nbc's sarah dalof starts our coverage tonight. >> reporter: on the first day of a newly established route monday morning, tragedy aboard amtrak 501. >> things started to tip over and as it was going around and then all of a sudden just ended up on side, and everything went dark and stuff started flying around and that was it. then it stopped. >> reporter: a stunned motorist watched the train derail. one car falling to the interstate below, another dangling from the overpass. >> i was right in front of it really. nerve racking, kind of sick to your stomach after seeing this right now. >> reporter: multiple vehicles were hit by the falling train car as others came crashing into the pile. >> the people that were in all the vehicles, even though when you see the pictures, it's pretty horrific. at this point nobody in any of vehicles was fatal. >> reporter: 77 passengers and five crew members were on board the train which was headed south from seattle to portland. witnesses scrambled

trapped survivors and help emergency crews get them to hospitals. >> some of them couldn't move. they had back and neck injuries, some of them had broken legs or broken ankles, and most of them had head trauma. >> reporter: an ntsb team is en route to investigate the cause of the derailment. a dramatic dangerous scene as a routine morning commute turned deadly in seconds. sarah dalof, nbc news. >> our news4 i-team looked into recent train accidents. take a look. they found there were 65 total accidents involving amtrak last year, 26 of those were derailments. this year that number is down by 20%. again, the cause of today's derailment still unclear. we will be on top of the story throughout this newscast and online on the nbc washington app. >> from the rails to the skies, a tragedy involving a prominent local doctor and his family just days before christmas. they were killed on their way to maryland after their plane crashed in indiana over the

live from bethesda with more on those victims. pat? >> reporter: jim, he was a highly regarded doctor at this prestigious medical school. he flew his private plane to pickup his daughter for the holidays. then came the crash and their sudden death. we begin our story now with dr. louis pangor, the chief of medicine here. >> when you heard about this accident, how did you feel? >> it was difficult. both because he was a young man and the suddenness and the tragic nature of it and knowing that his daughter died with him and what this meant to his family. >> reporter: dr. louis can tax lena, he had both an m.d. and a ph.d. and a pilot's license. he was a top p

uniform service university of the health sciences. dr. cantalena, killed in a plane crash as he was flying his daughter amy home from med school in kansas. it was the same place he went to school and amy wanted to be an m.d., ph.d. like her dad. his losses are deep. he had to be very proud of his daughter. >> i would imagine. >> reporter: to want to be a doctor and a ph.d. just like her dad, that would make any man proud. >> i think so. and i imagine his joy in picking her up. >> reporter: that cessna plane went down saturday night in franklin county, indiana. it had just stopped to refuel and had taken off and then, then came the crash. killed the doctor, his daughter amy and a man described as a pilot friend. amy had two dogs o

one jumped out before impact and survived. back at the uniformed services university, they will not soon forget dr. cantalena. going to miss him? >> yeah. he always had this little twinkle, this little, this little look in the corner of his eye, like have you got what i said yet? really smart guy. >> reporter: dr. cantalena was the father of four. he lived in potomac. amy cantalena was a 2004 graduate of the stone ridge academy of the sacred heart. tonight the school sent out a note asking for prayers for amy and her family. doreen, back to you. >> such a tragedy for that family and all the community. thank you, pat. a mother in d.c. is

elementary school allowed her 3-year-old daughter to go home with a complete stranger. the child is now home safe, but the woman is still waiting for an explanation about how that could happen. news4's mark segraves broke the story. he joins us from northwest d.c. with more. mark? >> reporter: yeah, good evening, doreen. parents are just now this evening getting notice of what happened here on friday evening. that an adult was allowed to leave this school with the wrong child. now, we spoke with the mother of that child this afternoon and she told me when she arrived here at the school friday and learned that her daughter wasn't here, as you can imagine, she was frantic and she was upset. >> i'm like, oh, my god, what if she doesn't come back home, who has her, what if they try to do something to her. >> reporter: the 3-year-old girl's mother didn't want to be identified. she said friday when she came to cleveland elementary school with to pickup her daughter, she was told she wasn't here. school staff hadis

