"news4 today" working for you to plan ahead. >> that's right. we have crews stretched out over the region. of course, we have chuck bell standing by in manassas. first, we want to get to the forecast. the storm team meteorologist sheena parveen. yeah, you've been following this pattern around we're getting more snow than thought. >> what's going on is the track change in the storm, which is a minor change. that's increasing the storm chances. >> what's going on now, i'm sure it's going to happen again. here's all the snowfall. take a look at this. southern texas through louisiana and mississippi along the gulf coast. streaming in from parts of mexico. that is snow. ho

cold air is and locally we have some hints of flurries kind of induced by the mountains near luray, charlottesville. we'll be watching for that. your wake-up weather. temperatures mid to upper 30s. look at future weather. here's the wide view. there's the storm system offshore. that is snowfall. we expected more widespread now into your saturday morning. we'll zoom in on this. we'll show you more detail what you can expect for your saturday and the totals in a bit. let's check the roads before you head out on your friday. >> good morning, sheena. chopper 4 moved to the east. powder mill road at edmonton road. right now traffic is alternating around this. completely shut down. a short time in beltsville. southbound bw parkway at powder mill. we had that crash investigation from overnight. the lanes have reopened. that's looking better. >> outer loop before georgia. left side blocked by the crash. inner loop, outer loop everywhere else looking good right

66 and 95 just fine as well. >> thank you, melissa. >> ready or not. here comes the snow. am i ever ready? >> i don't know. these are just a few flakes. >> it is enough to get the vdon crews on the roads to prepare. aimee cho riding around fairfax county. what can we expect to see throughout the morning aimee. >> the trucks are under way. you can tell by the white lines on the roads. the vdot trucks with the brine solution on the roads. very important to get the treating process started early. keeps ice from forming on the roads as you're commuting into work this morning. even though they are -- still be careful and watch out for slick spots, especially in the shaded areas and bridges. they're asking for your help. if you're in a neighborhood where you park on the streets, all park your cars on the same

that makes it easier for the trucks and the plows to get through. we'll continue to monitor the road conditions. eun, chris? >> great reminder. thanks, aimee. >> chuck and sheena have been warning us about the chance for a few snow showers tonight into tomorrow. >> some of the other agencies are preparing for trouble that they could run into pretty soon. wsse went out to look at potential pipe and water main problems as the temperatures get ready to -- want to encourage folks to look for problems as the season goes on. >> overnight freeze and a wet weekend forecast as crews out in the southeast preparing for a rare winter storm in atlanta. crews were busy spreading saltwater brine on the roads. mississippi crews doing the same thing. this is the first time crews have been deployed to salt the roads in jackson county since 2014

to download the nbc washington app. we'll keep an eye on the roads and update the forecast and the potential for snow where you live. let's start with breaking news at 6:04. the wildfires burning in california. take a look at new images from nasa. this is what the southern california wildfires look like. the fires scorched more than 140,000 acres and destroyed 500 structures. >> now the newest fire is burning in san diego county. the lilac fire destroyed dozens of mobile homes in a retirement community. they have started to reconfigure local high schools as evacuations centers. those are filling up pretty quickly as the fire gets closer and closer to the homes. the biggest challenge for firefighters this morning, the strong dry winds. they're going to continuously be fueling the fires. >> hundreds of people gathered at the lincoln memorial to remember bijan gha

fun-loving young man. he was shot and killed by park police last month. the family is demanding transparency throughout the investigation into that shooting. here's what happened. police say they followed ghaisar's suv after a hit-and-run accident on the gw parkway near reagan national airport. officers tried to stop him but say they led him on a chase into fairfax county. he was shot three times in the head after a short chase. friends and family remembered him rat a vigil last night. >> my dearest bijan. dance with the angels who love laughter. you always expressed that happiness. >> ghaisar's family says he was unarmed. the fbi is now investigating this case. we also saw candles, tears and prayers after a school shooting left two students dead in new

