what should you get the foodie in your life, what will not only wow them but get to your door in time for the holidays. >> announcer: news4 starts now first at 4:00. >> temperatures have brooklyn plunging in the area. couple that with dangerous wind chills. a day that started out in the 40s ending up feeling like we're in the teens. >> but first we have some breaking news in the district. a little girl found wandering in the cold in northeast d.c., this is her picture. police want you to know -- want to know if you recognize her. they say she was found this morning along chill um place. she is between the ages of 2 and 3. she was wearing a leopard print coat, pink sweatpants and gray and pink shoes. police say they are still trying to find her parents. they plan on holding a news conference in the next 30 minutes and news4's shoi

we will bring you updates on air and nbc washington app. >> that investigation is going to be unfolding. what is going to be a bitterly cold night here in the dmv. >> storm team4 has been telling you about this dramatic temperature drop for days and has issued a weather alert. >> we are working for you with team coverage. our david culver laz some last-minute tips to make sure you and your car are ready. first let's head to the storm center where doug and amelia start us off this afternoon. doug? >> yeah, guys, you mentioned bitter blast. that is exactly what we have out there. this morning you walk outside maybe around noon, get some lunch, it wasn't that bad. you were just out there a minute ago. it is really dropping fast. >> yeah, the cold is really moving in quickly. in fact, we are also seeing the winds pickup. now seeing gusts in frederick almost close to 40 miles an hour. the coldest air so far this season. >> by far. take a look at what else we have going on here. a little bit of moisture, some rain, some snow showers, that is all they are. not going to amount to anything. we are seeing sprinkles parts of northern virginia,

back towards the blue ridge reported a little earlier, coming down good at times. they may even come through the district over the next hour or so as the cold air -- you can see it, it is just racing on in here. take a look at these numbers. these are the current wind chill around our region. when i say around our region, the mid-atlantic. still sitting at 39 d.c., 26 hakz, 8 in pittsburgh, morgan town, west virginia. you see the cold air moving in so we are in for a cold night tonight. turning much colder, wind chills will be in the teens tonight. right on into early tomorrow morning they could be in the single digits. i'm going to have an update on your snow chances, a little change in the forecast. update on that. more on that in a few minutes. >> you got it, doug. now is your last chance to make sure your home, your car and your yard are winter ready. >> yes indeed. news4's david culver in virginia with a few last-minute tips for you out there. david? >> reporter: hey there, wendy and leon. we are feeling the temperature drop as doug was forecasting. it is dropping pretty

too. you might be able to hear it around me. we're here at merit field garden center. a scenic spot, when you think of cold this is where you'd like during the season, the wreaths and the christmas trees. before we got here we spent time going around northern virginia. we caught up with fire fighters in fairfax county along the route 1 corridor. one of the things they're warning is that you not treat tomorrow as just another day. in fact, inside fire station 11, you're going to notion it notice it looks a little different than usual. they have what is a toy drive there, a giveaway for several students. more than that, they have coats, a thousand coats that they are rushing to get to these kids from nearly 80 different schools across the area. hoping to get them to them before this cold weather takes over. fire fighters there used to responding to medical emergencies, folks who have been exposed too long in this type of extreme condition and yet they say today everyone should be focused on preparing their cars with a cold weather emergency kit.

>> when situations worsen, if you get stranded somewhere and you're not prepared, if you don't have a bag with extra mittens, gloves, blankets, things like that, be ready for the elements. >> reporter: that is a kit you can start putting together tonight, right now. in fact, you saw all of those coats there. what is interesting, wendy and leon, is they had a coat giveaway about 2 1/2 months ago. they had 2,500 coats. why the other thousand? they have a greater need this year than they have seen in years past. they got calls from teachers who said that their students do not have coats preparing them for this cold weather. they are rushing now, trying to get it to them. >> we've been hearing that off and on. >> good for those teachers because they're the ones in the trenches and they can see how bad it is. good to put the word out. >> they notice it. >> yes, they do. thank you, david. >> the extreme cold is just arriving and our coverage of it just getting started. >> no matter where you are, you can get the power of storm team4 oyo

