the mixing bowl area just a few minutes ago. a little more traffic but still not too bad. on the northbound side, we are starting to see some traffic slowing down here and it is only going to get worse as the day wears on. now, aaa, you know they love coming up with these interesting ways of saying things. they're calling this the terrible traffic trifecta. they're saying that today is going to be the worst travel day of the holiday season. so brace yourself, folks. 7.2 million people will be traveling by car. the worst traffic is going to be from 3:00 until 6:00 tonight. that's when commuters, commuter traffic will mix in with the people getting out of town. that is going to be the worst. now the travel times are expected to be about 2 1/2 times longer than normal during that period. 3:00 to 6:00. keep that in mind. let's look at the historical hotspots here.

atlanta hartsfield aren't spilling over into the weekend. we'll have coverage of the holiday rush all morning. police have reopened some lanes on the interstate highway in washington state where a train derailed and sent railcars tumbling down to the highway. last night work crews cleared the two left lanes of southbound i-5. the right lane remains closed while they repair damage guardrail and clean up the area around it. they hope to open a third lane this morning. >> the anne arundel police chief is shaken but otherwise okay after a car rear ended him early wednesday morning. this is video of the scene on route 65. timothy altomare was in his cruiser when the driver hit him. medics took him and the driver to the hospital to get checked out. doctors did later release the chief and we're waiting to get word if that driver will be cited. more details emerge after a bus carrying cruise ship passengers overturned on tuesday killing

here's future weather. as we go through today, things are pretty quiet. tomorrow, friday afternoon. we start to see snow moving into new england. could have delays in new england especially around boston. also storms flaring up from texas to tennessee. we'll watch that closely. this system gives us the next rain chance into the weekend. there's saturday morning and then we go into saturday evening. the rain chances continue and we're much drier as we go into sunday. here's your weekend forecast. temperatures will be mild with the rain moving in around 60 degrees saturday with showers more likely later in the day than for sunday. mostly dry. temperatures cooler. down in the mid to upper 40s. some of the clouds trying to clear out sunday. for monday morning, though, there's the next chance. we're looking at a chance of rain and snow showers. the temperatures as we go through each day here look colder for monday. that's your christmas day. we'll continue to see colder weather later in the week. we're also watching the roads closely.
