and that breaking news just coming in now from northeast washington, where an apartment went up in flames. it happened tonight here on downing road near rhode island avenue. a woman was sent to the hospital

>> a second woman and a firefighter were also taken to the hospital. both are expected to be okay. we just got these pictures in of a dog who was rescued from the flames. that fire broke out in a first-floor apartment. fire crews now have it under control. investigators are trying to figure out how it started. >> we also have new information tonight about speed and that deadly amtrak derailment in washington state. >> nbc news cites multiple sources who say investigators are looking at the possibility that the train was traveling at 80 miles an hour in a 30-mile-an-hour zone when it flew off an overpass and onto a busy freeway below. three people are dead, more than 100 others are injured. all the victims killed were on the train. >> this was the inaugural run of a new route on that train. we'll have a live report from dupont, where wash state. that's ahead in about 15 minutes. back in our area, more breaking news tonight. shots rang out tonight on a

southeast. leaving a man dead. news 4's shomari stone went straight to the scene for us where police describe the man they're looking for right now. >> reporter: right now d.c. police are searching for the shooter. i'm standing on a hill, bringing you as close to the scene as possible on the soo side of that metal fence, other side of that crime scene tape is the basketball court and that is where the shooting took place we're on the 1800 block of bruce place southeast. a woman told me she heard shots fired around 6:00 monday evening. people who live in this community tell me the team was on the court when someone chased him, robbed him, and shot him. he died. police will not confirm that he was robbed. but they do tell us that the shooting happened near a playground in the frederick douglass community center. i talked to some people who live in in community. let's hear what they have to say. >> it's kind of scary. >> my

the perpetrator that done this. >> reporter: and right now police tell me they are looking to a male dressed in a red hooded sweat shirlt. detectives urge anyone with information to call the d.c. police. detectives have not released the name of the shooting victim, the teen or his ang. in southeast d.c. shomari stone, news 4. leon harris here at the live desk following breaking news. the build-up to tomorrow's tax reform vote taking a dramatic new turn tonight. police arrested protesters at the capitol. some taken into custody were in wheelchairs. dozens of people gathered. some of the dramatic video you see here shows these people laying down on the ground as officers moved independent officers repeatedly told the people to leave, but many of them decided to stay put. organizers with the working families party organized the rally tonight. they

recent traffic stop but as nurz 4s derrick ward reports police say it's just not true. >> reporter: it was wednesday december 29th. departmenties with the loudoun county sheriff's office were conducted a speed enforcement in ashburn. they were using a radar to determine the speed of an object. the sheb's office says su'a craven, say washington redskins safety, was speeding. >> said i was going 39 in a 35. >> reporter: the official report says it was 39 in a 25-mile-per-hour zone. about a mile away they pulled cravens' car over. >> they got squad cars out here. >> reporter: it ended here in this parking lot. cravens says this is where he was surrounded by police, roughed up a little bit 1/4 he started doing a narrative, filming it with his phone. the video was posted to his twitter account. >> well, they say stay in your car right up on me. i said what? pulled me out of the car said calm down, started pushing me up against the web.

office also says cravens was cited for having car windows with too much tint. he says the deputy that pulled him over made aaccusations. >> this man opened up my dar, was saying i smelled like weed. >> reporter: the statement released by the county sheriff's office db adrets cranes' claims that he was profiled. he has a court date on january 26th. we's will reached out to cranes' agent but so far we've gotten no response. in loudoun county derrick ward news 4. chopper 4 flew over the scene of a large brush fire in gaithersburg. this happened on hawk inds creamery road near laytonsville road. firefighters doused foot and i contain contained it. but it's far from being extinguished. the department tells us it will burn for hours if not the entire night. they're klessly moshting the fire. no word about what caused it. it's a race good tote back up and running after a power outage knockout out the busiest airport in the world. we're till feeling the effects of yesd ten-hour blackout

atlanta's hartsfield jackson international airport. more than 400 flights were canceled today on top of the 1100 canceled yesterday. a fire inside an airport tunnel is to blame. these new images show some of the damage underground. airport officials say a switch caught fire, then burned through seven critical lines knocking out the main and the backup power system. >> the fire created a failure of all those cables. >> reporter: apparently one of the wires leading to the switch was frayed. airport authorities say they believe a rat may have chewed on that wire and that could have sparked the fire. he loved medicine and he loved to fly. tonight friends and family grieve after a single-engine plane crash killed a maryland professor, his daughter and her friend. dr. louis cantolina was piloting a small plane on saturday. he picked up his daughter in kansas and was heading back to frederick,

that plain later crashed in oldenburg, indiana. the crash killed one dog on board. a second dog survived. kalt leona tied at university of health sciences in bethesda. >> it was difficult. both because he was a young man and the suddenness and the tragic nature of it and knowing that his daughter died with him and what this meant to his family. >> reporter: his daughter amy was studying to earn both her m.d. and ph.d. just like her dad. authorities say the plane had instrument problems which caused it to go down. the massive fire that's been turning mountainsides into ash in southern california is still burning. it's now the third largest wildfire in california history. and it only needs to consume a couple of thousand more acres to become the largest ever. the good news, though, the weather is improving. the bad news, it can could be well into january before this fire could be fully contai

a newly established route monday morning tragedy aboard amtrak 501. >> things started to tip over and as it was going around and all of a sudden just ended up on its side and everything went dark and stuff started flying around and that was it and then it stopped. >> reporter: adds stunned motorists w567d the train derail, one car falling onto the interstate below, another dangling from the overpass. >> i was right in front of it. really nerve-wracking kind of sick to your stomach after seeing this right now. >> reporter: multiple vehicles were hit by the falling train cars as others came crashing into the pile. >> the people that were in the vehicle, even when you see the pictures it's pretty horrific. at this point no one in any of the vehicles is a fatal. >> reporter: witnesses vamballed to rescue trapped survivors and helped emergency crews get them to hospital. >> sthf them couldn't move. they had back or neck injuries. snf them had broken legs or ankles. and most of them had head

trauma. >> reporter: a dramatic dangerous scene as a routine morning commute turned deadly within seconds. these train cars will likely be removed tomorrow and go on to a warehouse where they will be analyzed by the ntsb and used as evidences ato what went wrong here. i'm jennifer bjork lupd live in du pont, washington. jim, doreen. >> a lot more to learn. jennifer, thank you so much. only on news 4, tonight a mother says she's still shaken after school staff sent her 3-year-old daughter home with the wrong person. it happened at cleveland elementary school in the shaw neighborhood on friday. a man returned the school to the girl safe and unharmed about an hour later. he originally had come to pick up his 3-year-olds niece, who has a similar name and didn't know he had picked up the wrong child because the girl responded to his niece's name. the girl's mother says she
