this nation. >> reporter: in her first broadcast interview since revealing to the "washington post" she and senate candidate roy moore dated when she was a teenager debbie gibson tells nbc news she thinks president trump's recent endorsement is misguided. >> there is a man who is willing to sell his soul for political gain. >> reporter: gibson says she met moore when he spoke at her high school in 1981 when she was 17, which is over the age of consent in alabama. she says the then 34-year-old moore dated her for two and a half months but in hindsight -- >> it's not appropriate. it's just creeper. and i did not have that sense at the time. >> reporter: she does not allege he assaulted her and says any kissing between the two was consensual, but she says moore lied when he said this -- >> specifically i do not know any of these women. >> reporter: she claims this is his signature in her memory book and that he absolutely knows her. >> i would encourage people, however, to askem

alexander at the white house for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this morning president trump's team tells me they're confident they're nearing a victory on their push for a tax cuts bill. the president this week is expected to deliver what one aide described to me as his closing argument, a final pitch as congress closes in on a vote. president trump back at the white house gearing up for a crucial week on taxes, selling the plan on twitter despite criticism it benefits the wealthy more than the middle class. arguing the bill is shaping up even better than projected. still as republicans try to iron out differences between the house and senate versions they're getting an earful from opponents. arizona senator jeff flake flying home last week confronted by an activist who suffers from lou gehrig's disease, concerned the bill could lead to cuts. >> i need you to make your vote match your principles and for

be proud if you vote this bill down. >> reporter: new this morning on the russia investigation nbc news has learned robert mueller is zeroing in on what happened inside the white house. during a critical 18-day period this year beginning when senior officials were told then national security adviser michael flynn was susceptible to blackmail by russia and ending the day president trump fired flynn. two people familiar with mueller's inquiry say investigators have asked multiple witnesses including white house counsel don mcgann to walk it them through that stretch in detail. some interviewed believe the special counsels's goal is to figure out when president trump first learned flynn lied to the fbi. all this as the president ratchets up his war on the news media, calling it a stain on america after several news organizations issued corrections to recent reports on the president. mr. trump tweeting that a "washington post" reporter should be fired even after that reporter apologized and

about the crowd size at the president's weekend rally in florida. critics pouncing, accusing president trump of being a hypocrite noting his long record of making false and misleading claims without apologizing or correcting himself. more than 1600 since taking office according to a "washington post" study. and now "the new york times" is pulling back the curtain on life inside the white house. interviewing 60 sources reporting the president spends at least four hours a day and sometimes as much as twice that in front of a television and kwenchs his thirst drinking up to a dozen diet cokes each day. >> a lot of insight into the president's behavior. before taking office mr. trump told top aides to think of each presidential day as an episode in a tv show in which he strange wishes his rivals. also on this busy monday morning those massive wildfires in california are leading to new

over night the thomas fire the fifth largest in the state's history growing even larger. kristen dahlgren has the latest from out west. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. yeah, just incredible to see every hillside here along the coast on fire. take a look and you can see it closer up. fire officials say the topography here makes this so dangerous. they are worried about that fire raging down these hillsides into these populated areas. that's why now 30,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. this morning california's coast in flames. santa barbara county full of fast moving inferno. >> this fire has i8iosified every single day. the first night it burned five miles in less than three hours and it's continuing to do that. >> reporter: nearly 6,000 firefighters are battling the thomas fire, the region's largest blaze. are working their seventh day

co fire in the midst of erratic winds filled with flying embers. the firefighters gather here, one in the truck has been injured they are trying to treat him. this is where they're trying to make a stand. >> it's three-quarters of a mile >> reporter: parts of carpet rea and month seed dough under mandatory evacuation, the area homes to celebrities like oprah winfrey and rob lowe. ellen degeneres tweeting we just had to evacuate our pets. i'm praying for everyone in our community and thankful to ail the incredible firefighters. further south in san diego county the liloc fire has destroyed at least 180 structures. at the san louie ray downs equine training center tragedy, 46 horses perished in the flames, two trainers were burned trying to save them, including martin block now in critical condition with second and

