developing this morning, a major power outage brought the world's busiest airport to a standstill. you can literally hear the cheers the moments the lights came back on at atlanta's hartsfield jackson airport. >> the power outage came at the start of the busy travel season. passengers were stuck in the dark for 11 hours. one person described it as pandemonium. >> you can hear it there. people literally had to yell to find each other because they couldn't see. georgia power says a fire in an underground electrical facility may have caused the outage. over the next few days, it's likely to impact your holiday travel plans no matter where you're flying. >> justin finch is live with the number of delays we're seeing this morning. hey, justin? >> reporter: hey there,

[ inaudible ] >> reporter: very slow moving line. i can tell you as well this morning, i have been watching the board as well. we have flights in from atlanta due to arrive. the first at 9:00 a.m. and a couple others at 10:00 a.m. in terms of flights departing from atlanta here, we're seeing one flight so far at 7:00 a.m. [ inaudible ] a lot of people found out their flights were going to be canceled yesterday afternoon. imagine the frustration they are now feeling knowing now they may still have to wait. i did see a mother of an 8-month-old baby girl who tells me she's now completely stressed out. her child so far has held up pretty well. but you can imagine traveling with a baby on a day like today has got to be frustrating. take a listen.

delayed throughout the day. make sure you check your flight as justin said before you leave. we're expected to learn more today about a homicide in upper marlboro over the weekend. in prince george's county, a homicide across the road from six flags america had detectives busy. they spent parts of the overnight hours searching for a person who killed a man late friday night. police found the victim at a condominium complex. it's 6:04. we're following the latest on the wildfires in southern california. chris lawrence is at the live desk. chris? >> aaron, right now the thomas fire now the third largest wildfire in california's history. right now, firefighters as you see right there, firefighters, just take a look at the damage. it is continuing to spread throughout santa barbara and ventura coin. it's been two weeks since the fire bro

contained. they don't think they're going to have a funnel handle on this jl january 7th. that means a lot of kids, hundreds, thousands of them across southern california, not going to be waking up on christmas morning. >> all right, chris. thank you. the sendoff a hero deserved. they lined a procession route for cory iverson. he died last week battling the fire in ventura county. police escort drove him to san diego where he lived. iverson is survived by his pregnant wife and their 2-year-old daughter. it's now 6:05 today. deliberations are set to resume in the first trial involving inauguration day protesters. there are six defendants in this case. all were arrested january 20th. those defendants argued prosecutors are overreaching by charging each with rioting. prosecutors admittedly two

the people did not actually break windows or cause damage. they claim that because the defendants encouraged others to damage property that they too were guilty of rioting. attorneys for the defendants say this is an attack on free speech. a verdict could come as soon as today in the case. senator john mccain is home this morning. he was recently treated for a viral infection at the national cancer institute in bethesda. doctors say he is responding positively to his treatment for brain cancer. his daughter meg hahn tweeted this out on sunday. she thanked everyone for their support during this difficult time. president trump told reporters that he soak with mccain's wife and wished them well. 2008 has been long as at times. it's been very, very difficult. >> the owner of the panthers has decided to sell the team after being accused

handle this water main break. what's closed right now? between chillum manor and riggs road, the east lanes blocked and one westbound lane taking two-way traffic. molette green is on the ground for us. they're telling you it could be a while, huh? >> reporter: yeah. many, many hours this morning to get this fixed up. take a look at the scene behind me. it's quite a mess with this big hole in the ground. the wssc works to repair a 12-inch main. they say it could take hours. six to seven hours they told me about an hour ago. crews tell me only three homes impacted by this in terms of water issues. we are at east-west highway at chillum manor road. we'll go back to melissa mollet in first four traffic as we see the cars using one lane westbound there. back to you. >> thank you, molette. elsewhere, a couple of things happening. an incident in the

seeing delays there. northbound 28, just before compton road, the right lane is blocked. we are slow there headed into town. inner loop and outer loocht beltway are okay. at brown road, a crash in the northbound lane. aaron? melissa, thank you. it's 6:31 much here's a look at the top stories. expect crowded airports today as airlines recover from that massive power outage in atlanta. nearly 11-hour outage brought one of the busiest airports to a standstill. near a thousand flights were delayed or canceled. georgia power says a fire may have caused the outage. the redskins might not be going to the playoffs this year but they were happy to get a win yesterday. it happened at fedex field. the final was 22-15. >> the thomas fire is the third largest fire in california

this monstrous blaze continues to spread throughout santa barbara and ventura counties. cal fire says it's 45% contained now. adding to the heartbreak here, fire officials don't expect full containment until january 7th after the holiday season. we're learning new details about what happened moments after a little girl was shot in the district. according to a police report, the toddler and another child were playing with a gun when it accidentally went off. this happened inside an apartment on pomeroy street in southeast saturday night. the girl -- the bullet hit the girl in the leg. she's expected to be okay. no word on how they got the gun or if anyone will be charged. three people are dead after a plane went down on the way to frederick, maryland. it crashed near oldenburg, indiana, saturday night. the people on board were on a cross-country trip from kansas city to frederick. federal investigators are not sure what caused the plane to go

at least four people are dead and another ten injured after a fast-moving fire in brooklyn, new york. >> katherine creag has the up to the minute details on this family tragedy. katheri katherine, a terrible situation there. >> reporter: eun and aaron, it's a horrible thing that happened here. a tragedy hit thg family in brooklyn. a mother and her three children were killed. we want to show you video of the fire. where this is located. it is in an area called sheepshead bay in brooklyn. three little kids were killed. they're ages 3, 7 and 11. then their mother, a 40-year-old woman was killed. all of them perishing in a fire. we just talked with a fire commissioner just a little while ago. he told us a total of nine people had been inside this house. the mother, the father, their six children and a cousin who is spending the night and fire broke out about 2:20 this morning. a lot of flames and a lot of
