christmas. chilly temperatures starting off this friday. wait until you see the rest of the forecast. good morning everybody. i'm chris lawrence. i'm molette green. eun and aaron have the morning off. meteorologist sheena parveen is here with the holiday weekend forecast. a lot going on in this holiday weekend forecast. >> there is a lot going on, especially depending where you're going. we have snow in new england right now. that's going to continue. we have rain locally that will be moving in later tonight. this morning, we're starting off with cool temperatures. if you are stepping out of the house soon, if the kids have to stand at the bus stop, warm coats. otherwise, 31 degrees in lorton. 38 now washington. some of these numbers are continuing to drop. manassas is now at 29 degrees. 36 in gaithersburg. 37 in leesburg. there's that snow up to our north. if you are heading into areas like boston or points north of that, expect some travel issues. the snow is going to stay to our north. it's not going to be here. we're watching the rain around texas. that will be here later tonight. take a look

after what's called the deadliest fire in that country in almost a decade. a witness shot this video of the flames shooting out of building early this morning. hundreds of firefighters rushed to the 8-story building to rescue people. some had to jump on to balconies to mats below to safety. 29 people were hurt. the olympic torch was set to pass through that city today. that had to be canceled in the wake of this fire. we're also getting new video of two devastating house fires two days before christmas. chopper 4 was over this fire last night. it was so intense, part of the home collapsed. you can see dozens of firefighters responded to the scene to try to put it out. we don't have any word how it started. looks like most is from the back of the house. we're waiting to learn if anyone was inside after it started. soon taaffe, chop 4 flew to this fire. >> it broke out on brink road that had no fire hydrant

airport you'll find these four-legged stress relievers. one thing that has relieved stress is folks who work for the federal government, avoiding another shutdown. the latest spending bill will last less than a month. it will keep it open through january 19th. it buys more time to debate a larger spending bill to carry funding through september. but it also puts off decisions on increased defense spending, disaster relief spending and daca. john delaney from maryland says it was a terrible choice we were given. he says he's going to fight for full funding of the children's health insurance program and a pass for d.r.e.a.m.ers when congress comes back. he's announced his run for the white house in 2020 already. we're learning new information about workplace conduct. the senate rules committee released data stating $600,000 worth of taxpayer funded settlements have been paid out over the past 20 years. but the rules committee is also

incomplete report. it included only one claim worth more than $14,000 forks sex discrimination and reprisal. they failed to include a settlement for sexual harassment in 2014 that was recently made public. another big story you'll be seeing on your news feeds this morning. huffington post published crude e-mails sent between the head of the miss america organization and other board members concerning some of the women. the pageant winners were fat shamed and called vulgar names. nbc news is working to verify the e-mails and reached out to some of the people involved. we'll update you as soon as we get more information. also breaking this morning, legendary sports broadcaster dick enberg died at the age of 82. he's behind so many of the great calls in sports. i retweeted this information a few minutes ago. he got the big break from ucla basketball. d p

and the san diego padres. his daughter told the a.p. he was found dead inside his home in san diego. right before he was supposed to hop on a flight to boston. his family thinks he may have died from a heart attack. they're waiting to get official word. today we'll be seeing a little bit more daylight. yesterday was the longest night of the year. that is why the people for fairness coalition picked yesterday to raise awareness for those who spend nearly every night on the street. the group marched to freedom plaza to remember the homeless who died in the district. one of the marchers albert townsend will never stay quiet on the problem of homelessness in washington. he slept on the streets for three years. he now volunteers for the coalition to spread the word about the growing problem. >> the people who died this year, over 200-some people died over the last four years. people are dying younger because their health is deteriorating. >> the coalition's next step is to ask the city for

crashes. this happened at the same location on route 28 near i-66 in centreville. one of the trucks hit a power line knocking out the traffic signals. then a car hit an officer who was directing traffic around the crash. everyone is expected to be okay. we've got breaking news out of texas. a united airlines flight has been forced to make an emergency landing after smoke a neared in the cabin. it landed in college station without problems. all passengers were evacuated to the terminal. not sure what caused that smoke incidents like that make flying so stressful at times. >> united airlines and dulles international airport is working to keep your stress levels down with the dogs there. they're made available to passengers to spend time with them while waiting at the airport. they're called

a warning this morning from manassas police. they're searching for a man who claims to be a psychic. but he's really more of a scam artist who is using the lottery to take your money. this surveillance video shows the suspect walking into a 7-eleven back in october. he went there with one victim promising her a big powerball lottery win. he later told her the ticket won and she owed him money to claim it. she wired him thousands of dollars. the man claims to be psychic and meets his victims through facebook page using the name angel cruz olivier owe. if you've seen him, call police. lottery -- the powerball and mega millions are offering jackpots that total nearly $550 million combined. mega millions draw on tonight for about 247 million. the powerball following up on saturday but the d

the government is going to stay open through christmas and into the new year. >> congress passed a short-term spending bill last night. news 4's tracie potts is live on capitol hill with how long the spending bill will last and what it does. tracie, good morning. >> molette, good morning. it avoids a government shutdown, provides money to get us over into next year. january 19th is the next deadline for a budget showdown and possible shutdown. it also gave about $2 billion to a veterans health program. almost $5 billion in emergency funding to the pentagon and, again, some temporary funding to hold over that children's health insurance program where 9 million kids, low and middle income kids are covered. but, again, some people are concerned that's not enough to last through march. >> boy, i mean, their to-do list is this high.

what's at the top of their agenda? >> fully funding or permanently funding chip, the children's health insurance program is a big one. there are negotiations under way for daca, the protection for young immigrants brought here illegally. that may come to a vote in january. they did not review the warrantless wiretaps for foreigners on u.s. soil. that's got to be dealt with. the skyrocketing insurance premiums, what to do now to purchase health nrnts. some people are looking at $3,000 to $4,000 a month for insurance premiums. they helped stabilize that and provide the subsidies for companies providing insurance to low-income families. that didn't get done either. >> tracie, get some hot tea and take care of your voice. president trump is leaving for mar-a-lago later this morning with his
