you're taking a look at the deadly thomas fire in southern california. fire officials say it has grown to 25,000 acres in just a matter of hours. that brushfire started late last night. officials ordered mandatory evacuations. we'll have more on that breaking news in a minute. chris lawrence gathering new details as he heads to the live desk. >> first, we want to get to the all important forecast. you want to pay attention to this one. this is going to be the last mild day for a while. then rain and then a big change. >> meteorologist chuck bell is here with the timing on all this. hey, chuck. >> good morning everybody. off to a quiet start. nothing to worry about this morning. skies are partly cloudy over downtown washington. temperatures are mild. we are in the mid to upper 40s around the city right now. our average high temperature is 50 degrees. we're already just about there.

morning. a little chilly with the 40s. 60 today. take the umbrella with you. rain chances go up, up and away after 2:00 this afternoon. the forecast for today. the daily grade. 63 for a high. but increasing clouds. rain likely to settle in before evening. rain chance today stands at 80%. this will be only real day we have to worry about rain this week. but oh, those temperatures will be a tumbling starting tomorrow and a frigid weekend ahead. the extended forecast in a few minutes. for now, let's go to traffic. good morning, melissa. >> good morning, chuck. we've got a couple of problems here now. northbound route one after 95 in lort lorton. on the phone to figure out what's going on. it is a crash that has shut down the lanes. at least temporarily. we'll let you know how that's going to kind of extend into the next couple of minutes here. northbound 95 at dale city. all lanes now open there. eastbound 66 before the beltway. you can see this crash. it's on the right side of the roadway. we are seeing delays

also on 66 inbound after 123, multiple vehicles with flat tires. more on this on route 1 in lorton coming up. i'm chris lawrence at the live desk. some potentially really bad news for perhaps hundreds of families who were sending or expecting to receive packages through ups. take a look. we're getting our first look at some of the damage from a devastating fire at the ups building in frederick. this fire broke out overnight at the loading dock. this was sort of a temporary structure that ups had set up to handle the extra workload during the holidays. fire officials say when they got to the scene, ten trucks were engulfed as well as that structure. now, inside the structure, the sprinkler system was able to activate and that limited the damage inside. obviously the no sprinkler

some heavy damage there. packages have been destroyed. not sure how many yet. they have to get in there and figure it out. we're in the height of christmas rush. so this could be pretty bad news for a lot of folks. we'll keep on top of that. justin finch is on the way to that scene. as soon as he gets there, we'll be bringing you live pictures as well as up to date information on that. >> chris, thanks so much. it's 6:03. three arlington county elementary school teachers are accused of smoking marijuana on school property. someone told police it happened on a regular basis at taylor elementary school. p.e. teachers luke lloyd and michael diaddigo were arrested and charged with possession. they've been suspended. diaddigo is also accused of selling marijuana to other teachers on school property. a third teacher is on administrative leave. the school's principal told parents the investigation is focusing on the adults only, not their interactions with children. developing this morning, students at one

principal. willie jackson is replacing there reeves as the principal at ballou high school. an investigation revealed dozens of students graduated last june when they shouldn't have. only 57 out of the 164 students who received diplomas were on track to graduate. d.c. public schools chancellor released a statement saying in part, "we take this issue very seriously. ? investigation will restore integrity to the process by providing students, parents and the broader community with answers." this morning, prince george's county police officers will be on hand. there was a threat against several schools. officials say there was only one threat posted yesterday. police have not identified the person who posted it. but said that he or she could face criminal charges. today the first step could be taken

cameras to the roads you drive and some of your neighbors actually want more of them. >> they're hoping that it will cut down on the number of crashes on indian head highway. >> people are fed up with the reputation indian head has has a highway of death in our area. that's why many are pushing for speed cameras and even though they're unpopular. they may be able to provide some kind of solution. there is a public hearing set for this evening on this matter. we've seen one statement about this. he really is pushing for the cameras saying that police have written some 5300 citations since september when a crackdown on safety out here began. also argues too, that police can't be out here 24/7 but the cameras perhaps could be. indian head

some six fatalities a year here. more than a thousand crashes. obviously a dire need for some kind of solution. the reason in part for that is the state finds there's so many long stretches out here. can easily go the speed and oftentimes makes really wrong decisions. they're hoping speed cameras stop people from doing so. back to you in the studio. >> justin, 6:06. thank you. now to the breaking news out of southern california. >> the fast moving developments on the fast moving fire. chris, the flames are incredible to watch. >> right now, eun, fire officials say it's out of control. they say multiple buildings are burning and fire is just burning so hot, so fast, crews are having a really tough time trying to get to -- get access to the flames to try to knock it down. take a look. this is the thomas fire. nearly 200,000 people