students killed as casey marquez and fernandez. they had a vinl i wigil to comf another. the shooting happened as the school day was getting started on thursday. aztec, new mexico is near the border with colorado. students recorded cell phone video of themselves hiding in a classroom as the man moved throughout the school. the shooter died. police haven't said how or if he was a student there. shutdown averted. congress struck a deal to prevent the government from shutting down. the agreement helps to buy time for challenging talks on everything from immigration to aid for hurricane ravaged states and puerto rico. lawmakers passed a two-week spending bill yesterday. it's now headed to the president's desk where he's expected to sign it. >> big relief for those who work for the federal government. in days after president trump endorsed alabama

to hold a campaign-style rally a short way from alabama. the president will be in pensacola 28 miles from the border. he's been accused of inappropriate sexual relationships with women, some under the age of 18. moore is facing off against doug jones in this tight race and tracie potts will break down some of the details. we are two months away from the start of the winter olympics in south korea and there are concerns about the athletes' safety. in an interview, u.n. ambassador nikki haley suggested that u.s. participation in the winter olympics was still up in the air. >> there's an open question. it's always about how do we protect the u.s. citizens in the area. >> more confusion. at a white house briefing where sarah huckabee sanders says "no official decision has been made." she later tweeted the u.s. athletes will compete.

darn good especially for a friday morning. south frederick to the spur, you're on time. chris? >> thanks, melissa. it's one the major cases that sparked conversation about police and race. now a former south carolina police officer will serve 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man. back in 2015, michael slager shot him as he was running away from a traffic stop. that shooting was caught on camera. he's happy about the 20-year prison sentence. >> i am rejoicing and i'm glad in it. >> actually is incredible. >> slager pleaded guilty to violating civil rights after the jury deadlocked in the state's murder trial against him last year. the former prince george's county school aide who sexually abused students has been transferred to

been september to a high security prison in tucson, arizona. he will likely spend the rest of his life there. scheduled release date is december 20, 2082. caraway was convicted of sexually abusing more than 20 children at sylvania wood elementary school. there have been 11 reported burglaries since thanksgiving. the thieves are mainly stealing people's medication. may play into the opioid crisis we've been hearing about. the sheriff's office is reminding people to lock their doors and windows before leaving for the day. this is a major party foul. a tractor-trailer spilled a load of vodka on an on ramp to 95 outside of philadelphia. it took crews nearly ten hours to clean up the boxes of cheetos vodka. do you think they're getting exposure with all the alcohol

>> the car pulls up behind you. little snow this weekend. >> it's going to feel like winter out there. like the lights look. everything -- you're going to see the snowfall. snow on the way. here's the weather system. it's still down to the south. look at how far south the snow is. texas, louisiana. right along the gulf coast. that is not normal for this time of year. it goes to show you when the cold air from canada goes far enough south and combines with -- we have a few flurries to the mountains but temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. bundle up before you head out. your friday morning commute, cold but dry. today we are dry. we're not looking at the snow falling for today's commute. here is future weather. we're looking at 6:00 p.m. temperatures topping out locally in the low 40s. then you notice at the edge of your screen, a little bit of snow trying

we'll be seeing that as well. that's the storm system getting closer and organizing and moving offshore. that's the key here. we have a slight change in the track of the storm. that's why we're increasing the storm chances. the edge of the system bringing snow by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. through the district, towards gaithersburg. leesburg and that edge, again, doesn't go into the entire area. sits near the district and slightly north and west. that's 11:00 a.m. saturday. then it pulls away through the afternoon we start to dry out. it is going to be cold. >> i've updated the snowfall totals. 1 to 3 inches around the district. 2 to 4 going farther south and east of the district. less than 1 if you're farther west. travel impact. the roads mainly wet. side road would be slippery though. sticking to the grass, we do expect temperaturewise for the weekend, we're only looking oot the upper 30s. next snow chance comes tuesday. we'll take a closer lo

