yeah, everybody is going to be on the big major roads as everybody getting out of town fofrt holidays or coming into town, either way. temperature wise it's a chilly one and we've started to see the wind pickup here in the last 15 minutes or so giving us a little bit of a wind chill. right now the temperature 43 degrees d.c., 42 up towards the hagerstown area. much warmer to the west. notice, it is 58 degrees in charles town, west virginia. so, watch out for that as we move through the rest of the night tornt. it is going to cool quickly. tomorrow a pretty nice looking friday. we're tracking your travel plans. the big issue is saturday. we'll have much more information on that. and looking at a cold christmas. not just a cold christmas, but a frigid last week of december. we're going to talk much more about that as well and our snow chances because we have a few of those coming up over the next couple of days. there's our shot right now of our holiday lights. you can see everything lit up in the front yard. we're going to come back later on, the storm team4 4-by-4. much more from holiday lights, my holiday lights.

thank you. >> reporter: andrea greenwich thanks doctors with flowers at med star washington hospital center. >> i definitely wanted to thank all the staff, you know, that assisted. >> reporter: she is thankful to be alive. >> from the very beginning we didn't know if we were going to actually be able to get her through. her injuries were so significant. >> reporter: prince george's county police arrested her boyfriend, 34-year-old la quin phillips, and charged him with setting her on fire inside her capitol heights apartment three months ago. did you ever think that he would allegedly do something like that? >> no. >> okay, your foot looks so much less swollen. >> reporter: andrea tells me she has burns on 73% of her body. tell me, what's going through your mind? >> with the severity of things, nobody expected me to be home so soon or able to do the things that i'm doing. >> reporter: she goes to physical therapy to retrain her muscles. >> and all of her skin wants to contra

the skin grafts. everything. >> reporter: but with the pain comes a sense of joy. >> hi, journey. >> reporter: andrea was forced to deliver her baby 33 weeks into her pregnancy. she named her journey. she's healthy. >> i'm happy, you know, and blessed that she was able to survive. >> reporter: police say la quin phillips, journey's father, she filed one protective order against him this past april. now, coming up at 6:00, you're going to hear from andrea greenwich's family. you'll see how they show her support. one thing i like is that she says she cannot wait to celebrate christmas with her family. live here at med star washington hospital center, i'm shomari stone, news4. >> it was january 20th of this year, the demonstrators took to the streets to protest

inauguration of president donald trump. there was violence. there was destruction. and more than 200 people were arrested. >> six of those demonstrators stood trial and today a jury found each one of them not guilty. news4's chris gordon spent the day in d.c. superior court. >> reporter: the defendants and their supporters dance and shout with excitement outside the courthouse after the not guilty verdicts are read. >> and when i heard all of us not guilty, that's the moment i felt like, yes, celebration now. >> reporter: on january 20th, d.c. police arrest more than 200 demonstrators protesting president trump's inauguration. prosecutors, however, never indicated the six defendants in this trial set fires, broke windows, or threw stones. next month, another group of demonstrators will face trial on similar charges of

destruction of property. >> this isn't about just the six of us. it's about the 188 people that are left to go in front of us and all we can do is hope these acquittals set the stage for them to also get acquittals and get off the way we did. >> reporter: brittany lawson is a medic and alexa wood is a journalist. they were both arrested during the inauguration demonstration. the jury decides these six defendants were exercising their right to free speech and lacked the intent to break the law. one juror spoke, but dee clieclo give his name. >> it was a thoughtful panel. it was a great bunch of people to work with and it was a lot of discussion and debate. so, i think, you know, we did the job that we were there to do. >> reporter: in a statement sent to us this evening, the u.s. attorney's office here in the district of columbia says, we appreciate the jury's close examination of each individual's