given her to the wrong person who had lefrt. >> i would never make that mistake. i know who i'm picking up. i would never take the wrong child. >> reporter: here's what we know about what happened here last friday. about 3:15, school was dismissed and the children were taken to after care. at 5:00, a man picked up the wrong child. he was here to pickup his niece. around 5:30, the mother arrived and called police. about an hour later at 6:30, the man returned with the child who was unharmed. >> what if something happened to her? who is she with? who came to pick her up? because i had no idea, you know, what was going on. i just -- i was very devastated. i'm still kind of traumatized about the situation. >> reporter: in a statement the school tells news4 we are looking into the incident on friday at cleveland elementary school. d.c. public skoolds is committed to fostering [ inaudible ]. the man who took the girm had come to pickup his 3-year-old niece who has a similar name. >> i asked him, you didn't realize that you took the wrong

and she responded. >> reporter: now, we can tell you that mother did not bring her child back to school today. she is still waiting to hear from the principal or anyone here from the school to explain how this happened and how to ensure it won't happen again. this is not the first time there has been trouble here at cleveland. last month a teacher was arrested and charged with assaulting a student in the classroom. we also learned that last month the former head of the after care program here was also accused of assaulting a student. she has been placed on administrative leave. a lot of parents say since that happened, this entire year, the after care program here at cleveland has been in complete disarray. that is the very latest outside cleveland elementary and shaw. back to you guys in the studio. >> mark segraves, thank you. >> now to a first of its kind terror case right here in our area, today a jury convicted a former metro transit officer of trying to help isis. prosecutors say nicolas young tried to providefi

through gift cards. isis is known to use encrypted app to help fighters. some of those apps charge thieves. young was arrested last year after give being the cards to an fbi agent. he is facing up to 60 years in prison when he's sentenced in february. >> today president trump unveiled his national security strategy. his four-point plan embodies his america first doctrine. >> some critics warn tonight this plan puts the u.s. at risk of international isolation. blayne alexander is at the white house now to break it all down for us. blayne? >> reporter: yeah, jim, doreen, at times that speech almost sounded like something that we might have expected to hear back in early 2016. the president at times almost seeming to go point by point down a list of campaign promises. abroad. >> reporter: the president laying out his national security strategy with four major focuses. defending homeland, american prosperity, american influence, and peace through strength. putting into policy many of his campaign promises from stronger military to tougher immigration laws. >> it calls for the construction of a wall on our southern border, ending chain migration, and the horrible visa and lottery programs. >> reporter: his plan also pointing to a strong economy. republicans say that goes hand in hand with their push for tax reform. the house expected to vote tomorrow. >> now it's time to pass this tax reform bill and make this economy even stronger. >> reporter: republicans want their bill on the president's desk by friday, the same day as the deadline to avoid a government shut down. >> it will impact the department of justice, it will impact

impact immigration, it will impact crime. and i hope that doesn't happen. >> reporter: the attorney general says he's worried about congress playing politics at the country's expense. now, democrats and republicans say that they are trying to work together on this. they are trying to come up with some sort of a compromise to avoid that government shut down on friday. but, jim, doreen, as you may imagine, the finger pointing has already started with each side blaming the other if they're not able to reach an agreement. >> surprise, surprise. all right, blayne alexander. blayne, thank you. >> nbc news has learned that the fbi warned the trump campaign that russia and other foreign adversaries would likely try to spy on and infiltrate the campaign. senior fbi officials delivered the warning to mr. trump during a classified briefing after he became the republican nominee during the summer of 2016. that is according to multiple government officials familiar with the matter. the campaign was urged to alert the fbi of

back to the breaking news outside tacoma, washington hours after an amtrak train derailed and plummeted onto i-5, one train car hit vehicles on the highway, another dangles from that bridge. at least six people have died, all of them on board the train. dozens more were injured. some critically. investigators are trying to figure out what made that train jump the tracks. we'll continue to monitor this and bring you updates as they develop. >> the lights are back on now at the busiest airport in the world after a massive black out, but the airlines say it may

