accumulate here until maybe 9:00 or 10:00 this morning. we're playing the waiting game. the air is relatively dry. the other issue is we're just a little above freezing. we have a couple challenges first. but i have great confidence we should be able to get our first inch, maybe our first two or three inches of snow, before the day is done. >> i concur, chuck. during the 4:00 hour, we had a report at reagan we had light snow falling. this is not hitting the ground. we are, as chuck said, expecting to see some of the lighter snow start to pick up in the next couple of hours. southern maryland at this point seeming to get a little break. we're going to be watching the zone closely. it could be getting mixed precip through the next coming hours. here's what you may have missed while you were sleeping. we shifted the timing from the bulk of the snow in the metro area to mid-morning. i hope you postponed a lot of e

>> activities cancelled. no transit busses. businesses closed, as well. derrick ward is out there for us. >> what does it look like out there? >> reporter: we're just outside hollywood, maryland. what we're seeing right now are wet road surfaces. now, there was some accumulation on the side of the road. definitely had some snow. once it hits this pavement, temperature is probably high enough that it is going to melt and give you wet pavement. along the grassy areas, we're seeing some white. that's some of what happened last night. it's getting a little more significant as we move south along route 235. right now, wipers are going to do it for you if you are in this area. again, with this time frame you have, things will come down later here in southern

back at 6:08. police believe they found a spot where a d.c. woman was buried but they're not going to dig there to search for her remains. >> darcy spencer spoke to the woman's family about the disappointment after almost nine years of searching. cadaver dogs searched i-95 for the body of pamela butler. it is where her boyfriend turned confessed killer said he buried her years ago. hours of searching turned up nothing. it was a blow for her brother, derrick, and the rest of the family. how are you and your family dealing with that? >> disappointed

but i was there. i know that they did search. they worked at it very hard. you know, you don't win them all. >> reporter: the federal worker went missing more than eight years ago. a break in the case finally came with a confession from her boyfriend, jose rodriguez cruz, who promised to lead detectives to her body for a lighter sentence. while search dogs alerted to one area, no remains were found. he said to him, his sister is still missing. >> if we could get her, give her a proper resting place, then we know where she's at. we don't know where she's at at this point. >> reporter: police told butler they're not going to continue searching. that's because a section of road where cruz allegedly buried her has been a site of road construction over the years. ten feet of dirt added in some areas. 30 feet in others. >> of course i'd like them to go back out there.

realistic. >> reporter: cruz is facing a second degree murder charge on a plea deal. while butler didn't get what he hoped for on the search, he know es he has to move forward. darcy spencer, news 4. time is 6:10. we want to get you breaking news. getting updates in on what is a horrific crash along i-270 in rockville. it requires a heavy response from emergency crews late last night. we're just learning this, this just coming into the newsroom, that two off duty law enforcement officers were killed while standing on the shoulder of the road. maryland state police telling us the officers were responding to an initial crash around 10:00 last night. both men were thrown over the jersey wall where one was hit by anion coming car. the name of the officers haven't been released. devastating situation. we'll keep you updated as soon as we get more infoat

good morning. all right. i was just walking through the lobby, talking with the snowplow driver here at the station. he said, i'm waiting on something to do. i said, enjoy the wait because it is not going to be long. we are expecting some snow to move in mid-morning, especially in the d.c. metro area. here's a look at the road temperatures though. the initial snowfall may not stick in our area. i-95 noorthbound in springfield still above freezing. i-270 -- i-370, not at the freeding poifreed i -- freezing level. you can expect the dprgrassy ar, the trees to be icy. main roads will be looking mostly fine. the secondary roads could be slick if they're not treated. the sidewalks will need to be solve shovelled. we'll talk snow totals coming up. back to

