area. mother anna behar, absolutely loved her neighbors and was tight with a group of mothers in this area. son daniel, laurel hills elementary school, injured. husband, moises behar and 15-year-old david behar, i apologize if my words are not matching the pictures because i can't see the product that is coming out here. earlier, a group of the mothers gave us an outpouring of their feelings. here's what they had to say. >> anna had a bigger than life personality, a tremendous greeting when you'd see her at the door. if she knew you were coming, you could hear her through the house yelling because she'd be so

recount gave shelly simonds a razor win by one over yancey. a panel of three judges agreed with the one vote and now they are in a dead heat. no word on when that will take place. republicans would hold on to power in the house by one seat, 51-49. physical simods wins, they would have to work out a power-sharing agreement. at least 147 ballots were assigned to the wrong district. so more to come on that. >> we may

>> it could be a while. poor conditions inside a shelter for domestic violence victims. >> the women inside are telling the truth and now the county is stepping in to help. what have you learned here, tracee? >> reporter: the county has come in here to see for themselves. they are saying they want these problems fixed. her family worked two years at the family crisis center in prince george's county before fired last month. she says what she thinks of the conditions the women are living in, she is brought to tears. >> there's a chronically ill woman in that building. there's a chronically ill child in that

>> reporter: mold on the walls, broken ventss, moldy, old food. these are just some of the complaints. when i spoke with the executive director of the shelter, she would not confirm the pictures. you wouldn't li live in that sh you think the room temperature is fine, there isn't a mold issue? >> that is what i'm saying. >> reporter: the county has inspected the shelter and the director of family services agrees. >> things are not fine. we need to make sure that this facility is safe and clean not not just for the women but for the children. >> reporter: before inspections could begin, they recorded the executive director throwing out old food. >> the women are saying that trash is being t

for the first time. they say that there was some shredding going on. >> once again, everything is an ongoing investigation. i think we've done a good job of answering your questions. thank you so much. >> reporter: they are trying to get rid of some of the documents and the worker confirmed that was the executive director inside of the kitchen. now, many of the people here on facebook and twitter, you all have reached out to me and asked how you can help the women inside of the shelter. and if you're interested in making donations, those donations can come here to the prince george's county department of family services. the women in that shelter will be placed in hotels if they decide they'd like to leave temporarily thanks to the help from family services. reporting live,

. only on news4, a consumer investigation getting results tonight. last month we told you about controversial guardrails lining our roads. today maryland announced it would not install any more of those guardrails. >> susan hogan is working for you and joining us now for an update. >> that's right. the problem is with the end piece of the guardrail. there are a lot of different types out there, as you may know. several lawsuits claim that this is defective and sometimes leading to tragic results. at least six people have been killed. as we told you last month, about a dozen states, including virginia, have decided to stop

using them. transportation officials tell us, starting immediately, they will only use guardrails that meet new, stricter trash test standards and the x-lite does not qualify. >> with the ability of other products and the removal of the x-lite from the approved list, we made the proactive decision to stop new installation and go with the new products. >> so now starting next summer, all states will have to switch to products that meet these new standards in order to use federal money to buy the guardrails but there are still roughly 2,000 of these x-lites that will remain in place for now. and in a statement to news4, the maker of the x-lite said there is no road safety equipment that will prevent injury but they have reduced t

accidents. go to our nbc washington app and search guardrails for more information. >> nice to know they are paying attention. >> absolutely. glad they are. >> thank you, susan. >> sure. now, this just in, d.c. is getting even bigger. the mayor office says in the last year, 10,000 people moved here. the census bureau says the population should hit the 700,000 mark in the next few months. the population has risen ever year since 2006 in the district. the mayor's office attributes it to more jobs. a sleigh full of santas picketed in northwest d.c. today joining a nationwide protest by union organizers who say walmart employees are not being paid fairly during the holidays. organizers say walmart stopped paying its employees holiday pay last year. one of the protesters out there said he'd like to see walmart employees unie.

a family of prince george's county asking why. they have been forced

their home by yet another fire. >> they are grateful they survived but can't believe it's happened again. burned out of a home three times in recent years. they shared their story with news4's chris gordon. >> reporter: tanya and her family filled a u-haul with the few items they could salvage but recovered something valuable. pictures. >> family. they're my babies. >> reporter: they ran from their apartment when they heard someone yelling. tanya and her family got out right before their apartment building was engulfed in flames. >> did you have renter's insurance? >> it was just canceled because i lost my job. >> reporter: it's history repeating itself. on december 19th, 2012, her house burned down and firefighters brought toys for her children at christmas.

mother and that house burns. then, yesterday fire leaves them homeless again. >> what am i supposed to do? i can't cry. i have to keep moving. i have a family to support. >> reporter: the fire left at least 32 people homeless. the men red cross is providing money for food, hotel and clothes. a local cler ygy is taking up money for donations. if you wonder what they need, the answer is everything. but they feel blessed that despite the flames that took so much, they all made it out safely and that's their holiday blessing. >> i don't look for the presents i look to be with family, friends, loved ones. >> reporter: she has not lost her faith. reporting from prince george's

county, news4. >> quite a story. we're getting a look at a brazen robbery from last friday at a bank on route 1 in beltsville. in part of the video, one of the thieves has an assault-style rifle. they took the cash and drove off in a van. police found that van a little later without the suspects or the money. a spike in certain crimes at mgm national harbor casino. there are government records that show at least 23 thefts or robberies since october and the most at any maryland casino in any month this year. only one of the incidents was a robbery and at least ten were complaints from customers about missing money. the maryland lottery and gaming control agency will review the report tomorrow at a public

it sounds like commonsense. every driver knows it's the law to yield to pedestrians but a virginia state lawmaker wants to clarify exactly what yield means. democratic senator barbara has filed a bill that requires drivers to stop and remain stopped until pedestrians have safely crossed the street or highway. she told arlington now that under the current writing of the law, drivers can go through half a crosswalk while a pedestrian is crossing the other half. 75 years ago today, the navy commissioned the "uss herndon." >> in 2019, local band students will return to the beaches of france for a d-day anniversary commemoration. >> angie goff began working on this assignment before heading out on maternity leave so news4's david culver picks up the

tonight. this moves out by tomorrow and most of tomorrow looks okay. it's saturday. friday is great, too. saturday is the day to watch out if you're traveling. we're on the mild side. rain to the north. we could have some flight delays in parts of the area. maybe around boston with some rain there. pittsburgh, rain to snow. if you're traveling from d.c. to pittsburgh, you could run into rain and snow. in the 30s, back behind it, a little bit of an accumulation possible in the pittsburgh area. it's the mountains we have to worry about driving through that area. i-9 i-95, a mess from richmond and d.c. and sunday right now it looks okay. so just know that for travel purposes. no problems on thursday or friday. 62 on saturday with that rain likely. christmas eve, no problem there either. we're starting to cool back into