before every passenger gets where they need to go. oh, yeah, travelers cheered when the lights came back on overnight at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport. relief quickly gave way to frustration. the ten-hour power outage caused more than 300 flight cancellations today on top of more than 1100 flights yesterday. >> there is no one actually walking around with a tablet that can help you. >> there was no one at b, no one at c, no one at d. >> atlanta officials say the black out was caused by a fire deep inside the airport's sprawling tunnel system that also took out the airport's back up system. news4 is working for you to find out whether your travel insurance will cover delays due to that black out. our consumer team checked with the u.s. travelers insurance association. they say most plans should cover expenses for extra meals, lodging and transportation associated with a significant ay

however, plans vary so they advise you to contact your insurance provider with questions. most carriers are also waiving change fees and may even refund travelers who decide to cancel their trips altogether. >> new at 6:00 tonight, the news4 i-team reports the va medical center here in washington has temporarily closed the room it uses to prepare chemotherapy drugs over concerns about mold. our scott macfarlane joins us now with a story you'll see only on 4. scott? >> jim, this is the latest health concern to surface this year at d.c.'s va medical center. tens of thousands of patients each year, news4 has learned administrators have closed the chemotherapy preparation room because of routine air sample showed the presence of two types of mold. the agency says follow-up tests didn't detect the mold but they closed the chemotherapy prep space through the end of this month. they want to install new air filters and new air equipment inside. in the meantime, they'll mix and

treatments in baltimore and deliver those treatments to d.c. for the cancer patients. earlier this year news4 i-team reported potential safety hazards in that medical center's surgical spaces including discolored surgical instruments and cracks in the surgical floors. the agency fired its long-time medical center director in august. to watch our previous reports, visit our nbc washington app and there you can also send the i-team any tips we need to check out. scott macfarlane, news4 i-team. >> virginia lawmakers are getting their first look at a plan to help fund our metro and governor terry mcauliffe's proposal includes a tax hike that could mean higher prices at the gas pump. bureau chief julie carey has the story. >> reporter: riding metro today, when she drives it is in a gas guzzling suv. the idea of even a tiny gas tax hike in northern virginia to help fund metro is a nonstarter for her. >> it shouldn't be based on our pocket. it should be based on metro. >> reporter: but the metro

governor terry mcauliffe as part of his final budget could mean a bump at the pump. the proposal would fuel metro with an added $150 million a year. some would come from funds already marked for northern virginia transportation, but the rest comes from tax hikes on real estate transfers, hotels and on the wholesale gas tax. something that would likely add about 2 cents a gallon. >> i made a tough decision. i've come up with a funding it's on the table and let's go. >> reporter: mcauliffe points out taxes were previously approved by the general assembly as part of the 2013 landmark transportation funding plan, but then governor mcdonald rolled them back. >> the tax increase the general assembly has already voted for so it's a no-brainer. >> reporter: republican law makers say the governor has it backwards. metro reforms must come first. >> whether it be on tensions, whether it be spending, the cost. what the governor is saying is give me the money first, maybe we'll fix it later. >> reporter: this woman says reliable metro service across the region is

the things i am really committed to paying for as a citizen of the united states, specifically this region. >> reporter: governor mcauliffe has a few weeks left in office so it will be up to his democratic successor ralph north ham to keep the pressure on. his spokeswoman says today northam supports those funding mechanisms that have been approved before being part of the budget. in springfield, virginia, i'm julie carey, news4. >> in the district there is a plan to raise the sales tax by nearly a penny to fund metro. that increase would happen if virginia and maryland did the same or came up with similar plans. maryland's governor larry hogan has offered metro $500 million over four years if d.c., virginia and the federal government do the same. it is important to note that plan has been criticized as falling short of the amount of money that metro needs. >> a maryland man out were a warning after he says his car was stolen with thousands of dollars of gifts inside. now the mistake that triggered

