life-threatening injuries. we want to turn to the devastating wildfires in california. >> chris lawrence is following the latest at the live desk. any progress here? >> unfortunately, no. nearly a dozen wildfires burning in southern california. the biggest and most destructive is the thomas fire which forced jerry brown to declare a state of emergency. that blaze has burned 85 square miles, destroyed at least 150 buildings and forced nearly 30,000 people to evacuate since it all broke out on monday. one evacuee got understandably emotional when talking about what this fire has done. >> our whole lives were wrapped up in that house. everything. it's all gone. everything. >> at last check the thomas fire is zero percent contained. just to put this into perspective for you, we've been talking about this story for about 45 seconds. the fire is

second. just since i started talking, 45 acres, gone. back to you. >> that is staggering. 4:31. a man charged with shooting at a montgomery county church twice is in jail. police arrested peter banfield on wednesday after getting a tip from someone who attends new life seventh day add ven tis church. they say he shot into the church in batgaithersburg twice last month. the shooting of an unarticled d.c. man is being called unjustified after they found out brian trainer violated the policy. the d.c. review board says the officer should be fired. police were chasing sterling in september of 2016. officers say sterling's motorcycle ran into a cruiser. that's when trainer fired two shots killing

transparent about this. he has 55 business days to either accept the recommendation he be fired or challenge it by requesting a hearing. a major u.s. foreign policy change sh developing this morning. today president trump is expected to recognize jerusalem as israeli capital. israel already recognizes jerusalem as its capital city, however, the international community does not because palestinians also claim jerusalem as their capital. this also means the u.s. embassy in tel aviv could be moved to jerusalem, but that could take several years. u.s. allies in europe, including france, oppose the change in policy and believe the decision will hurt relations with muslim countries. today donald trump jr. will be on the hot seat on capitol hill. he'll appear to answer questions about his direct contacts with people connected to the kremlin. the committee is looking into

again, two vehicles that looks involved in this crash in aspen hill. let me tell you what is closed because it could be shut down for a while. take a look at the map. we're talking about georgia avenue shut down both ways between aspen hill road and ripling brook drive. it occurred in the area of hewitt avenue if you're familiar with that area in silver springs. happened around 2:00 a.m. could be in place for some time. spill way looking okay here, inner loop and outer loop, everything moving along fine. no major problems and no construction or anything like that. right now, 270 southbound, 70 to the spur, you are on time, same thing headed northbound. good morning, chuck and sheena. >> good morning. looking at a cold front moving through the area right now, which is why the rain -- i was about to walk away. did you like that move? >> very subtle, but -- >> i'm actually just stretching. >> going to do some weather

fairfax who has choice words but he calls the hike in tolls unacceptable because we're talking some $40 to travel along the i-66 corridor. it's unexpected and extremely high cost for a lot of folks to get to work. according to vdot, the prices during the morning rush open up around $11 and close at $15.75. a trip along that nine-mile corridor range from $3.75 at 5:40 in the morning all the way to 40 bucks a couple of hours later at 8:06 a.m. here's what supporters of the tolls are pointing to. the average speed was 54 miles per hour compared to 37 miles per hour just last year this time. that certainly suggests traffic is moving along, along the i-66 corridor during rush hour. that's the goal but folks like representative hugo

fulfilling a campaign promise to move the embassy to jerusalem, but we're being told that could take several years as they try to figure out where the site is going to be, construction. so, that part the president is expected today won't happen immediately. back to you. >> tracie potts on the hill this morning, thank you. i'm chris lawrence at the live desk. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is set to speak at annual jerusalem conference and coming on the same day donald trump is expected to recognize jerusalem as the capital of jerusalem. the president plans to instruct the state department to begin the process of moving the american embassy to tel aviv to the holy city, at that could take several years. the decision was made despite intense opposition from arab, muslim and some european nations as well. the white house schedule shows president trump is expected to make the statement on jerusalem at 1:00 this afternoon. we'll be following this for you

back to you. >> thank you, chris. it's 4:49. former white house adviser steve bannon is unleashing attacks on democrats and republicans. he was fired up at a rally for alabama senate candidate roy moore last night. several women have accused moore of inappropriate sexual behavior. moore denies those allegations. last night bannon took aim at moore's democratic challenger doug jones and former gop presidential candidate mitt romney. >> judge roy moore has more honor and integrity in his pinkie finger than your whole family does in their dna. >> jones says men who hurt little girls should go to jail and not the united states senate. arizona senator jeff flake caused a social media buzz when he tweeted this $100 check made out to jones' campaign with, country over party. firefighters rushed to the scene of this house in

an explosion. this shows you what's left on the woodlawn homes. adjacent homes were also damaged. authorities say there were no reported injuries, though. no word on what caused the explosion and fire. new details about a suspicious fire and the man found hurt inside. d.c. fire crews found the man on the floor of the third street home last night with his arms restrained behind him and severe injuries to his face. police believe someone beat him and then set the place on fire around 7:00 p.m. the victim was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition. 4:51. this next story is something that is devastating, especially during a holiday season. we brought you this as breaking news. hundreds of u.p.s. packages were destroyed or water-logged at a facility in fredericksburg late

years. last year we had to wait until january 30th to get our first inch of snow in what was a snow-challenged winter. the 2014-15 winter we had to wait until january 22nd for the first inch but that turned into 24 inches of snow with the big blizzard. back in march of -- back in 2013, we had to wait all the way until the end of march before we got our first inch of snow. so, it has been tough to get snow around here the last couple of years in the month of december. right now it is 51 degrees. that's above our average high temperature already. but northwest winds will bring colder air in during the course of the day. mid-40s now in montgomery county. near 40 in frederick, maryland. upper 30s across the shenandoah valley. temperatures pretty much hovering where they are or trending downward. we'll get sunshine back later on. the rain chances are coming to an end very quickly. still a few lingering drops in southern maryland early this morning. but that also will not last t