her body. >> these individuals just -- the horses are their life and they wanted to remain with their horses as long as they could. >> reporter: down in san diego they've actually allowed people to go back home, but here they've lost ground against this fire containment now down to 10%. they say right now it's just too hot to get up into those hills where the flames are, so what their plan is to be down by the homes ringing them and trying to save them, guys. >> we will be covering this for a long time. thank you. now to florida and the investigation into a deadly police shooting there. this morning newly released video is showing the tense moments that led up to it. nbc's kerry sanders now in lauderdale lakes with that story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the sheriff here in broward county moved quickly to release the video that caught this deadly shooting. it caught the violence as well as the gunfire. we should warn you, the visuals

are disturbing. a man assaulting a florida sheriff's deputy just moments before being fatally shot. recorded by police body cameras, surveillance video and eyewitness cell phones. the confrontation happening at this florida apartment complex after sheriff's deputy sean young ward responded to a disturbance call. as he enters one of the apartments the suspect john pedro pierre comes to the door and exchanges words with the deputy. >> what did you say? what did you say? >> say it again in say it again. >> and things quickly become heated. >> pierre who was unarmed chases the officer down the hallway taking swipes as deputy young ward calls for backup and then fires his taser. >> what is wrong with you? >> but it had little impact and pierre once again charges the officer. >> stand

but the suspect punches him and the deputy falls to the ground, now on his back youngwood is kicked multiple times. >> turn his leg loose, dog. >> from above neighbors recording the clash tried desperately to convince the 42-year-old suspect to back off. >> let him go, bro. >> reporter: moments later another deputy steven briggs arrives on the scene. >> get your hands off him now. >> ignoring verbal commands pierre staggers towards the second officer then three shots ring out. pierre later died at a nearby hospital now detectives say an investigation is under way. a grand jury will determine whether the shooting was justified. >> deputy briggs exited his vehicle and he gave several clear concise lawful and legal orders to mr. pierre. mr. pierre chose a path of noncompliance. >> reporter: but some members of pier

lake-effect snow, it's dying down, but the good news is we are going to see more snow coming. if you are a big snow fan, like a white christmas, 12 million people under some sort of winter storm advisory, winter storm watch from the great lakes into new england. we will have this clipper late this afternoon into this evening, madison, new england will see light snow tonight, cleveland pittsburgh tomorrow morning then this exits pretty quickly. the snowfall amounts pretty significant. the u.p. of michigan upwards of a foot of snow. cleveland, buffalo, anywhere from 9 to 12 inches of snow, syracuse to burlington maybe a foot or more. heavy snow also in northern new england. we will get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

this is an nbc news special report. here's savannah guthrie. >> good morning, everybody. we have breaking news this morning that's happening here in new york city. police are responding to an explosion of some sort that's happened in midtown manhattan near the port authority bus terminal. this is a major point of departure subway area. the subway trains are being evacuated as a precaution right now we want to get with nbc's tom winter. good morning to you. what are your sources telling you? >> savannah, this is early in the investigation. we don't know how powerful or how large the explosion was. we don't know

sort of natural gas explosion or some sort of an intentional act. we know this incident has prompted a significant response from the nypd and the fire department here in new york. we know that the nypd has dispatched its bomb squad, which is usually standard practice in this incident. some preliminary information is this may have been a lone actor that may have been involved in this. they have somebody that they're looking to talk to right now. and so, whether or not that person turns out to be just somebody who gets tied up in this or whether or not it turns out this is some sort of an intentional incident, that's something that's very much under investigation. but as you said, we do have an explosion at 42nd and 8th avenue. >> we're looking, right now, tom, at images that are coming to us. we see a massive police response as you described. the police say many ambulances have been requested. but as you mentioned, we don't know if
