weather alert. and it's a call no firefight ever wants to get after a tragic crash local first responders desperately try to save the life of one of their own. news 4 begins now with storm team 4. >> all that snow you saw today could make things dicey tonight and tomorrow. good evening. it's a weather alert day as we watch for a treacherous refreeze. we have the big concerns for tonight and tomorrow morning. i presume this all has to do with the temperatures. right? >> yes. the temperatures are dropping as we head through the overnight hours. not only that, but while road temperatures were above freezing earlier this morning, they're down into the upper twenties right now. let's dive in. we're changing our focus. 32 degrees in washington d.c. but take a look around the mro

and the temperatures are going to continue to drop as we head through the overnight. here's a look at the headlines. we'll be breaking down the freezing conditions. i'll let you know how long the threat is going to last as we head into phase two of our weekend winter weather. and i'll review how much snow we got. we'll take a look at in. >> thank you. some of the heavier bands of snow hit southern maryland. some folks decided to make the most of it outdoors or at local businesses. news 4 traveled down to st. mary's county. we stopped in at the bay mart convenience store and deli. one man said he was surprised with all we got. >> i haven't seen snow in 12 years. i come to visit and it starts snowing in alabama. >> 4 to 6 inches in st. mary. i want to show you a live back on i 95 and spring

really quiet. we're glad you're at home safe and watching us tonight. police responded to more than 200 crashes today. that number dropped significantly as the day wore on. and the energy company is reporting a little over 12,000 customers were without power tonight. we weren't the only ones slammed with snow. part of western north carolina were buried more than 14 inches. the storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers. high winds tonight would make the situation worse. folks in the big apple, close to 6 inches of snow. six flags in new jersey was set to break the world record for the biggest snowfall fight over. the park had to close because of the snow storm. we will always do our best to keep you ahead of the storm on air and online. our nbc washington app has everything you need on the storm team four weather alert. and we'll check

10 minutes. a decorated member of maryland's fire office and a veteran of the fbi are being remembered for the extraordinary lives they led in service of others. tonight a solemn procession through the streets of rockville as police officers and firefighters escort lieutenant sander cohen's body to the funeral home. on i 270 he stopped to help a driver involved in a crash. that driver turned out to be a fbi special agent carlos wolff. both died after another vehicle hit them. we have more on the fallen he s heros. >> reporte >> reporter: lieutenant sander cohen, 33 years old, and a firefighter who had been volunteering since he was just 16. a man who never hesitated to help others? >> we'll miss him. the shock and the

haven't abated yet. >> reporter: last night he came across an fbi agent who crashed and he pulled over to help. he and that agent, 36-year-old carlos wolff were hit by a car. >> found him in the road and started cpr and breathing forhim. and unfortunately she recognized him, and it was very traumatic for her and the shifts. >> reporter: tonight a long procession of fire trucks making the hour-long drive from baltimore carrying their fallen fighter home one last time. >> i don't think there was a dry eye in this house or anywhere in rockville. people stopped on the corner and stood straight. people saluted. cars pulled over. people came out of restaurants. it was very touching. >> black ribbons draping the trucks to honor

lieutenant cohen. we'll miss him dearly here, and we're saddened. >> it's going to take us a long time to get over such a loss of such a young man. >> reporter: the firefighters here in rockville say they're determined to carry on cohen's legacy of helping others. in rockville, amy, news 4. tonight we are learning more about these fallen heros. department chief sander cohen supervised fire investigation in carol, hartford, and cecil county. he and special agent carlos wolff had only been on the shoulder for a few minutes before they were hit by the car. >> they never hesitated to act last night. sander cohen stopped and helped someone in need. >> reporter: during his career, cohen received multiple commendations for service and heroism. the fbi washing

today offering condolences to family and friends of carlos wolff. the veteran agent worked at fbi head quarters in northwest d.c. >> the loss will be felt by the entire fbi family. in our thoughts and prayers are with the wolff family and friends. >> this is an extremely sad day for all of us who protect and serve the community. please pray for the law enforcement community in maryland. >> the maryland state police crash team is investigating all three crashes involved in last night's incidents. days after president trump declared jerusalem the capital of israel, protests turned violent today. it is day three of the clashes. israeli riot police on horse back. funeral for two militants killed by israeli war planes.

after rockets were fired into israel. iraq says it's hit a major milestone in the fight against the islamic state. the iraqi prime minister announcing today they have defeated isis. they declared the war against the islamic state over. a state department spokesperson said the u.s. congratulates the iraqi people and their security forces who gave their lives fighting the terrorists but the statement goes onto say this does not mean the fight against terrorism is over. >> a plane falls from the sky in california and crash lands in a ball of flames in somebody's backyard and not everybody made it out okay. and the catholic church reveals its next move after a bit of a legal setbackn the fight i ( ♪ ) when it comes to holiday shopping, my wife loves style, my son is all about technology and my daughter? she just loves horses.

zblancht deadly aftermath after a small plane crashed into the backyard of a home in san diego. the crash killed two people. people in the neighborhood posted video on this charred remains are all that's left from the burned out home tonight. investigators are not saying if the people were in the plane or inside the home. and it's unclear at this point what caused that crash in the first place. the catholic church wants to put christmas ads on the side of metro buses but it's not going to happen at least for now. this is the ad the arch die seize wants to place on metro. the church filed an emergency injunction that would have required them to put the ads up. metro has a policy of not showing ads by

political groups. this week a judge ruled in metro's favor. the archdiocese says it violates the right to free speech and they'll continue to fight. >> in prince george's county, a fire ripped through three homes in capital heights. fire investigators are trying to figure out how the fire on dylan court started. it cost about 200,0$200,000 in damage. the red cross is doing everything it can to try to help. >> president trump makes his

here's a look at future cast. 1:00 a.m. notice how we're dry at this point. all the snow is pushed north and east. looking back west, that is not going to be impacting us. that's going to stay back toward areas west of the blue ridge. they are still under a winter weather advisory right now. for the rest of us, not only do we dry out, but we also clear out. we're losing clouds. the temperatures are really going to begin to fall. then we head into sunday afternoon. you see plenty of sunshine. but is it doing much of anything? temperatures feeling like the teens, right now current temperatures 32 in washington d.c. we're at 20s already in some surrounding areas and continuing to fall overnight. leesburg 28. manassas, 28 degrees. overnight, 20s. the snow wraps up and pulls out. we can start to get gusts starting to kick up. 20 miles per hour gusts over night, and tomorrow gusts
