of days. and a father's forgiveness. talking to news 4 about the friend who accidentry shot his 11-year-old son. >> i could lose both a friend and my son at the same time. >> news 4 at 11:00 starts now. well, tonight's snow didn't last long. in and out in a matter of hours but it did create some slick spots on our untreated roadways and especially the sidewalks as the temperatures continue to plummet tonight. let's check in first with chief meteorologist doug kammerer with more on what we can expect heading into saturday. how about it, doug? >> encountering a lot of the slick spots myself as i made my way in, for dinner tonight. sidewalks a mess. a few areas the roads also a mess. this is why. yes, we saw snow come down earlier but it's all about the temperatures. look how far they've come down. college park now at 23. gaithersburg at 21. manassas and

the most, 17 degrees right now in manassas. so ice is going to continue to be a problem. right on through the overnight hours. now storm team 4 radar tracking a couple of snow showers up to the north. they are not going to mean a thing. this is all part of another system trying to move on through. our big system has moved out. this is just a little system that will pass to our north. can't rule out a couple of snow showers and flurries north of washington overnight tonight. tomorrow, something different moving on in here. we'll talk about that, talk about next week and christmas, now in the ten-day forecast. >> that's right. counting down. doug, thank you. the snow moved out of here pretty quickly tonight but the temperature swings this time of year can wreak havoc on our water pipes. one water main break today put a big dent in business for some restaurants and bars on "u" street. news 4's jackie bensen is live with more on that. jackie? >> reporter: jim, the water came back on ahead of schedule.

bad timing. repairs to the break in the eight-inch-diameter water main required a digup of one of the busiest stretches of sidewalk? the nation's capital. the 1300 block of "u" street northwest on a friday night. businesses on the south side of the block were without water from early afternoon through happy hour and beyond. among them, the highly acclaimed and always busy fainting goat. manager jay dee says he has compassion for the emergency situation but notes the restaurant was fully staffed for a busy friday night during the holiday season. >> we hear from some people that it's going to be, like, six hours and some people say it's four or ten. and, you know, we have commitments. it's a difficult situation because, you know, we have staff that we have to keep on and we don't know how to handle that because we're a small business. >> reporter: bar and restaurant owners had their f

estimated 10:00 p.m. deadline. d.c. water crews managed to finish earlier than expected. about 7:30, but by then a lot of people had changed their plans. >> we can't operate with no water. it definitely affects us in a way, i had to send a couple bodies to different places that do have water down the street just so we won't upset them and get them somewhere else. >> reporter: and the businessowners tell us even though the closure was only a few hours friday night, holiday season, they definitely lost money. live in northwest, jackie bensen, news 4. >> you know it. jackie, thank you. first on 4 tonight, a father is sharing his story after his 11-year-old son was shot by mistake. he tells us they have compassion for the shooter is not only a good friend, he's also a purple heart recipient. mark harry says his son, caleb, liked spending time at the home of his neighbor. two weeks ago, mark received a ca

accidentally shot caleb while he was putting his gun away. that friend quickly jumped into action and took caleb to joint andrews base hospital. >> he was traumatized because to him, they are like best friends. he's actually taking therapy for what happened because ptsd kicked in after all of this. and i couldn't lose both a friend and my son at the same time. >> caleb has had multiple surgeries, but tonight, he's on the mend at children's hospital. his road to recovery is going to be a long and very expensive one. if you're interested in helping this family, go to nbcwashington.com and search "help caleb." today we learned that high school student found dead in a wooded area in bethesda over the weekend died from a combination of alcohol poisoning, drowning, and hypothermia. officials tell us it was a tragic accident after a house party where there was underaged

4 earlier this week believes police could have done more to find his son before it was too late. the 17-year-old was a senior at walt whitman high school. republicans taking a bit of a victory lap tonight after releasing the final version of their tax bill and getting enough support to pass it. i'm leon harris at the live desk. let's take a closer look at how the plan is going to affect you and your family. this bill doubles the standard deductions. eliminates the affordable care act's individual mandate and raises the child tax credit. that last adjustment sealed the deal for senator marco rubio who went from a no to a yes today. late changes to the bill also include seven new tax brackets. the president says the plan fulfills a campaign promise. >> i think that we are going to be in a position to pass something as early as next week, which will be monumental. >> this april 15th, when you file your taxes, that is the last time youi

this monstrous broken tax code. >> many americans will enjoy a tax cut, but democrats say the bill benefits the rich at the expense of working families. critics also say the bill increases the deficit. the house could vote as early as tuesday. the senate the day after that. jim, back to you. >> leon, thank you. president trump's former campaign manager, paul manafort, put up enough property to satisfy a $10 million bond. a federal judge today says she will allow manafort to live in his florida home while he awaits trial. manafort has been confined to his home in virginia since his arrest back in october. in florida, he'll remain on gps monitoring, and have a curfew. meanwhile, president trump today let off some steam about the fbi. he called the agency disgraceful. while speaking to reporters on the white house lawn. he seemed to be referring to text messages the justice department gave congress this week in which a senior agent

as a, quote, idiot. he had this to say just minutes before heading to speak at the fbi's national academy today in quantico. >> a shame what's happened with the fbi, but we're going to rebuild the fbi. it will be bigger and better than ever. >> president also seemed to leave the door open to pardoning ousted national security adviser michael flynn but said today he's not ready to talk about that yet. flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contacts to the russian ambassador. all of this just a portion of what chuck todd plans to cover sunday on "meet the press." >> a democratic wave is building going into 2018. the question now is, how big is it going to get? the results in alabama, along with a slew of other campaigns in 2017, do show us a few things. democratic voters are fired up. republicans are not. and the president is unpopular even in red states like alabama.