power. officials are going door to door knocking on people's doors, driving through neighborhoods, ordering mandatory evacuations including the students at the college. at least one person was killed in a rollover accident as they were practically trying to drive out of their neighborhood trying to get away from the flames. officials say the fire has grown to more than 25,000 acres. started last night. it was started by the incredible wind. all the fire burning about an hour north of l.a. they are very concerned that the wind can push -- a much, much higher population. eun, back to you. we'll continue to follow the developments right here on news 4. chris, thank you. besides math making a big comeback in the classroom as we know. >> computer science education week. one prince george's high school

molette green is at flowers high school with robots. molette, what do you have? >> reporter: surrounded by robots and excited kids. this is main street. this is part of the school that's focuses on the future and these future scientists are testing out their robots. making them move. powering them up. this big guy here is hermie. later in the hour, herm eaes is going to climb this ladder. our senior here named schuyler is making her move, making the robot move with an app in her phone. she programmed it last year. we're going to talk in a few minutes to the students and the principal about why they're so extra passionate about science and technology this week. that's coming up on "news4 today." we're live in the community and prince george's county. >>

day -- in charlottesville that ended with a death. he's not saying if he plans to run for president in 2020. embattled senate candidate roy moore is picking up key endorsements one week before election day. president trump tweeted that the senate needs the republicans to represent alabama. the republican national committee for alabama to support moore. several women accused moore of sexually assaulting them when they were teenagers. former white house chief strategist steve bannon is campaigning for more today. alabama voters head to the polls for the special election next tuesday. >> new overnight billy bush is sticking to his guns on the "access hollywood" clip that cost him his job. president trump heard bragging about inappropriately grabbing women. bush wrote an op-ed after learning that president trump questions whether it's really his voice on the tape. bush insisted

he's controlling hermes. next to me is a table of robots that competed and placed one award for automation. for manual and this is the whole goal of the schools is to prepare these young minds for future jobs. i've got the principal here of flowers high school gorman brown to talk about why it's so important to you and your students. >> it's so important that our young people are engaged in learning opportunities to ensure that they're viable members of the s.t.e.m. community moving forward. i think the cyber security through robotics, through our other programs, we're ensuring that our kids will be viable members of the 21st century community. >> one of the students is samuel kirkland. you're controlling the car and what else here? >> we're controlling the cars and the different micro robots. we have db 8s. we have magpies.

traffic. >> what's going on, melissa. >> big problems in lorton. northbound after 95, woodbridge lane is blocked because of this multicar crash. we spoke with police. it's a four to six-car crash. that to me says it could be a while. if this is anything severe at all, they have to get the cars out of way. we'll keep you updated on that one. colesville, blocked by the crash still this morning. that's on the right side of the roadway. eastbound 66 before the beltway, also on the right side of the roadway, slow inbound as you approach the beltway. southbound 295 at nanny helen boroughs. inbound new york avenue near montana avenue, one right lane blocked by a crash. inbound parkway, crash in the right lane. a reminder at the bottom of the beltway, inner loop local lanes on the woodrow wilson bridge, the left lane is blocked for a disabled vehicle.

gutted by this fire. lots of wet cardboard and boxes and packages inside. we know that close to -- there was a call to fire out here at the this ups warehouse. some ten vehicles reports damaged and you can see looking at this kind of damage, the jeopardy these packages could be in. they're very busy with the holidays upon us. i got a chance to talk brief live with the person working inside. he does say they're trying to square the damage and get back to work and process what has happened. again, no one hurt. but there is damage to the facility and also containers like this one. back in to you guys. >> justin finch live in maryland. >> look at other top stories. prince george's is always considering adding speed cameras to indian head highway. one of the dangerous roads in the area. >>

to that iagency to decide when it's released. last month park police were chasing him down gw parkway when fairfax county police were asked to assist. he cashed and police shot him three times in the head and he died ten days later. his family says he was not armed. only on news 4, the victim of a burglary is telling her story with the hopes of sparking change. daisy maggette woeg up to find a teenager in her capital heights home. he stole her keys and took off with another teen. two 16-year-olds were arrested she knew who the suspects were before they broke into her home. it's a sign that juvenile justice system isn't working right. >> they said oh, we know who this is because we've arrested them three times already. you let them out and they come back and do the iic