>> we'll check in with you on a few. let's take you out west where the fire devastation in southern california has turned deadly. a 70-year-old woman has been identified as the first death from the largest of the wildfires that are happening right now. officials say the woman was found trapped in a car. california fire officials say the thomas fire has burned 143,000 acres. it is only 10% contained at this hour. a change in the weather has helped extra aircraft fight from above, but really, this fight is far from over. >> mother nature is writing the rule book on this right now. >> when a tornado hits the midwest, there's no stopping it. when a hurricane hits the east coast, there's no stopping it. when the santa ana winds come in, there's no stopping them. >> they have plowed through some 500 homes and businesses, all of them destroyed. strike teams expected to have to work now through christmas so as to put out all these fires. the cdc is warning this flu season o

it is likely to get more serious. there are more than double the number of flu cases that normally happen this time of year. nbc medical correspondent dr. john torres as the latest on how to protect your family. >> reporter: cleaning crews scrubbing down to sanitize a school near st. louis that was shut down this week after nearly one quarter of students got the flu. >> right now, i don't want to be out in the general public, just because there's so many kids that are sick. >> reporter: across the country, it is going to get worse as the holidays approach, with families traveling and spending time together. cdc reported widespread flu activity in seven states. 10,000 cases have already been reported so far this year, more than twice as many as last year at this time. doctors are also worried that the flu shot may only be 10% effective against this year's main strain of the flu. it doesn't mean you shouldn't bother getting the shot. >> we very well could get a lot of protection from just getting vaccina

on the radio every ten minutes. there's news for you. also all our social media platforms. it is going to be a social media snow event. since school isn't in and most businesses don't have to open at an early time, it is going to be a social snow for us. be sure you're tagging nbc washington in any of your social media posts. you can also tag me directly, as well. here's what you need to know. could be our earliest first inch of snow in ten years. last time we had an inch of snow this early was december 5th, 2012 2007. last year, we didn't get our first inch of snow until january the 30th. the winter before that, it was january 22nd. this will be a nice change of pace. 90% chance the d.c. metro area gets our first inch of snow. nothing is guaranteed with this event. temperatures are just above the freezing mark, and that could be a real trick for accumulating snow. most of the d.c. metro area is in the ballpark for one to four

one to two inches of snow before it winds down later today. two to four inches and snow flurries and showers are likely to continue on into the early parts of the evening. look at the temperatures just above freezing. that'll really help road conditions quite a bit. tomorrow morning will be below freezing but the snow will have stopped. any treated roads will be fine. bridges and overpasses tomorrow morning, be careful. here's what we're watching. not much going on yet. the wave of energy that's bringing snow to atlanta, georgia, right now, it is a ripple of pressure that will ride over us in the course of the afternoon. that's where the snow is right now. if it can snow in atlanta, it can snow here. ahead of it, really light snow flurries and snow showers. there has been a couple inches already across the lower eastern shore. future weather. 9:00 a.m. as i mentioned, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 a.m., that's when the accumulating snow chances move into the metro area. noon today. just about everybody should be ti

temperatures just at or above the freezing mark. by 3:00 or 4:00, a good chance of accumulating snow from d.c. and points south into parts of southern maryland. the snow will be tapering out by 3:00 in the shenandoah valley. 6:00 or 7:00, chances of snow ramp down. by 10:00 or 11:00 tonight, everything will be done. how much snow? this is the computer forecast. it brings the first inch toen a inch and a half on the ground around 1:00 or 2:00. this particular computer model is giving us around two inches of snow. with temperatures above freezing, this is going to be a razor thin margin between one and four inches of snow. it'll be temperature dependent. here's our storm team 4 forecast. most of the i-95 corridor is going to be in the two to four inch range, mainly on grassy areas. but there could be a boom

potential down from waldorf, through charles county, southern maryland. those places could get four to maybe -- if everything sets up just right -- as much as eight inches. the trick is, there is a lot more bust potential in southern maryland because the rain/snow line may try to push back by the afternoon. this will be a tricky forecast for sure. the planner for tomorrow. cloudy skies below freezing in the morning, so watch out. any untreated surfaces, handrails, stairs could be icy and slippery tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon, a gusty northwest wind. it'll stay very close during the day tomorrow. five-day outlook. low to mid 30s today. two to four inches on average. sunday, breezy and cold. fund, cloudy. keeping a close eye on tuesday morning, as well. slightly warm air tries to push in. it might wring out a rain drop. we may have a freezing rain concern on tuesday morning. we'll keep you pos

