are detectives processing evidence inside and seeing if it matches up with what this man told them. at this point, they say it was a tragic accident. the 11-year-old babysitter accidently shot him in the upper body in the suit land townhouse around 6:40 this evening. the 33-year-old, who is former military was putting away his legally owned gun. the man drove the injured boy to joint base andrews hospital. the doctors got him stable enough to be transported to children's hospital. >> we do believe this was a tragic, tragic accident. the 33-year-old man is distraught. we are speaking with him now. so we are very much in the early stages of this investigation. >> reporter: now police tell us that the boy's mother is also with him at the hospital.

firefighters have been working along the front lines for more than 24 hours now trying to save what they can, but they're still nowhere close to containing the flames. jay gray has the latest now from ventura, california. >> reporter: the firefight continues overnight. the smoke an orange glow in the california hills a clear indication mother nature is still winning battle here. >> they continue to challenge us. the fire is over 50,000 acres and still growing. we have a mandatory evacuation in the air wrea around the enti fire. >> reporter: tens of thousands have rushed to safety including john and his wife. who were able to save their pets. >> it's all gone. >> reporter: entire communities have been swallowed by the flames. doctors and nurses rushed to get patients out of the hospital,