anyone with an aging parent. >> scammers are targeting some homeowners living in neighborhoods where home prices are rising fast. people are getting deceptive adds in the mail designed to trick them out of their homes. they say final notice, urgent and time sensitive. companies are trying to lowball seniors and trying to get them to sell. >> one of the things about a lot of these seniors, they wonder, did i not pay my bill? what's happening with me? they fall prey to the fact that they're getting these notices. >> councilman kenyon mcduffy introduced a bill to protect seniors from these scams. it would allow d.c.'s attorney general to go after the companies putting up the flyers. it's now 6:24. we continue to track the breaking news. the wildfires in california. take a look now at new video showing a firefigh t

prevent fire from crossing the fence. look at all the flames. you can see it's already engulfed the other home. the video was captured by the firefighters helmet camera. outside of l.a. right now, six fires are burning in southern california. >> him trying to protect that home. jinah kim is live in ventura now. what are you seeing out there right now? >> reporter: you know what, unfortunately, we're seeing the gusts pick back up again. it was supposed to die down from yesterday. as we've been standing here, the winds have been getting worse and worse, which is not great news for firefighters. having said that, we should be a little bit better than yesterday when we had hurricane-strength winds if you recall. that pushed the numbers way up. basically, increased the -- from four fires in the l.a. area down to the mexico border. we added two new fires, the lilac as well as the

this shows you how far south the cold canadian air has gone. it's going to eventually organize more and off the coastline. a slight change in the track of the storm like this. it means a change in our forecast. a few flurries possible near luray near charlottesville. temperatures as you step outside. mid to upper 30s. we stay dry. not worrying about the snow falling and causing an issue. by 7:00 p.m. we could start to see signs of it south and east of the area. mainly south and east of charles county. then tomorrow, that's when we'll see snow falling across the area. coming up, we'll break down the timing of your saturday morning. what you can expect as far as amounts are concerned. it is friday. we'll check your community. let's check in with melissa. >> silver spring, found this crash here over the beltway. southbound, colesville before university boulevard. have a vehicle versus a big truck here this morning. you can see some of those delays

francisco fernandez. the shooting started as the school day was beginning. students recorded videos on their cell phones as the gunman moved through the school. the gunman died but they're not saying how or whether the shooter was a student. finally answers for the family of pamela butler. her boyfriend recently pled guilty to killing her in 2009. >> police have at least enough information to find her remains. news 4's megan mcgrath is live in stafford county where police will start their search later this morning. megan, what can you tell us about what's going on there? >> reporter: the searchers are going to begin staging and getting ready in a matter of hours. we're told that pamela butler's brother will be on hand when the search begins this morning. the family, of course, hoping that the ordeal will come to an end today.

the man who has confessed to killing butler, her one-time boyfriend, jose rodriguez cruz, he's now helping police in the search in exchange for a lighter sentence. now, rodriguez cruz has led investigators to a stretch of the median that is stretching the north and southbound lanes -- he said he buried butler's body there when he killed her in 2009. the search getting under way in a matter of hours. butler's family hoping that this will finally come an end. >> i want her to -- that's what i want. i want her. >> reporter: now a limited stretch of the 95 express lanes will be closed as the search goes on for a couple of hours today. people should be aware of that. regular lanes ever 95 will not be affected. back

i hope it may bring the family a measure of peace. >> a warning for some of you drivers there. >> frederick county reopened. chopper 4 was over the monocacy river bridge crashed. it damaged a part of the bridge which carries route 355 over the river. all traffic is being detoured on the 270 while some of the critical repairs get done. 635, northern virginia call it highway robbery. they're pushing back against $40 trip hunts. 66 during rush hour. the tolls are working. they're cheaper for drivers than predicted. the average round trip price on the first day of the toll lanes was $14.50. that is lower than the $17 vdot initially estimated. some state senators still want to stop tolling until they can get the prices under control. closing up shop. a yoga store shutting down its doors. a