in the remaining cases we look forward to the same rigorous review of each defendant. that's the latest live at the d.c. courthouse. wendy, back to you. >> chris gordon. thank you, chris. a d.c. councilmember says thieves broke into his car last night. they also broke into his brother-in-law's vehicle. and then they stole his wife's car. and as news4's mark segraves tells us, those were the only vehicles that got targeted on that block. >> reporter: the evidence of the break-ins still visible today. shattered glass litters the street. cars ransacked inside. >> it's frustrating to know that you are in a vulnerable situation, that someone has taken advantage of people during the holidays. >> reporter: three cars belonging to the family of d.c. councilmember robert wright were hit. his car, his brother-in-law's car, both victims of smash and grabs. and his wife's car, stolen. thieves made off with a handful of gift cards

councilmember's car and while there weren't any christmas presents in the stolen car, there was one item that is tough to do without. >> i also had a car seat for my daughter which i need. >> reporter: and the thieves didn't stop at councilmember white's house. a fourth car in this block just off 16th street in shepherd park belonging to a neighbor also the victim of a smash-and-grab. d.c. police are investigating and point out that city wide crime is down this year compared to last. but they are working to deter these types of crimes of opportunity. >> recently we've been going around to different areas where we've had increased in theft and pass out these pink tickets. it looks like a ticket but it's actually say, hey, this is a warning to prevent auto theft. your car from being stolen. please follow these tips. >> reporter: according to d.c. police, the city is on track to end the year with significant decreases in nearly every category of crime, from murders to car break-ins. in the district, mark segraves, news4. >> some major

responding to the passage of the republican tax bill by announcing they'll invest or provide bonuses. at&t, comcast, and regional bank 5th third bancorp say they'll provide $1,000 bonuses to hundreds of thousands of employees. bancorp is also joining wells fargo in raising minimum hourly wage s to $15. boeing says it will invest 300 million in training and facilities enhancements. as nbc's stephanie points out, this is part p.r. and part demonstrating a relationship with the white house. >> we know that the president has an issue with cnn. the department of justice has gotten in the mix. comcast has benefited just last week -- you asked me who benefits from net neutrality. big media companies. so, comcast is doing something. boeing, huge contracts with the government. and wells fargo, 5th third bank, they certainly like that the cfp b now has

an update on our breaking news at the top of the hour. if you're just joining us it looks like there will not be a government shut dg sdown this christmas. the house has indeed passed that stopgap spending bill. it will fund the government, federal government through january 19th. the senate is expected to take it up later tonight. that bill also contains a special waiver. it allows president trump to sign the gop tax bill as early as tomorrow morning. >> it's been a tough month for an 11-year-old boy shot by a neighbor and that neighbor a decorated army vet. he was putting his weapon away when it was discharged. now weeks later, the boy is home and today he got an unexpected

prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins is in suitland with his story. >> reporter: this is just the pickup caleb and his dad mark needed. gift after gift for a boy who nearly lost his life to an accidental gunshot. >> you feeling okay? >> yeah. >> on the road to recovery, i understand. >> yeah. >> well, we were worried about you. >> reporter: on december 5th, caleb was accidentally shot just above his heart by a neighbor who was watching him at the time. caleb's father said that friend, a decorated veteran, did all he could to save his son's life. caleb has forgiven him. >> he's a good friend and he didn't mean to do it. >> reporter: now after multiple surgeries, he's thinking about getting back to playing basketball. >> just want to heal so i can get back on the court. >> reporter: surprises like this one from the prince george's

friends and maybe provide you with a couple of extra christmas presents. >> thanks. >> how is that? >> cool. >> reporter: while caleb is home, he still has a long road to recovery. if you're interested in helping, you can go to nbc washington and search help caleb. in suitland, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> virginia voters went to the polls about a little more than six weeks ago, but now the winner of the house race that will decide the balance of power in richmond is going to be selected at random. after a recount, and a court battle, the democrat and republican in the race for the 94th district seat, which is in newport news down in tide water, each have 11,608 votes. next week their names will be printed onto pieces of paper, put into a bowl, and an election board member will be pulling out that name and that person will then be declared the winner. but it may not end there. the loser has the ability to request a