clearing skies, too. radar nothing to show. rain, snow, no, we don't have any of that. we do have some cloud cover trying to move in so we'll see partly to mostly cloudy skies tonight. most of these will continue to move on through. notice how far the rain line goes. all the way up north of buffalo, seeing snow into the northernmost portion of the u.s., but that's about it. we don't have any real cold air anywhere across our region. 48 right now hagerstown, 54 richmond, 55 in roanoke. it's on the mild side all across the region. so, tomorrow another very mild day. i think we'll see a lot of sunshine, too. high temperature tomorrow 41 degrees to start off the day, high around 60. sunrise tomorrow at 7:22, at noon very nice. if you're thinking about getting out for lunch, i think you're okay. 59 degrees at 4:00, nice and mild. it's not warm this time of year. average high is 46. we're well above that. cool by 7:00 but that's about it. here's the next seven days. you notice that's happening. rather warm together and then we get cooler on wednesday and thus. we have a little system that passes by

well to the south. shower activity, fredericksburg, over towards say leonard town down south. most of us staying dry wednesday. thursday sunshine colder, high around 44, just a little bit below average. back above average friday. then we get into the real tricky part of this forecast and that's of course saturday, sunday and monday. just happens to be the tricky est part, right in here. we've got some very warm air coming in. first at 60 on saturday, good chance for some rain. 48 on sunday, again, some shower activity likely, all rain. then on monday we've got a chance for some rain and the very warm air is ahead of, and tremendous amount of arctic air in behind this. so, once this system moves through, we go from 66 monday to 35 tuesday with wind chills in the 20s. and by the time we're starting to end the year frigid, a high of only 29 next thursday. some of the computer models have us at a high of 18 and 19 degrees. some really cold air coming in after we get very warm for christmas. but stay with us. we've got a lot more on this. changing forecast for sure

now at 6:30, we continue to follow that breaking news out of washington state. the deadly amtrak derailment there. >> we are hearing witness accounts now of what happened when the train left the tracks and careened off a bridge onto interstate 5. leon harris monitoring developments for us from the live desk. leon, what are you hearing now in >> jim and doreen, what we are hearing is we are getting word from witnesses who are telling of stories of racing to the tracks and crawling into the train cars helping get people off the trains if they could move. and making them stable inside if they couldn't. here now a live look at the scene, 13 train cars derailed this morning in dupont just outside of tacoma. the amtrak cascades was on its very first run. it was going between tacoma and olympia. some of the victims were pinned inside that train. one witness says he worked to free people a good 20 minutes before first responders a i have had roo. our sister station was told he believes all victims are out of

wrong child. >> a top medical professor at a local university and his daughter have been identified as two of the victims in a deadly weekend plane crash. dr. louis cantalena had flown to kansas city to pickup his daughter amy from medical school. they died along with another man when their plane went down on the way home. crashing in indiana over the weekend. we are told they had just stopped to refuel a short time before it happened. >> a former metro transit officer is facing up to 60 years in prison. nicolas young was convicted today of trying to provide financial support to isis in the form of gift cards. he'll be sentenced in february. >> no heat, moldy food, mice on the floor. women who escaped abusive relationships say their place of refuge is making them victims all over again. bureau chief tracee wilkins talked to some of the women about the conditions inside the family crisis center of prince george's county. >> reporter: these women and their kids are domestic viol

survivors. >> being punched in the face, slapped in the face, dragged down the hall in front of my kids. >> reporter: they've been through hell. >> i just decided enough is enough. >> reporter: that's why they turned to the family crisis center of prince george's county, a nonprofit largely funded with county grant money. women we spoke with say their situations got worse because of the conditions inside the shelter. >> you notice little things in the beginning and you don't say too much because you're grateful of getting out of the situation that you left from, just having to know that you don't have to wake up to your abuser. >> there's mice popping out of couches. it's mold everywhere. >> reporter: the women shared pictures of mold in the kitchen and in the bathroom. >> i have asthma and me and my daughter, and i'm very scary. in the night it's really, reeling i cold. >> reporter: it's cold because the women say many of the rooms don't have heat. >> i have four kids. i cannot let my kids sleep in the room

