need it next week. >> cover my ears, chuck. we're following breaking news. we're loworking to learn more about how a car crashed into a home. the home is in upper marlboro. no word if anyone is injured. but we're working this story hard. stick with us for any updates. let's go to another breaking story. federal safety investigators say the train that derailed in washington state was going more than twice the speed allowed around a curve. ntsb says it was traveling 80 miles an hour in a 30 mile zone. the train was making its way from seattle to portland. three people were killed. more than 70 others had to be rushed to the hospital including ten with serious injuries. one couple talked about what happened from their hospital bed. >> tossing and squealing and ra

kind of got dark. on the floor. >> count your blessings. try to live day-to-day. keep out of trouble. >> that couple has been discharged from the hospital with only minor injuries thankfully. ntsb investigators are expected back on the street today to figure out what went wrong. we're also following a developing story in southeast d.c. police are searching for the man who killed a teenager at a community center basketball court. that shooting happened last night on bruce place in the douglas community center. folks in the community said the teenager was on the court when someone robbed him and shot him. he died at the scene. police have not released the young person's name yet. this morning a woman from d.c. is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries from a fire. that started inside an apartment on the first floor of a

rhode island avenue and northeast d.c. firefighters rescued this puppy from the fire. thankful thankfully. no word on how it started. this fire still burning. chopper 4 flew over the scene last night. firefighters doused the fire and contained in as much as they could. it continued burning for hours. no word yet on what caused it. right now, things are getting back to normal for air travelers after that massive power outage at hartsfield jackson. the blackout lasted more than ten hours. but the ripple effects were felt all day monday for millions of travelers. flights were canceled, on top of the 1100 canceled sunday. these new

the damage. airport officials in atlanta say a switch caught fire and burned through several critical lines knocking out the main and backup system. >> it failed. but our focus and our responsibility for this airport is to share the liabilities 100%. it failed. now we have to respond and make sure it doesn't happen again. >> parentally, one of the wires leading to the switch was frayed. a rat may have gnawed on that wire and that may have sparnked the fire. here's a live look at the capitol. later this morning, they start to vote. the house scheduled in the afternoon and then the legislation heads to the senate for passage there. it cuts the corporate tax rate and does away with popular tax deductions. it eliminates the mandatory health insurance coverage by 2019. tonight on nbc, one of

minnesota police shot a man inside city hall after he took out a weapon and started to hurt himself. police state man was left alone in an interview room yesterday. the man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. the officers involved have now been put on administrative leave. the surveillance video from that room will be turned over to state investigators. this morning, an increase in humidity and decrease in wind speeds are helping firefighters fight that thomas fire in southern california. at last check, cal fire is reporting that the fire is 50% contained. it's a slight improvement from yesterday. more than 1,000 structures have been

home where the eagles recorded their hit, hotel california. you know, you're really good when you get not one, but two jerseys retired. last night the lakers retired both numbers kobe bryant wore during his basketball career, 8 and 24. he's the first player in any professional sport to have two numbers retired. kobe was an 18-time all-star. played 20 years with the lakers and won five championships. kareem abdul-jabbar, shaq and magic johnson were all there. the pair of i conniiconic numbe were immortalized. there's not a lot of time left to finish the holiday to-do list. aimee cho is working for you and has tips to check off the last-minute gift list. >> if you still need to get to the stores this holiday

boot. but the clouds come back in tomorrow, then we get typically chilly to finish out the week. looks like a really high chance for rain this weekend. particularly saturday and monday. not looking like a pretty christmas. may not be that cold until the day after christmas. right now, 42 in washington. light wind out of the south, averaging 5 miles per hour. most of the suburbs are back in the upper 30s to around 40. a big range of temperatures this morning. variations in the amount of cloud cover has put a range out there. it's 30 in warrenton, virginia, but 50 in frederick, 50 in martinsburg and 41 in annapolis. a big range early this morning. but with the return of sunshine and a light south wind during the course of the day, afternoon temperatures should have no trouble getting close to 60 degrees in most neighborhoods. frederick, maryland, 50 now, 60 not much of a stretch at

the i-team did some digging on recent train accidents. they found there were 65 total accidents involving amtrak last year. 26 were derailments. this year that number is down by 20%. we're going to post any updates on yesterday's derailment in the nbc washington app. we're following a developing story in southeast washington. police are searching for the gunman who killed a teenager at a community center basketball court. the shooting happened last night on bruce place southeast at the frederick douglass community center. people there told news 4 the teen was on the court when someone robbed and shot him. he died at the scene. the victim's name has not been released. this morning, a d.c. woman is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries from a fire. it started inside a first floor apartment on downing road last night. a second woman and a firefighter were also taken to the hospital. they're expected to be