>> a source tells news 4 at least one of the teens was already on probation when he was arrested this time. maggette is hoping they face stricter penalties when they appear in court next week. d.c. mayor muriel bowser will discuss stopping robberies in the district. the task force works with several different law enforcement agencies to discuss patterns and suspects. the work caused robberies to decline since last year. the mayor will asked -- they will talk about the exchange location program. it provides a safe place for people to complete transactions of online purchases. fallen star. kevin spacey accused in a sex scandal. what's next for the actor and his hit show, house of cards. >> a child not breathing. the one thing we can all learn from a police officer who saved a newborn and the

we've got breaking news at the live desk. "the new york times" is reporting that congressman john conyers is not going to run for reelection. he's going to formally make an announcement within the next hour or two. the times is reporting according to a family member of conyers that he's not going to seek reelection. of course, a woman is settling a sexual harassment claim with conyers. others have accused him of sexual harassment. he is not stepping down or resigning. he's simply 88 years old, and citing a reason of not in good health for the decision not to run for reelection. again, congressman john conyers, this announcement probably will be formally announced in the next hour or two. aaron, back to you. >> chris lawrence at the live desk. 6:38 now. house of cards will continue without his main character. the netflix series announced yesterday it

episodes without kevin spacey. production was stopped as he was investigated for sexual assault investigation. he has since been fired. focused entirely on robin wright's character. blair underwood. it is filmed in the baltimore area. the mother of a newborn baby girl is thanking god for a police officer's quick action. >> that georgia police officer saved her baby and it was caught on the officer's body camera. you can see the officer running up to the frantic mother. she hands him her lifeless 29 day old newborn bell la. what he did next saved her life. >> it was in my arms. the first reaction was oh, my goodness. what can i do? that's when i was -- instantly i knew it was -- >> one minute after he started the compressions,

breaking news right now. hundreds of packages could be destroyed after a fire inside a ups facility overnight. >> this was the scene when firefighters arrived in frederick, maryland. getting a look at the damage. justin finch is there live with the latest. justin? >> just off of -- looking at perhaps the worst of the damage here. this container here completely gutted and destroyed by this fire. looking closely, we now see it's wood framed underneath the metal coating here. as you can see, damage to that conveyor belt looking at boxes that are burned and weighed down by water. the report is that close to 11:30 last night there was a fire that broke out in that ups building behind us back there. ten trucks were damaged in that fire and of course putting all the

perhaps the preeminent question right now, did the president obstruct justice? this is a reference to the tweet on the screen that was written now said by an outside lawyer of the president where he insisted in part that the president knew that michael flynn lied to both the vice president and the fbi. the timeline surrounding that before the then fbi director james comey says the president, in effect, well, basically said let it go on the flynn case would indicate that it could have been obstruction of justice. the personal lawyer to the president says that that whole claim is ignorant. but at the same time, there does appear to be a rift between the president's legal team. you have one attorney suggesting that president trump cannot obstruction justice. he's the chief law enforcement officer. according to the constitution. this morning the white house counsel, the lawyer here at the white house overseeing the russia inquiry said that's not a strategy they're focusing on. back to yo

the "today" show in a little bit. peter, thanks. the trial for a former metro transit police officer accused of trying to help isis begins today. according to court documents, nicholas young believed a friend had joined isis in 2014. that friend was actually an fbi informant. when the fbi asked about his friend, he tried to mislead them. the fbi had been watching young for six years before this sting operation. if convicted, young faces up to 60 years in prison. there will be a public hearing tonight to discuss adding speed cameras to indian head highway in prince george's county. right now, there are no cameras on route 210 but some local leaders think having them would cut down on the number of deadly crashes on that road. there's an average of six each year. the meeting will be held on the campus of prince george's community college in largo. three arlington county elementary school teachers are accused of smoking pot on school

integrity to the process by providing students, parents and the broader community with answers." fire investigators are trying to figure out if somebody intentionally set a fire at an apartment building in southeast d.c. you can see the damage on the screen. the fire left one man critically injured. several residents had to be escorted out into the cold for safety, including a toddler. temporary shelter was set up by the nearby udc workforce development center. >> we saw a lot of the residents standing in the cold after the incident took place. so once i gained approval, we opened up the doors. coordinated that with security of course. you can see police. opened up the doors for some of the residents to come inside and warm up. >> we know the fire started on the first floor of the building. several residents were treated on the scene. the arson unit is investigating the fire. breaking news right now. you are looking at the deadly