moldy food. >> me and my children are getting sick often. me and my children have a stomachache. i wasn't sure if it's because of the food and the mold in there. >> reporter: when we showed the pictures to the program's director sophie ford, she connecticut firm the pictures were from the inside of her shelter. >> it looks like the inside of a room. >> reporter: she maintains the shelter is fine. you think the food is fine, the room temperature is fine, there isn't a mold issue, that's what you're saying? >> that is what i'm saying. >> reporter: a spokesperson with the county executive's office released a statement that reads in part, the wimt and children whose life situations forced them to use this shelter are already traumatized and we must ensure that they are sheltered in a safe, clean and pleasant environment. any substandard conditions are unacceptable. now, the county has sent over folks from their department of family services to check out what is going on inside of this shelter. it is the only one in the county that accepts women and children. in brentwood, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> news4 is committed to helping

to cut a budget deal with democrats. government funding runs out on friday and republicans are not able to move a budget measure through the senate on their own. two sticking points for the democrats, the federal health insurance program for children. it's known as chip, and protection for the young undocumented immigrants known as dreamers. senator john mccain is back home in arizona and plans to spend christmas with his family there. sources tell nbc news he will not be there to vote on the republican tax bill that is expected this week. the 81-year-old plans to undergo rehab and physical therapy in arizona after being hospitalized at walter reed medical center. mccain was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year. >> a former today show staffer who had a sexual relationship with matt lauer says the former host abused his power. addy zanone spoke with megyn kelly this morning. she a

she and lauer had a sexual relationship for about a month. she says it was consensual. she gave variety magazine a detailed account of their relationship. she wants more women to be aware of men in power who target them. >> i did feel very alone and isolated, and unsure of what to do with this and i just carried it because who wants to be that person? >> right. >> lauer's representatives said they had no comment on his relationship with zanone. >> three women who have accused actor dustin hoffman of sexual misconduct are speaking together for the first time. in an nbc news exclusive, the women shared their experiences about their encounters with the actor. the women talked to cynthia mcfadden about why they decided to go public right now. kathryn roth played alongside hoffman several times and said he groped and harassed her repeatedly. >> i have been lying for 34 years. people go, how was it to work with dustin? i

the weekend in prince george's county. to make matters worse, the owner claims it was loaded with hundreds of dollars worth of christmas gifts for his family. as darcy spencer reports now, the ordeal began with a lost set of keys. >> reporter: steven hawkins' mercedes parked in a tow lot in landover, it was stolen from the mall in hyattsville start. it was recovered after searching and worrying. >> it was very rough, very rough. >> reporter: brought you to tears? >> whew, all night, all night. frustration, yeah. >> reporter: hawkins says he must have lost his keys because the thieves were able to find the car, possibly using his remote. >> they had to fell in the store and somebody saw them and just took my car. >> reporter: the car was found in southeast d.c. he says he hasn't come to get it yet, but he believes the holiday gifts that were in the trunk are gone. for now a friend is giving him a ride to work and back. >> she said,

car back for christmas. >> reporter: got an early christmas present. >> he got an early christmas present. >> it is unlikesly he'll get the car back and hole. most of the time they joy ride and crash the car and it's totaled. but for him to get if back whole and not have too many damages on it is really great for him. >> reporter: now hawkins has to come up with the $450 for a new mercedes key and $150 to pay for the tow. and he'll have to figure out a way to have christmas for his kids. hawkins says he's just happy to be getting his car back so he can work and go visit his son. he says he doesn't even want the thief to punished. >> even if they caught the guy i wouldn't want him to be punished. >> reporter: why not? >> it's the holidays. i don't want to be in jail and i don't want to see nobody else in jail. >> reporter: until he can get his car back, he's depending on the kindness of friends to get him where he needs to go. in landover, darcy spencer, news4. >> news4 is work being for you with some of the steps you can take to keep your car safe.