masterpiece they have here in prince george's county. let's look at the numbers right now. it is on the chilly side but not all that bad. high temperature today right around average, the average high is 45. we are right around there. now down to 43 degrees. those winds, we've seen it gusty a little bit here, but not much in the way of wind. but any time you get a little gust, brings you a bit of a wind chill, too. 39 in manassas, 38 in culpepper. and with the wind chill, it's going to be down around the freezing mark. going out on thursday night it will be a little chilly. the hat, glove, scarves, you'll need those. storm team4 radar, we don't have anything to show you here. what we are watching is a storm system on saturday. tomorrow should be fine. another great day if you're thinking about leaving tomorrow. there is not much out here. notice this cloud cover. this cloud cover is going to try to move our way tonight so we were will see more clouds by early tomorrow. that's going to mean partly cloud t cloudy to mostly cloudy skies on your friday. take a look at the planner. we'll

temperatures early morning 32 in d.c., that means many of you in the suburbs will be in the low to mid 20s tomorrow morning. waking up to a cold start. 35 degrees at noon, 54 at 4:00. it will be on the cool side tomorrow with cloud cover. all in all not bad. 45 degrees with more clouds. saturday is the day to watch. we're going to have rain to our north and west. nothing south ward. if you're traveling i-95 south on saturday, most of the day looks good. but if you're traveling i-95 north or you're going out i 70 out towards pittsburgh, expect some rain. watch what happens as we move on through the day here. we're actually go going to see this colder air come in. first for us we're on the warm side even into the 50s and near 60 degrees on saturday. notice the colder air back towards pittsburgh changing from rain to snow late in the day. this is what we're going to be watching for that. bring us on through here and we're going to continue to watch that change over from rain to snow. along the i-95 corridor, d.c. up towards philadelphia anw

york, that's where we'll see the rain. if you're traveling i-95 north, you're watching out for that. take a look at the next ten days. not only one, but two, maybe three chances for snow. 64 degrees on your saturday. 48 on sunday. so sunday a little bit cooler. only 37 on christmas. and, yes, there is a chance for some rain or snow overnight sunday night into early christmas morning. i don't think it's going to amount to much, but if you live north and west, you actually may have a chance for some accumulation, say, on your rooftops out that way. that's something we'll be watching. back to the ten-day forecast, and back out here live right now, you can see the lights, the big thing we're watching for next week is going to be the frigid cold temperatures. temperatures in the 20s. and as i mentioned a couple chances of snow, one on wednesday and the potential is there for a pretty big storm late next week. we'll have rain, snow, freezing rain, ice, lots to talk about. we'll talk much more about that. right now live out here in prince george's county right here in clinton, i'm

in news for your health, they're small, they're furry, they purr, but they're not cats. hasbro and the university teamed up to create a robot with artificial intelligence to help seniors remember things such as taking their medicines. michelle san miguel has the story. >> reporter: it sounds like a cat. it looks like a cat. and now hasbro is ready to take its robotic animal to the next level. the toy company is teaming up with scientists at brown university to add artificial intelligence to this robo cat. it's been on the market two years and is designed to be a companion for seniors. >> there is a lot to it if you keep folks socially connected or inter generationally connected. >> reporter: the national science foundation awarded a $1 million grant to design a battery operated cat with artificial intelligence. the goal is to help

perform simple tasks. researchers at brown are working to figure out which tasks the cat would perform. it could range from finding lost objects to reminding the person to go to a doctor's appointment. hasbro says the projects would help older adults live in their own homes longer. >> i haven't met too many people are like, i can't wait to move into a senior living community. obviously everybody wants to age in place and live in their home for as long as they can. >> reporter: hasbro has built a global reputation as a toy maker, but the company says it is about creating the best play experience for people of all ages. >> there isn't a lot of people focusing on the joy, happiness and play side of aging and it's, you know, i think here at hasbro that's what we think about every single day. >> reporter: hasbro says it wants to keep it affordable but says it's too early to know how much it would cost. >> alrighty. >> firefighters in the district going above and bo

