you're watching news4 midday. waiting on the platform in the cold is absolutely miserable. and some of you need to prepare to wait even longer. >> news4 transportation reporter adam tuss explains the important fix crews are doing to the red line and how long those delays will last. >> reporter: crowded on the platforms of the red line today as people have to wait for delays. now the issue has to do with communication cable. a 40-year-old cable that was discovered by metro. this is faulty cable. and what that cable actually does is pinpoint the location of trains. so you can see why this would be so important in something that metro wants to take care of. now, what does it mean for riders? well, specifically it means there can only be one train on each track between brooklyn, fort, and ta coma. that will show things down. entire red line twans will

this has been on the metro long-term list of priorities for several years. tomorrow the metro board is to back a p cages to the northern virginia transportation authority for $2 million to look at capacity issues in that area. now to the latest on new toll along 66. despite what many are dweeting, v do the says they are working. and the first four days of tolling, commutes were not only faster, but were more reliable, they say. you'll recall tolls piqued at 40 bucks, and many motorists they called it highway robbery. vdot says the average high is closer $10 per ride. a local group is doing its part to spread holiday cheer. the nonprofit ha don't a soldier group wants to send letters and needs help your season. as molette green tells us helping out is easy.

to handle the stress is sarah from the jewish federation of greater washington. thank you for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> so tell mia little bit, what is your best advice to interfaith families during the holidays? because it is hard. it's not just going house to how but getting your kids to understand both in a good way. >> right. so one of the things that we recommend at the jewish federation of greater washington is to have a conversation with your partner before you talk tour kids, that way of two of you on the same page, united front. i also think you should talk tour partner before you talk to your parents and their parents as well. so that you can make sure that they know that you are trying to respect their traditions to carry on to the next generation. >> should families celebrate both holidays and try and get these kids to learn a little bit about each or hopefully a lot about each? >> that's going to depend on the family. and that's one of the things that we recommend is the feat

those conversations and figure out where, what's important to you, and where you can either make compromises or come to common ground with that. one of the things that we recommend is to make sure that grandparents feel respected along those lines as well. and one of the things they worry about is whether or not their traditions and culture will be passed onto their grandchildren. they want to have that legacy. so we recommend being able to share as much of that as possible. but what you might do is we sell brat this holiday inn our home, then we go to grandma's house to celebrate the other holiday. so whichever one is primary in your home you can do that way. in our home we actually do both. my family comes to us for christmas. and we have a christmas tree. but we also light the hanukkah candles every night. make sure they are not next to each other. >> tell me what you have here real quickly. >> sure. so we have some crafts here, things you can do with your kids. one of the things we have found is that boys tend to talk moran

>> reporter: this experimental helicopter could revolutionize the way u.s. troops are resupplied on the battlefield. and it could save lives by flying unmanned into a war zone. this marine helicopter of capable of fully autonomous flight which means it can land in a combat zone, resupply troops, keeping pilots out of harms way. >> much easier to look at a machine as expendable, we certainly don't look at our marines that way. >> reporter: this is an old helicopter that flu in the vietnam war, but now it's equipped with a high tech auto pilot system. the helicopter flight is controlled by a marine on the ground using a tablet. he says it's easy. >> like ordering a pizza. that simple. >> reporter: sergeant says he dsn