>> get to some other things breaking this hour. a crash in prince george's county that could impact your ride home. two police cruisers collided earlier this afternoon in mitchellville taking part in an investigation there. chopper4 shot this video of the scene. you're looking at it right here, this area along lots ford road, lots ford vista road. they were checked out at the hospital we are told. we didn't get any word on their condition or injuries. the road is expected to open soon. >> here in the district, a disturbing discovery. a woman's body found in a trash can this morning. police say a neighbor came across the crime scene just behind a home on 34th street in northeast d.c. that's just a few blocks off of benning road. news4's pat collins is live at the scene this afternoon where police are trying still to identify this victim. pat? >> reporter: wendy, this is where they made the div

can in the backyard of this abandoned house in river terrace. it appears to be a grisly case of murder. who could do something like this? plee police are trying to figure that out. an erie and unusual sight. police confiscating a trash can as evidence in what appears to be a case of murder. the body of a woman found in this super can this morning in the backyard of an abandoned house. they measured the can. took swabs from the can. and then put the can into an evidence truck so they could take it away for a closer look. the police chief called this a very suspicious death. homicide detectives working the

on the scene, the mayor herself showed up to walk the streets and reassure the residents of river terrace. >> we want justice for this victim. we are going to identify the victim, see if we know what the circumstances are. we certainly ask the community for any assistance they can provide in bringing justice to this family. >> reporter: police looking into the possibility the victim may be joni sharet rockingham. a 53-year-old woman missing in this area since the day before thanksgiving. mary jones was a friend of miss rockingham. in fact, she videotaped the searches she's made for her friend. mary jones at the scene where the body was discovered this morning. what kind of person could do something like this? >> a monster,

person, a person with no heart. that's all i can say, no heart. >> reporter: so far no official i.d. of the victim, no official cause of death. i'll be back at 5:00 with more. wendy, back to you. >> we will look for you then. thank you, pat. >> to national news now, it all comes down to today in alabama. right now voters are heading to the polls to choose their next senator. the entire country watching this race between republican roy moore and democrat doug jones. this race generating so much national attention because of the sexual misconduct allegations against moore. moore denies all of them and he's actually gotten support from president trump late in this campaign. still, the race is very close. jones is saying that he feels confident and if he does win, it would be the first time in decades that a democrat wins a statewide election in alabama. >> you've been following this on social media today, the fire storm caus

tweet aimed at democratic senator kirsten gillibrand after she called for president trump to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct. mr. trump called her, quote, a lightweight and wrote in his tweet that she used to come to his office, in his words, begging for campaign contribution tz, and he went on to say that she would, in his words again, do anything for them. blayne alexander live on capitol hill with the fallout from this. blayne? >> reporter: and, wendy, of course, all of this started because senator gillibrand was one of several senators calling for the president to resign in the wake of previous accusers coming forward. now, keep in mind, these are not new sexual misconduct allegations against the president. but what's different is the response and the climate. now more and more members of congress are willing to step in. the calls for an investigation growing louder. >> mr. president, you

live under a different set of rules. >> reporter: more than 100 democrats saying it's time for congress to look into sexual misconduct allegations against president trump who engaged in a bitter twitter exchange with senator kirsten gillibrand, one of at least six senators calling for his resignation. president trump saying gillibrand begged him for campaign contributions. and, quote, would do anything for them. words taken by many as sexually suggestive. >> it was a sexist smear, attempting to silence my voice, and i will not be silenced on this issue. >> reporter: fellow democrats rushing to her defense. >> it is grotesque. it took my breath away. and it represents the conduct of a person who is ill equipped to be the president of the united states. >> reporter: the white house firing back. >> he's not alleging anything. he's talking about the way that our system functions as it is, that politicianse

