news 4. all right. the good news. you can be happy about this -- we have a storm team weather alert day. >> we may see snow. we'll help you get ready this morning. it could be tricky this afternoon. it's cold outside. the roads are dry for now. the scene could change depending where you live and where you might be headed this weekend. >> our meteorologist sheena parveen is here with a look at the timing and who could see the most snow. not a big snow adventure. >> no, not at all. you hear us talk about the clipper systems. sometimes they can be a nuisance. but this one isn't really going to develop until it gets right over us as it brings in moisture from the atlantic. weather alert for the d.c. metro area and maryland. notice how we haven't included much of virginia at all. after noon today we expect the s

areas. low visibility briefly with roads mainly wet. temperatures will start to drop at the time of the snowfall. those treated roads should be mostly fine. temperatures right now, though, we have a lot of 20s on the map as you step outside. you want the warm coat. the winter weather advisories up for the district and also maryland. take a look at future weather going through time. lunchtime, not too much happening. 3:00 p.m., look at that. snowfall around d.c. all the way up to new york. we'll take a closer look at what to expect where you live straight ahead. as far as your friday morning commute, how is it looking melissa? >> looking pretty good. bw parkway at the beltway, headlights are out of the loop. everything rolling along fine this morning. inbound 66. the ramp to the outer loop again. right side blocked by a disabled vehicle. right now, 66 looking pretty good here. all things considered. northbound 301 at cedarville, the left side blocked by a crash and waldorf, 301 inbound at 5. traffic getting by to

right shoulder block bid a disabled vehicle. 95 in maryland all rolling along just fine. eun? >> thank you, melissa. the time is 6:02. a major shutdown is about to happen on the metro red line this weekend. >> it needs to replace thousands of feet of cable. >> we're joined live from the takoma station looking at why the defect is similar to one that caused a deadly crash. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. similarities and they just want to make sure they do everything that they can to make sure that people on this line are safe. that's why the emergency repairs are happening this weekend. what that means is a closure on the red line between silver spring and rhode island avenue. the "washington post" reporting that the problem that has been found is similar to the issue since the 2009 train collision that killed nine people. >> metro says that

slight chance that a train could electronically disappear from a tracking system that communicates the locations of trains. that's the situation that happened in 2009. now, the decision, therefore, has been made to shut down this stretch of the red line so that the repairs can be made quickly. look at the stations that are incompetent packeted here. we have station that is are going to close. brookland fort totten and takoma. hopefully reopening by monday. we spoke to a commuter arks rider, she's okay with the closures as long as it makes things safer. >> safe for everyone's life. make sure they get where they're going, getting to. okay. >> reporter: the repairs can be completed by the start of rush hour on monday morning. we're going to have toee

metro through this affected area, they are going to be running shuttle buses. back to you guys. >> megan mcgrath live in takoma. thanks, megan. we're following a developing story in charles county. deputies are searching for a gunman in a deadly shooting. a man was killed on holly avenue at spruce street last night. chopper 4 was over the scene as investigators collected evidence. the gunman took off in a dark-colored sedan. more than a fixer upper here. look at the damage a car did outside the warner theater. a dapt of public works van that was parked in front of the theater rolled and crashed into the stairs there. we know that one woman was hurt. she should be okay. we have breaking news on the wildfires burning out west. meagan fitzgerald at the live desk with new evacuation orders. meagan? >> just coming into the newsroom, as you said, mandatory evacuation orders are being issued in san

county near the los padres forest. this adds to the thousands who have been forced to flee their homes. meanwhile, firefighters are desperately trying to battle this unrelenting thomas fire which continues to rage in southern california. fire officials are saying 238,000 acres along with hundreds of homes have already burned. the fire is still only 30% contained. it's been burning for 11 days and expected to continue. there's continued heartbreak in southern california where these wildfires continue to rage out of control. a san diego firefighter was killed trying to fight the thomas fire. that fire is among the largest ever recorded in the state. yesterday engineer cory iverson's body was taken in a procession to the co

he was killed in the line of duty. his fellow firefighters lined a freeway overpass and stood on top of vehicles to salute him. those who knew iverson say they're devastated. >> this is a tragic event. it is a reminder of the inherent dangers that we face here in california with wildfires. the risk you take in the fire service. >> iverson leaves behind a pregnant wife and a 2-year-old daught daughter. he was 32 years old. a woman facing murder charges after police say she admitted to shaking her newborn daughter and throwing her on a bed. the 2-month-old little girl died three days later. she called 9-1-1 in february and said her daughter was unresponsive. the baby apparently died from blunt force injuries. investigators say she confessed to abusing the baby. she was arrested yesterday. new and disturbing details about the d.c. school aide charged with voyeurism. the

school in greater washington. she posted a video on snapchat on december 1st. court documents say the video shows aides trying to change the diaper of a 13-year-old girl who has multiple disabilities and acog any tiff level of an 11-month-old. she shade she made the video to document her stressful day and titled it want to go home. she also felt remorse after watching the video late they're day. the d.c. council will hold a public hearing on the graduation scandal that rocked ballou high school. educators, parents and students will be able to voice concerns about what happened. an investigation revealed dozens of students graduated last june when they shouldn't have. mayor bowser launched an investigation into the allegations. 7 minutes after the hour right now. the gop is scrambling to knock down enough republican votes to pass the massive tax plan before christmas. >> senator marco rubio is