you. we do want to start off though with chuck bell, who is tracking it all from the storm team 4 weather center. start us off. what do we know? >> winter weather advisories for much of the i-95 corridor. we have a winter storm warning in southern maryland, the lower parts of the eastern shore. that's are the higher snow possibilities are greatest, down from waldorf southbound to st. mary's county and also down toward the northern neck in fredericksburg. those will be the favorite areas because this is a costal storm. from our tower camera looking out to the east, still cloudy skies at this point in time. temperatures are also still mostly above the freezing mark. take a look at our tower camera. nothing but cloud cover. we're looking for snowflakes. if you see a snowflake, send me a picture of it so we can try to share it with everybody at home. temperature wise, we are in the 30s. 38 now at national airport. we can

airport. 35 in fredericksburg and joint base andrews. for today, as you're planning out your saturday, light snow moving in. heavier to the south by 8:00 or 9:00. likely to have our first inch by late morning, the lunchtime here in the d.c. metro area. most of the metro should be able to get two to four inches. might only be one and a half at national. most of the metro, probably in the two to four inch range. this is the wave of low pressure around atlanta. that'll run over us during the afternoon. that will be our best chance for accumulating snows later in the day. going to get the temperatures down a few more degrees. i'll show the forecast map in a few. meantime, you heard chuck mention there, the next few hours, expecting snow to be coming down here in the district. >> that's right. maryland has been getting ready for some snow since friday afternoon. schools have been closing. >> no transit. businesses closed. they were e

blown snow mode. >> exactly. we have derrick ward live in st. mary's county. what are things looking like? >> reporter: on the side of the road, we can see what the significant snowfall was they saw early this morning. the crews were out. a truck in front of us is putting down brine. you can see the snowflakes now. it is looking a lot like snowfall. again, it is not sticking to the pavement, partially because it is treated and partially because of the temperature. hovering between 32 to 33 degrees. they did err on the side of caution with a lot of the events and things that might have been scheduled for today. most activities associated with the school system that would be practices and games have been cancelled. public transportation system is suspended today. it'll pick up again tomorrow. most of the activitie

a large fire in capital heights. three town homes suffered more than $200,000 in damage. the red cross is now helping the 12 residents who were displaced from their homes. thankfully, the fire has been put out and no one was injured. a school threat landing a 17-year-old in a detention center. police in falls church said the teen made threats to shoot up his school. the student attends george mason high school. investigators saying he told other students he wanted to hurt classmates and teachers. police found replica type weapons, including bb guns, inside his home. another student turned that one student in to administrators. the teen is not being identified because of his age. this is a story you will only see on news 4. an associate superintendent in prince george's county is on administrative leave. it is all because of an a -- he is accused of chasing a student and gapping her after she

a source said he was driving behind a bus heading to high school. trash hit his car and he followed the bus to the school. >> the administrator followed the bus to the school and boarded the bus and tried to confront the individual. they reported it to the school. >> faucet is accused of chasing the girl and grabbing his arm. he denies grabbing her. the school spokesperson said an investigation is underway. an argument between co-workers left one man dead after a shooting on the old walter reed campus. wright was arrested oen a mur e charge for killing yesterday average. both were construction drivers. police don't know what sparked the argument, but they say they have a bad trac

the roads are dry as a bone. lots of salt treatment in anticipation of the snow due to come our way sometime this morning. i can tell you right now, we have seen people out walking their dogs, going out for runs. it appears the time right now for the errands and activities is going to be right now, before the snow begins to fall. just recently, we did see light rain hit our windshield out here. it's since dried up. we know it is coming. as of right now, we have not seen anything really fall and make an impact on the ground or the road out here so far. again, we have seen d-dot crews who are standing by and ready for this snow as it begins to pick up today. as far as the roads go, they're looking safe. they are looking dry. as was said earlier, now is the time to get out here and run the errands if you really need to, before the snow really starts to make its way in. we are live here in northwest. i'm justin finch, news 4. back to