>> thank you, susan. >> all right. what kind of food did we prepare for the manitoba mirader? >> maller. >> maller, neither one is good. >> i know. with the alberta clipper a lot of times we're able to get a little snow from it. that comes from manitoba. it doesn't matter. it's going to get cold is what's going to happen. it's already coming down. temperatures are tumbling and they are tumbling fast. take a look outside right now. we have snow showers in parts of the area some sprinkles, too. nothing right now around parts of northwest, looking at parts of montgomery county. current temperature 45. winds out of the northwest at 14. winds gusting, take a look at these winds, gusting upwards of 30 to 40 miles per hour. current wind gusts winchester 37. 38 in manassas. we saw some snow showers in winchester, snow at dulles airport. we just reported that. that area is coming into d.c. now. we could see flurries or flakes around town.

gaithersburg, 20 in winchester and these numbers will continue to come down over the next couple of hours. if you have plans to be out, make sure you bundle up. look at the moisture making its way in here. most of this falling just as some shower activity. waldorf towards leonard town, fredericksburg, could be mixtion with snow. you can see on the backside of the culpepper area. heads up if you're down around the fredericksburg area, this is not heavy at all. not anticipating issues with this. biggest issues coming with the cold. you can actually see it coming right out of canada. follow this air right across the great lakes right into our region. extremely cold air. coldest air we've seen so far this season. and that's the way it's going to be during the day tomorrow. let's continue to time this out for you as far as wind chill is concerned tonight. here we are at 4:00. notice by 7:00, the wind chill, 20 in d.c., 14 leesburg, 16 culpepper, right now looks like 13 in frederick by the

the single digits in many locations. 9 leesburg, 12 in washington. waking up to an incredibly frigid wednesday. feeling bad for the kids at the bus stop, anybody up walking around outdoors. this is 19. 1 ce 1:00 in the afternoon, you can see how long the frigid air will stick around. temperature tomorrow may get just above freezing in the city, but most of you stay in the upper 20s to low 30s. 32 degrees windy and cold. wind chills near 20 all day bupd l up. we're talking coats, hats, gloves, scarves, whatever you have. thermals, the boots, two pairs of socks. i don't know, whatever else you got there. you're going to need it tomorrow. probably into the day on thursday, too. thursday a high of 42, but still rather breezy. so wind chills on thursday will be in the upper 20s to low 30s. it stays cold on friday. we have a system moving through on friday. still not expecting much from it and really i think the chances for snow off the four day

afternoon. you could literally feel the temperature going down. >> we talked about that. it wouldn't be too bad until the noon hour. by 1:00 you saw winds kick up. now that the winds have kicked up, that is the cold wind coming in. it already feels 10 to 20 degrees colder than when we were outside four hours ago. take a look at what's happening outside. what we have here is the temperatures we're going to be watching. the current wind chills. 32 degrees in d.c., but notice by around 7:00 tonight, going from 32 to 14 by 8:00, too, in pittsburgh you can see the cold air continuing to race in. by 11:00 we're down to 10:00, by early tomorrow morning the wind chill around 7 degrees in the city. so, that's quite amazing as far as the cold air temperatures are going to continue. we are going to see extremely cold air right on through the day tomorrow. something else we're watching, there are snow showers out here with this system. you can sooe down to the soigt even sleet mixed in with the fredericksburg area into southern maryland. this is not heavy pry sip tags. you can see

between brook land and fort totten. this weekend, there will be no service between silver spring and rhode island avenue stations. metro says if the new cable installation goes as planned, normal red line service, may, may be restored by next monday. now to the showdown in bama, as it's been called. voters deciding whether republican roy moore or democrat doug jones will be filling the seat left vacant by jeff sessions in the senate. moore rode his horse to the polls this morning. doug jones greeted by a crowd of supporters as he cast his ballot. who wins? still anybody's guess. jay gray is in montgomery, alabama, with how things are being looing at the polls so far today. jay? >> reporter: wendy, officials say the turn outs has been strong across the state all day. both sides believe they have turned out their base. now the only thing left for the