officers in tactical geear at te courthouse and shoppers overhead. fields faces 40 years in prison if convicted. let them go! >> today the trial of six people accused of rioting on president trump's inauguration day is set to go to the jury. they're the first of more than 200 people facing charges. you may remember these scenes that played out in downtown d.c. in january. because many of the protesters were wearing masks, the defense attorneys argue it's hard to prove their clients are the ones causing the damage. each faces decades in prison if convicted on all charges. the latest member to exit the trump administration isn't going quietly. omarosa manigault newman sat down to explain why she resigned. she was the only african-american woman in the senior staff of the white house. one thing she said during the interview was that she's troubled by president trump's handling of the violence in

them, we had to buy toys for them. >> that tradition of help continues this saturday at howard university hospital's 25th annual child and family celebration for at-risk kids. >> the program has evolved into the border babies prevention program. we know the nurses are the behind the scenes heroes who do so much of that tough work. >> they're the ones that, when you're in pain, you call a nurse. >> they don't get as much credit. hats off to all the nurses. >> there is a new push in prince william county to sign people up in the pulse point app. this is a service proven to save lives. the app links a network of people who know cpr and alerts them when there is an emergency nearby. often the ordinary citizens arrive on scene before the paramedics. pulse point is already used in the district. prince george's county and other local communities to find out how to register for

the door, a lot of spots in the 20s. everyone is at or below freezing. dulles 27. clinton right now 30 degrees. the forecast for the snow, noon to 4:00 p.m., the general time frame for any accumulation. about a half an inch to an inch through the d.c. metro and maryland as you get closer to philadelphia and new jersey. future weather, we go through lunchtime, still not too much happening. temperatures, though, around freezing. then quickly we see the snow developing, mainly around the district and north and east of that. then it quickly moves away. this is one of those nuisance clipper-type systems. if you're walking the dog, watch out for that. find out how to adopt pete. by noon again, flurries developing. by 4:00 p.m., you might be walking the dog in the snow, especially in maryland. big improvements on the weekend. back in the 40s. by monday, 54 degrees. then rain moving in on tuesday. ok

while they were working on a movie. the claims are not confirmed. hoffman's lawyer denied the accusations. two powerful african-american men in media facing sexual misconduct allegations. >> russell simmons and pbs talk show host tavis smiley are publicly firing back. in the l.a. times and new york times, nine more women accused the men of vulgar language, assault and rape. the he stepped back from running his empire after two others accused him of rape. simmons is going to share evidence of his innocence. tavis smiley is aggressively defending himself in a facebook video. >> the question is whether or not there is too much now blurring of the lines. we don't want to find the real offenders, the aggressive rapists are blurring into these other guys. >> pbs has hired an outside law

the first 4 traffic. we begin with the forecast for that snow. chuck and sheena, they're working on this. it's still a few hours out, right? >> not until after lunchtime. but the good news is, it's not for everybody today. >> absolutely right. not looking for a lot of snow. snow lovers, really just want it so bad, know that -- >> not today. >> not today. not going to add up to too much. maybe an inch of snow. that's about all we're following here. the timing of it is the reason we're a little concerned. noon to 6:00. just in that pre-evening commute rush hour time frame is when we might get the snow at the heaviest. it's half an inch to an inch. heaviest for a brief period of time. we'll keep a close eye on this. the winter weather advisory is mainly for the maryland side of the potomac. it includes the district and arlington. this is mostly a maryland threat more so than a virginia threat. snowfall amounts will be light. half an inch to an

>> this morning, more than three dozen are temporarily homeless after a fire ripped through their apartment building. the residents in lanham rushed to help each other get out safely. we talked to a neighbor who helped another get out in a wheelchair. >> i seen him. let me help him out, get him out of the building. >> my gentleman and the fire people helped me to rescue him. i put him in ambulance. >> nothing special. just something anybody would do. >> the good news here is that no one was hurt in that fire. we are following breaking news. a lot of folks without water. d.c. water officials say the water main break on newton street in northeast between 22nd and 24th street, this is impacting about 40 homes. we understand that crews are working right now to fix this. it should take about six to eight hours to be restored. back to you. >> meagan being

a public hearing on the graduation scandal at ballou high school. >> dozens of students graduated last june when they shouldn't have. aimee cho has more on what educators and parents hope to achieve today. >> reporter: the d.c. council will hold that hearing at 10:00 a.m. to try to get to the bottom of this scandal. now, it all started back in the spring when every senior at ballou high -- some teachers there say many of the students shouldn't have graduated at all. an investigation found that many students were allowed to graduate even though they skipped three months of classes, failed required classes and didn't perform community service. of the 164 seniors at ballou high, ohm a third of them should have graduated according to that investigation. for comparison, the previous two years, only about half of ballou seniors were able to graduate. some

they felt pressure to pass the students along and graduate them anyway. one teacher said that school officials told her to change a student's grade from an f to a d so he could pass. we've seen a lot of fallout from the scandal. the principal at ballou has been reassigned. d.c. mayor muriel bowser called for an investigation and at the hearing today, they will be listening to students, teachers and parents to try and figure out what actually happened at that school. eun, aaron? >> aimee cho live for us outside the wilson building in downtown d.c. thanks. a former student is taking the reins as the new superintendent of alexandria city public schools. the school board selected dr. gregory hutchings jr. as the next top educator. he graduated in 1995 at tc williams. he spent the past five years as a superintendent at shaker high schools out of cleveland. among his priorities, closing the achievement gap, making sure k
