good morning. let it snow. the first major winter storm of the season pelting the east coast. 73 million people in its path. even more unusual, the south getting pounded. nearly a foot of snow in alabama. north carolina, even more than that. the slippery conditions causing chaos on the roads. it is only getting started. dylan has her eye on it all. wildfires turned deadly. a new, devastating turn of events in southern california. one woman was killed after she got into a car accident trying to get away from the flames. this morning, nearly 10,000 firefighters are working tirelessly, trying to get six massive wildfires under control.

dreyer, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today." thanks for joining us on a saturday morning. i'm craig melvin. >> i'm sheinelle jones. dylan dreyer is here, as well. we are getting ready, aren't we? >> snow is coming. >> it certainly is. >> winter is a few weeks away though, but i guess snow doesn't care about winter. >> it doesn't care location either. southern texas, seven inches of snow in corpus christi. it's wild. >> unbelievable. >> the snow, our top story this morning. impressive totals as the storm makes its way north. in corpus christi, texas, dylan was talking about it, seven inches has already fallen on the ground there. >> alabama has gotten at least ten inches. highlands, north carolina, more than a foot. 15 inches and the number could rise this morning. >> the storm is moving up the east coast. the northeast preparing for anything between a dusting to a half foot of snow, depending on where you are. dylan tracking all of it. going to get bad in some places. >> it is.

season. you know, it's tough out on the roads for a lot of people. but this is the first major snowstorm of the season. as you pointed out, it is going to be a big one. a 2,000-mile stretch, blanketing areas where many people aren't used to seeing much, if any, of the white stuff. people living in the south waking up to an unusual sight, snow. the winter storm began way south. this traffic jam was in mexico. texas was next to get hit. >> all of a sudden, you hit the patch of ice and, man, you're in a wreck. >> 15-car pile up in san antonio. a record five inches of snow in college station. >> playoff football weather. >> we have snow. in houston. >> football star j.j. watt couldn't get enough of the unusual condition. >> this is awesome. >> 180,000 customers initially lost power as record amounts of

louisiana. schools and businesses closed early in atlanta. delta cancelled 625 flights at its hartsfield/jackson hub. >> little earlier, but we'll get through it. >> the northeast bracing for the season's first snowstorm. there's more than one way to look at the weather. >> i love the snow, especially around christmas. >> it is still snowing in atlanta right now. areas through texas, louisiana, alabama, mississippi, the snow is just about done there. but we are going to see this develop into an eastern system. because of that, we do have winter storm warnings up and down the east docoast. 71 million people will be impacted. though the snow won't accumulate on the roads, we'll still see dangerous conditions on the overpass especially. they freeze on both sides. we have to deal with this storm all day long. we are looking at as much as

to four inches in a wide stretch, from north carolina all the way up to new england. with isolated higher amounts closer to six inches, especially along the rain/snow line. to the northwest of that is where we could see higher totals. it'd be along the coast. eastern long island, could see closer to six inches of snow. we haven't had a taste of snow and then it's everywhere. >> it's enough to cripple major cities. >> thank you, dylan. now a major story out west. relent lis wiless wildfires sno signs of letting up. firefighters are working around the clock. some not taking a break since the wildfires began. some losing their own homes in the process. trying to take advantage of the calm winds before they pick back up. kristen dahlgren is in hard-hit ventura with

sheinelle. hundreds of structures burned now in this fire. one woman now confirmed killed. she was trying to flee, was in a car stent aaccident and overcome fire. the fires have, in total, burned 260,000 square miles. the thomas fire is 10% contained due to the light winds but i can already feel it picking up. the window with help from mother nature is closing fast. overnight, some progress on the ground. >> it's not as dire as it looked a few nights ago, however, there is a tremendous volume of fire out there. >> reporter: the life and death struggle far from over. knowing the brutal santa ana winds will be back later today. almost 9,000 firefighters now battling on the front line. many have been working six days straight. evacuees still wonderingwh

