they have school closings, no activities on the weekend, transit is cancelled. full snow mode. derrick ward is live in st. mary's right now. >> what is it looking like? >> reporter: it is nice to look at and not bad to get around in. we are in leonard town. take a look. this is the scene. again, you can see they have decent snow. snow on the grass. the non-paved surfaces. paved surfaces, whether treated like these roads or just the ambient temperature makes it so, you can pass, there is no snow on that. we're even seeing grassy areas that are starting to be cleared of snow. we're getting the mix of rain and sne thow folks have talked about. mary's county, they are putting a lot of things on hold. high school activities, practices, games, things like that, outings, they've been postponed, put off because of this weather. they got ahead of the storm in terms of treating the

suffered more than $200,000 in damages. the red cross is now helping the 12 residents displaced from their homes. thankfully, no one was hurt. a school threat landing a 17-year-old in a detention center. police in falls church say the teen made threats to shoot up his school. the student attends george mason high school. investigators say he told other students that he wanted to hurt classmates and teachers. police found replica type weapons, including bb guns, in his home. another student turned him in to administrators. the teen isn't being identified because of his age. and this is a story you will only see on news 4. an associate superintendent in prince george's county is on administrative leave all because he is accused of chasing a student and grabbing her after she apparently littered. a source tells news 4 mark f faucet was driving behind a bus. trash hit the guy's car and he

school. >> the administrator followed the bus to the school and boarded the bus and tried to confront the individual. they reported it to the school. >> faucet is accused of chasing the girl and grabbing her arm. he denies he grabbed her. the school's spokesperson said an investigation is underway. an argument between co-workers left one man dead after a shooting on the old walter reed campus. d.c. police arrested 59-year-old wright on a murder charge. they say he shot and killed brian gibson yesterday morning off of georgia avenue. both men were shuttle bus drivers and drove construction crews to different job sites. police don't know what sparked the argument, but they do say these guys have a bad track record. president trump urging voters to cast a ballot for roy moore. the polarizing republican in the special senate election happening in alabama. p

something they've not seen in decades. you can see how snow snarled traffic along highways. that's northern mexico. hundreds of vehicles were left stranded in mountainous regions. for those not stuck in their car, they had a little fun. they celebrated the historic snowfall with snowball fights and a walk through the park. always good fun. we are working for you this morning to let you know where the trouble spots might be. let's continue our team coverage of this snow with news 4's justin finch. he is live for us in the outer loop of the beltway. justin, i see you're finally starting to see some snowflakes. >> reporter: yeah, we are seeing some snow, megan. may not be a lot but it's our snow for now. we made our way from the beltway outer loop, crossed the river into virginia and we're on a toll free 66 east going into d.c. take a look. the roads are looking pretty good this morning. we've not seen much accumulation on them.

friday across our area in preparation for the snow coming down today. what we've seen throughout the morning is traffic moving at speed. we've also begun to notice here on the sides of the road, you know, in the medians, all the hills here, that dusting is beginning to accumulate. the ground is getting colder. the roads appear to not be there at this time. of course, we've seen several crews on standby with the salt, ready to go, just in case the snow fwin begins to pick up qu and they have to get to work with the salting. we are seeing traffic move smoothly at this point throughout the area. we have been in northwest. we have been in prince george's and fairfax. across the area, consistent care being given to the roads this morning and people being able to move about and make their errands and activities happen so far early into our snowfall. we do know that areas

>> only two people know the combination and both don't work here. they're elsewhere. bob ryan somewhere is like, i know the combination. >> apparently we won't need it for right now anyway. >> not right now. i don't know that this is going to be a stick worthy event. we've not had any -- we only had one december snow that was stick worthy. that was the december 19th, 2009 event, the pre-christmas blizzard eight years ago, if you were here for that one. outside this morning, it is a cloudy sky. there's the view from our city camera overlooking the potomac river, the george washington parkway, passing to the north side of the runways there at national airport. not a lot of snow coming down but it is enough to whiten the ground in places. that's how it'll stay the next hour or so before it picks up a bit. there's what you need to know about the snow today. 90% chance of our first inch at national aodyrtill be in the one to four inch range. outside the beltway, more like the two range.

trickier, lower elevation and down next to the warm waters of the potomac, not to mention the runways. more snow likely into southern maryland. the trick is time for travel. i think it is likely to be after midnight tonight and before 9:00 a.m. tomorrow with a re-freeze issue. the roads are above freezing. likely not to be the case in the morning. tag nbc washington in any of the social media posts. there's my handles. again, our custom tailored storm team 4 forecast available on the nbc washington app. right now, in washington, it is light snow at 34 degrees. wind out of the north. with temperatures just above freezing, it'll stick to the grass but not the roads. colder in the shenandoah valley. that's where the snow is the lightest. wind chills are into the upper 20s and low 30s. not a lot of wind out there now. one to four inches for most of us today. cold and windy tomorrow. we're watching for a chance of

tuesday morning. have time between now and then. the planner for today, temperatures low to mid 30s and staying there all throughout the day. not likely to drop below freezing until after 8:00. last of the snowflakes likely done between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. there's the string of snowflakes, appalachians and western north carolina, where snow has been measured as much as 15 to 18 inches in western north carolina. for us, light snow just about everywhere now. seeing a lot of great pictures on my twitter feed. @chuck bell 4. i'll tweet them out for the rest of the day. again, here's future weather. the mix of rain and snow across the bay and southern maryland could limit amounts just a smidgen. around the d.c. metro area, should be all snow all the time. this is future weather at 4:30. 5:00 or 6:00, a quick end to the snow. as far as how much, one computer model thinking it'll be a little less than two inches. i'm cautiously optimistic, two to as much as four

woe won't be a big problem on the roads. tomorrow morning we could have a black ice issue so be careful for that. on monday, everything should be melted and gone before the end of the day on monday. that's good news. 30% chance of rain which could have a little ice early tuesday morning. really cold. another shot of significantly colder weather comes in on wednesday. wednesday's high temperature is below freezing with wind chills down near zero for much of the day on wednesday. that could lead to another little chance of some winter weather thursday afternoon.