online threats and images from the islamic state that featured the washington national cathedral. the fbi has been monitoring these images. it says there is no indication of an actual planned attack and the extra security we're told is a precaution. part of the red line will close this weekend so metro can finish replacing a communications cable. metro's been limiting the number of trains at the brookland, tacoma park stations this week. starting tomorrow free shuttle buses will replace the trains between the silver spring and rhode island avenue stops. metro hopes to restore full service by monday. even more changes are coming on the other end of the red line. this time so metro can waterproof parts of the system. metro has successfully tested a waterproofing method that helps keep the tunnels dry and improves reliability. so now the rail system is exp d expanding it. but that will mean single tracking on

for some stretches between friendship heights and grove until february. commuters are crying highway robbery tonight in northern virginia. today we learned those new toll lanes on i-66 hit a new record high. it's a whopper, folks. a driver snapped this photo of a $44 toll during the morning commute yesterday. only lasted a few minutes and appeared to be caused by drivers trying to escape an accident on i-395. the high prices, especially in the morning, have caused many commuters and lawmakers to call for changes, but vdot tells us the toll lanes are working as expected. and they stress that carpoolers don't have to pay a dime to use the road during rush hour. so make some friends. for kids from 1 to 92, lights are the perfect way to celebrate the holidays. coming up next on news 4 at 11:00, where to see some of the most impressive displays in our area over e

a local jury convicted a housekeeper of stealing but then took up a collection to cover the cost of her sentence. sandra men tez ortega confessed to stealing three rings from a house in fairfax city last year. jurors convicted her of a felony and she could have faced 20

instead, they gave her a $60 fine and offered to compensate her. ortega told us she was a 19-year-old mother of two who wanted to provide for her children. >> i could see in her that she was a good person. one of the female jurors pulled out a $20 bill, said, i want to help pay for her fine. >> the victim told the "washington post" that ortega never fully accepted responsibility for her crime and that she initially denied stealing the rings before giving them back. the last full weekend of the holiday shopping season is upon us, but retailers are already feeling the holiday cheer thanks to soaring sales numbers. experts tell us the biggest reason is online sales that have shot up more than 10% compared to last year. high consumer confidence has shoppers ready to spend, but if you're still looking for presents and maybe a last-minute

in the frozen variety. we saw snow, we saw grapple, talking about that over the last couple days. right now, only 26. 26. winds out of the south at 7 miles an hour. you think 26 is cold? how about this? this is where we got cloud cover. we have clouds to the north. so 32 hagerstown. 34 martinsburg. clear skies east of the blue ridge. 17 manassas and culpeper. extreme cold. we're going to have problems on through early tomorrow morning. tonight, lots of black ice. we've seen it on roadways. slick sidewalks. that's a big issue. a very cold start to the day tomorrow. warming tomorrow afternoon. that's going to be the trend as we head in toward the next couple of days. on the radar we are looking at nothing around the city, but i mentioned some clouds. also some snow showers up here toward the north up around hagersto hagerstown, frederick. don't be surprised to see snow flurries if you're letting the dog out late or taking a late-night walk in the cold. it is going to be continued cold t

now, chilly. high temperatures as i mentioned average in the mid 40s in this time of year. i think we're going to be right around there. take a look at where our flow is, though. notice out of indianapolis, out of canada, coming down around our rege. region. we're starting to see the trough of low pressure that brings the cold air starting to move off toward the east. we're going to start to warm things over the next couple days. wake-up weather, need the warm coat at 7:00 a.m. 30 degrees at 7:00 a.m. 32 by 8:00. 34 by 9:00. starting to get breezy. once again, the wind is going to be a little bit of a factor tomorrow. not as big of a factor, but breezy and cool. so even with plenty of sunshine, a high of 46, it's still going to feel like we're in the 30s for the most part out there on your saturday. so just be ready for that. now, as we move on through the afternoon, next couple of days, 49 on sunday. a late-day sprinkle as another front tries to move through. most of it is on the dry side. that helps to bring in warmer air. 54 on monday. 60 on tuesday. another system moving in. so well above average onue

here's the very bright spot for the wizards. recently, mike scott's been that guy. 12 points in the first half. uva grad. he finishes 22. wizards take a 12-point lead in the first half. that goes away. in the fourth quarter, lou williams, the same guy to hit the game-winner last saturday, connects for three more of his game high 23 and the game is tied. from there, the wizards stopped playing around. wall gives the wizards a five-point lead. then delivers the knockout. wizards go on a 15-f 3 run and win 1100-91. kirk cousins is having the worst of his three years as a starter here in washington. he's averaging about 50 yards less per game than he did last year. this is his lowest completion percentage as a starter. redskins lose one of their last three games, it will be washington's worst record with cousins calling the shots. on monday, dan patrick said that several receivers
