a cold start to your morning. warm coat, the clouds will hang around today. not much in the way of sunshine. there's that storm system. it's starting to come together down south. rain and snow with it. that's going to be closer to us. i'll show you what to expect coming up. thank you, sheena. we'll start out with break news on the wildfires burning in california. take a look at the pictures. six fires now burning across the state including a new one that broke out in san diego county. in all, about 500 buildings destroyed, 5700 firefighters are working the frontlines trying to get a handle on the fires. let's go to jinah kim in ventura with more on the biggest challenges facing the firefighters this morning. good morning, jinah. >> good morning, chris. what a difference 24 hours makes. this time yesterday we were el

fires in southern california, mostly contained to the general l.a. area. since then, we've added the lilac fire and the liberty fire in murieta. the lilac fire being the one they're most concerned about right now. as you mentioned, the number of structures and homes damaged or destroyed has gone way up. we're talking about a 300% increase from what we were reporting 24 hours ago. the number of evacuations, however, has been remaining steady at about 200,000 people. the good news is, we're having less wind today. about 55 mile an hour gusts is what we're expecting compared to the hurricane strength winds yesterday. that's an improvement. live in ventura, jinah kim. back to you. >> that is some good news there. thank you. thofrts aauthorities are gog

i-95 to search for the remains of pamela butler. she disappeared in 2009. news 4 was first to report butler's boyfriend jose rodriguez cruz told investigators he buried her body there. they will close the exit starting around 107k this morning. rodriguez cruz pleaded guilty to killing butler earlier this year. hundreds of people gathered at the lincoln memorial to remember dee john guy czar. he was a young man shot and killed by park police. the family is looking for answers and demanding transparency throughout this investigation. here's what happened. police followed his suv after a hit-and-run accident on the gw parkway near reagan. officers tried to stop him. they say he led them on to a chase into fairfax county. he was shot three times in the

the republican said he made two female staffers feel uncomfortable. franks resignation is the third one this week. we'll have more about when senator al franken says he's stepping down. just days after president trump endorsed polarizing alabama senate candidate roy moore, he will hold a campaign-style rally a short drive away from alabama. the president will be in pensacola today, about 28 miles from the border. moore has been accused of having inappropriate sexual relationships with several women, including some under the age of 18. moore is facing off against doug jones in a tight race. tracie potts will join us with details coming up. today marks one year since mgm national harbor opened. hard to believe it's been a yeefrmt remember what it looked like on opening day.

♪ prayers after a school shooting leaves two students dead in new mexico. overnight new mexico state police identified the students killed as casey marquez and -- they comforted one another to ask why this happened in their small community. the shooting started as a school day was starting yesterday. aztec, new mexico is near the border with colorado. students recorded cell phone videos of them hiding in their

through the school shooting. he died but police aren't saying how or if the person was a student. this story is getting a lot of attention on social media. a police officer in florida is suffering from ptsd since the pulse nightclub shooting. omar delgado is unfit for regular duty. delgado says he constantly relives the shooting from june of last year and often has nightter roars. his firing came six months shy of being with the department. he will receive 42% of his salary through a disability pension. a poem about fractions, a new way of teaching. tracee wilkins takes us into the classroom to see how it works. >> think positive. >> this is math and science class at an elementary schoo