skiddish about the candidacy of roy moore, but there's still some burdens on doug jones's candidacy. in particular, his position, his support for abortion rights. some voters on the conservative side say they can't come over the line because of that issue. >> from twitter to rallies, president trump clearly all in on roy moore now. how much do you think that is going to help him on tuesday? the president's support. and how is trump's support playing outside alabama? >> it is an important factor. voters who i spoke with over the past four days say they may not love roy moore but they believe in president trump's agenda. to have that kind of full-throated support from the president just a few miles from the state over in pensacola, florida, that revs up the moore base. >> on that note, there is another piece to this. the early calls from top republicans came

tammy leitner, nbc news, aztec, new mexico. dylan is back with another check of the forecast. we're looking at the fires out west. hopefully the firefighters get some help. >> it would be nice to get some rain and less wind but, unfortunately, that's not really the case. we have a couple clouds off the coast. nothing that's really indicating we're going to see a whole lot of rain or an increase in humidity. we have the risk of fire danger from the santa barbara down to san diego. 20 million at risk. tomorrow, very little change. we're not looking at much fewer people impacted tomorrow, as well. let's take a look at the wind gusts. today, we're going to see the winds gusting up to around 20 to 30 miles per hour. they will increase overnight. we could see some isolated wind gusts up near 60 miles per hour. that helps to fan the flames. combine with the dry conditions, we are really not seeing any improvements for the fire danger out in the southwest. that's a look at the weather across the

now here's a peek out your window. >> good morning. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. at home, nothing more than a few light snowflakes inside the beltway. there is light snow toward fredericksburg, southern maryland. those are the places most likely to see the highest amounts of snow today. temperatures still above freezing around here. we can get snow to start falling at these temperatures. it won't stick to paved surfaces. most of our one to three, four inch possibility here will be on grassy areas. not on the roads. have you heard about bitcoin mania these days? it is an online currency that's seen a meteoric rise in price, especially this week. but prices took a dive on friday, and it could get worse this weekend once the professional traders get involved. morgan radford is here to explain. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we are talking about future. so starting on sunday, you'll be able to trade bitcoin on the market.

>> thank you, dylan. another major story that is developing is out west. it is raging wildfires burning out of control. six fires in all, keeping firefighters working around the clock. this morning, officials say one woman has died. she was trying to get away from the flames. nbc's kristen dahlgren is in hard-hit ventura with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, craig. yeah, this is the scene across so much of southern california right now. in all, all of the six fires, 264 square miles have burned. almost 700 structures have been destroyed. many of them homes like this. as you mentioned, one woman confirmed dead now, a 70-year-old. she was trying to evacuate, was in a car accident and was overcome by the fire. some of the evacuations have been lifted now today, as the fire burns into the national forest. people getting to come home to see what, if anything, is left of r

this saturday as we look live outside. tough to see through that, but we are starting to see our first snow falling here of the season. the district especially. as we welcome you in on this saturday. i'm david culver alongside my friend megan fitzgerald in for angie. i heard a yell in the newsroom a short time ago, and it was megaanne lemeg megan alerting us the snow was falling. >> it was exciting. i'm not a cold weatherperso per but it is cold so bring on the snow. >> we have a couple reporters in for us to help track it all. plus, two meteorologists. we have storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell alongside tamara theodore. >> lauryn has the day off. sort of a tribute to lauryn, our first snow. >> i'm always suspicious when meteorologists take off. they know it is coming. >> fast

ricketts on behalf of our first chance of snow this winter. >> we have the snow falling in the district right now. i want to get straight to the radar to show you guys. here's a look. we saw light snow earlier this morning. then it got overcast. at this point, we are seeing a steady, light snow coming down in the district. look toward woodbridge, this pocket still seeing some light rain. don't worry. it is coming your way. headed farther south, southern maryland yesterday was seeing the bulk of the snow. you can see southern st. mary's getting a break. to the north, leonard town seeing light snow. the next couple hours we're expecting more snow in southern maryland. what you need to know. the snow reported at reagan airport. the snow kicks up mid-morning. we were looking toward the earlier half of the morning. it is looking more like the mid-morning. if you haven't already, more than likely, a lot of outdoor plans will need to be rescheduled. we'll let you know how much snow we're expecting and how long it'll stick around coming up in a moment. chuck will have