breaking ground today on a new building that will be in downtown largo and become seat to the offices of the county executive and the county council. they'll be moving out of upper marlboro. this new building will be named after former county executive, the late wayne curry who died from cancer in 2014. >> and in charles county, a large home gutted this afternoon by fire. chopper4 over the scene just a couple of hours ago along chicamuxin road in indian head. firefighters searched the home and did not find anyone inside. no word yet on what may have sparked this blaze. >> the thought of a big lottery pay out, that sounds good this time of year. sounds good any time of year. >> or does it? a man has taken advantage of that dream and scammed people, though, out of thousands of dollars. just ahead of christmas. >> police say the man claims to be a psychic. as our northern virginia bureau reporter david culver explains, he looks for potential victims oc

>> reporter: tonight police here in the city of manassas park are warning residents not only in this jurisdiction, but also in jurisdictions across northern virginia. they say that there is a man who is posing as a psychic, claims he can see the future, and goes under the name angel cruz olivier o. you can see some of the images on his facebook profile, one that is still active. it is through facebook that police say he contacts his victims, those who perhaps are desperate and looking to earn thousands of dollars, hoping to win them, in fact, because this man claims that he can predict the lottery numbers. which brings us to this 7-eleven here in the city of manassas park. it's here back in october where police say the man walked with his victim into that store. they go in to buy a power baltic et. -- power ball ticket. later she wires the man thousands of dollars because he clms

needs to pay up on her end of the deal. and here's what's crazy about this, is where we are. that 7-eleven happens to be just across the street from this safe exchange zone parking lot which is, of course, the same parking lot for the city of manassas park police headquarters. but that didn't stop this bold individual who police tonight are trying to track down. here's his image one more time. they are spreading this poster not only across this city, but several other jurisdictions because they believe there could potentially be more victims and that he could be operating in several parts of our area. in the city of manassas park, i'm david culver, news4. >> and police in fairfax county say as they try to combat the opioid epidemic, they are dealing with a new situation. vet shopping. some drug users are turning to veterinarians to get their hands on those prescriptions. so far fairfax counts

investigators say the warning signs include new patients. they show up with a seriously injured animal. they request for a prescription refills, but they miss appointments and they know how to ask for that drug by name. >> tomorrow and saturday are expected to be the busiest days to fly if you're planning to leave town for the holidays. but at dulles, united airlines is working to make the experience a little less stressful. united is deploying 40 therapy dogs they are calling paw-fess ionals to give travelers a chance to dee stress a couple minutes. >> a group of d.c. firefighters had a special reunion with a baby they helped bring into the world. news4's camera is capturing that reunion. they got to meet jazz and her mom two months after the baby was born. they had jumped into action when it was clear baby jazz was not going to wait until they got to the hospital.

right now it's not looking all that bad. if you're going certain directions you need to know about it. >> i love that. doug is out there with the lights, i'm in here with the science. we'll go with that. 7:00 a.m. on saturday, you can see rain in pennsylvania, parts of west virginia, back through ohio. for the d.c. metro area, we're still dry but we will see some rain in the mountains and in our western zone. areas like frederick, fauquier and montgomery county. if you're heading to new york, new england, back through pittsburgh, erie and buffalo, into parts of ohio, you're going to be driving into rain. notice for most of the afternoon we're still dry. that allows temperatures to warm to around 60 degrees, even mid 60s in washington by 5:00 p.m. this is when showers finally start to move into the district. and we do have some rain out there for your saturday night in washington. so, we're going to be dealing with rain on saturday at times and that could lead to some tricky travel. so, you want to download our nbc washington app, the best chance
