this. one republican source close to the white house says the administration was blindsided by the news of flynn's plea deal, craig. >> beyond being blindsided, what is the mood behind you right now? what is the mood at the white house? >> publicly, you saw the statement from ty cobb, tg

to create distance between the president and mike flynn. another source close to the president tells us this development is very, very bad for the white house, craig. >> jeff at 1600 pennsylvania. thank you. ari melber, an nbc news legal analyst and host of "the . good morning. >> kushner directed flynn to make contact with the russians, the u.n. resolution regarding se settlements. a week later, flynn contacts them again to talk about isis. why would general flynn lie about the conversations? >> that's what bob mueller is zeroing in on here. the lie is what he pled guilty to. there is no dispute anymore. there's no two sides to that story. that's mike flynn agreeing with bob mueller that he lied about this, and that was wrong. to your question of why, the implication was there was something worse going on. the other part of this story that bob mueller is telling is mike flynn

single person. the implication of the report we just saw here on the "today" show this morning is mcfarland, jared kushner, these people were speaking. who were they speaking for, to s potentially the president. >> should we assume this case is far from closed for the mueller team? >> far from closed. true and highly misleading, the statement from mr. cobb there. the reason is, when you make a cooperating agreement like this, you are explicitly saying to the feds, i have information i will give you on other people. those are in the documents we at nbc news now obtained. no, there isn't a new name yet in public. yes, there is an agreement to give information about other names. in fact, bob mueller privately probably already has those. >> ari, we know the president told the fbi director to drop

this. to leave michael flynn alone. also word a couple days ago in the "new york times" that the president was apparently trying to twist the arms of republicans on the senate committee who are investigating russia's connection to the election. now this. if it is revealed that it was the president of the united states that did have knowledge of michael flynn contacting russians, does that not then seem obvious to you, as obstruction? >> this is how i'll put it, and i'll put it carefully. there are enough issues swirling around here that are being exposed, where even someone inclined to give this president the benefit of the doubt has to start to wonder, why was there such an obsession over immediately appeasing russia as the first, urgent priority of the transition? when people started looking into that, why was the president's first impulse not to sort of address it, talk about it or get to the facts, but blow up the

loyaltitloyalty and fire the fbi director under investigation? if there was no smoke or fire there, why did you have people, including the president of the united states, running around saying, god, it is so hot in here? >> what's next? what should we expect? >> what's next is bob mueller is going to be working with the former national security adviser, three-star general, this man who trump voters heard over and over is a great guy from the president, to get all of this information. we'll methodically check it all. the only good news here is if the president really wasn't involved in anything, if this was all at a high level but not the highest, bob mueller will find that, too. his job as a former republican director of the fbi hyimself, nt to get anyone in trouble but get the facts. if it stops here and not there, he'll find it. could be good news. he'll say, it went here and here and we're done. he's

that has been put out in the press about what type of case this is. we are saying that what happened was not a crime. >> reporter: santa clara county judge grew criticism for his leniency, sentencing turner to six months in county jail. the max term for the crime, 14 years in state prison. the 21-year-old was expelled from school, banned from swimming and forced to register as a life-long sex offender. returning last year to his home in ohio. santa clara district attorney jeff rosin responded to nbc's request for comment, saying, quote, turner received a fair trial and was justly convicted. it'll be upheld. nothing can roll back emily doe's legacy of raising the world's awareness about sexual assault. some experts claim his attorneys are exposing turner to a harsher sentence. at a time of heightened sensitivity surrounding sexual conduct. >> it is dangerous for brock turner.

sexual abuser or offender at this time. >> reporter: looking for another day in court could mean more outrage in the courts of public opinion. steve patterson rk, nbc news, l angeles. also this morning, the justice department issued an arrest warrant for the illegal immigrant found not guilty in the shooting death of a san fernando woman. a national conversation on immigration and why the illegal immigrant wasn't deported earlier. the justice department is considering federal charges. update on the firing of matt lauer. top executives learned two other news outlets were working on articles about sexual misconduct involving the former co-host several weeks before an accuser came forward. the executives at the network said they didn't find evidence of complaints against lauer or settlements that might have been reached. and when asked directly about any misconduct, lauer said he, quote, could not think of anything at all. on friday, one executive told

cause, and there would be no settlement. the network has also launched an internal review into the events surrounding his firing, as well as new measures to prevent sexual harassment. some good news if you're flying with american airlines over the christmas holidays. overnight, the airline reached an agreement with its pilots union to avoid having to cancel thousands of flights from december 17th through the end of the year. a computer scheduling glitch left thousands of flights without a captain, co-pilot or both. details of the deal haven't been released. former number one champion golfer tiger woods back in action today at the hero world challenge. his first pga tour event since his fourth back surgery. also his first since the high-profile arrest for driving under the influence of prescription medications. at one point on friday, woods was in the lead. he starts the day five strokes back. you can watch tiger complete in round three of the hero world challenge at 2:30 eastern here on