this campaign across the country is to wait for the results here. it's an election day tradition for roy moore. but the republican senate hopeful rides to the ballot box today saddled with allegations of sexual misconduct decades ago with teenage girls. moore has denied the allegations and today refused to discuss them. >> we're done with that. get back to the issues in this case. >> reporter: it is the issues that democrat doug jones says define the choices in this race. >> alabama is at a crossroads. we are going to put our best foot forward. >> reporter: turnout has been brisk across the state. >> it is an important ballot election, in our country in general. >> reporter: and the nation has been watching. politicians and celebrities weighing in during the race. president trump and former president obama recording campaign robocalls. but now the only voice that matters belongs to voters. many who say they're sick of the allegations and attention. >> this makes alabama lookli

buried at arlington national cemetery will receive that wreath. maybe you've seen them as you're driving down the gw parkway this time of year. people often think it is a government program but it's not. it is privately funded, donor, you know, accepted campaign that happens. >> almost a quarter of a million grave stones they're going to be putting these wreaths on, how many people are needed to do that and can you be one of those people? >> yes, somewhere in the 10,000 plus people will show up on saturday and they can be a we can be a you can be us. last few years on 94.7 fresh fm, my day job, we have put together a group to come out and volunteer. we had about 200 volunteers join us last year. if anyone on the news4 family or anybody watching wants to be part of this, we have it all figured out logistically because it is a lot of humans. we gather at the mall in pentagon city and we walk over and we're responsible for covering -- this is section 64. >> look how beautiful that is. i love that video with all the wreaths on those graves.

custody after a hit and run. police say a driver crashed near sully road and frying pan road not far from dulles airport. the driver ran from the scene and police launched a manhunt which shut down the southbound lanes of route 28. we are told the suspect was just caught on airport property. we are working for more details and we will bring you an update. but here is a picture of what it looks like right now. >> we want to show you the latest push in support of the so-called dream act. you're seeing here this giant television screen that is going to be set up on the national mall. it is there now, it will be there the next few weeks. it faces the u.s. capital and it is going to be airing messages 24 hours a day urging lawmakers to pass the dream act before the end of the year. that is legislation that would protect thousands of undocumented young people from deportation. so-called dacas. stories about some of those young immigrants known as dreamers are also going to be featured on the jumbo screen. >> a bullied little

fredericksburg we have snow mixing in with sleet and rain towards parts of southern maryland this will change to snow before it moves out. it is not going to produce any issues. the big deal is the cold and especially what you wake up to tomorrow morning. amelia has more on that. >> yeah, tomorrow around 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 a.m. will be the coldest period. when you factor in the wind with the temperature, this is how you determine the feels like temperature. 7:00 a.m., it is brutal out there. keep this in mind for kiddos tomorrow morning. 7 in frederick, 11 in fredericksburg. the checklist tomorrow morning is everything. not just the warm jacket, but the hats, the gloves, the scarf as well, and there is little relief as we head through the day. take a look, 24 degrees at the bus stop. when you factor in those windy conditions it's feeling like we're in the single digits and low teens. at recess potentially indoors because we're only going to be around 28 degrees. taking the picking the kids up from school still breezy.

storm center. how is it looking? >> i see david culver. hope he brought a couple extra layers. that's what it is today. you probably left this morning, you didn't need a whole lot as far as the coat, the gloves, the hats go. as you go throughout the day and the rest of the evening hours, you're going to be putting on more if you are planning on being outside. take a look at what we've got. we have a storm system coming through the area now. it is producing some moisture in our region. some shower activity mixing with some sleet and some snow, some rain showers as well down into the sougts. fredericksburg over towards southern maryland, montgomery county. the district seeing flurries, winchester area, too. this is all cold air coming in across our area now. and look at the numbers. these are the current wind chills. 32 in d.c., 17 now in hagerstown. 6 in pittsburgh. the cold air will continue to move on in here and these numbers will become these numbers by the time you wake up early tomorrow morning. turning much colder wind chills in the teens in the
