tomorrow if you're going to be out and about traveling tomorrow. could be a little bit of an issue. >> looks like christmas will be in the 20s, doug, can you believe that? >> next week, even colder than that. we've got some incredibly cold air coming in. let's take a look and show you what we're dealing with now. storm team4 radar shows some rain trying to make its way in here, the atmosphere too dry right now. i really don't expect to see much in the way of rain until after 11:00, 12:00 tonight. if you're going to be out that late, you may want to take the umbrella just in case. here's the rain and the moisture train making its way our way. you can see it coming on in. even some moderate rain back towards the west. we're going to be seeing periods of rain off and on overnight tonight into the day tomorrow. temperatures, they've been on the mild side today. we got up to 56 yerlier, 53 down to the south in richmond. mild air, even warm air coming in during the day tomorrow before it all comes crashing down. what are we watching? tracking tomorrow's rain, we'll take you hour by hour for that. much colder for i didn't say mass as somara said.

in the 20s. 43 temperature drop between tomorrow afternoon and christmas afternoon, and then snow chances, yes, they are on the increase as we head towards the 7 to 10 day forecast. we'll see you back here in ten minutes. >> thanks, doug. you can stay one step ahead of the weather no matter where you are or what you're doing this holiday weekend. just open the nbc washington app and get the latest from storm team4. >> just days before the holidays, the unimaginable happened to a family in reston. someone shot a husband and wife to death inside their home. >> and tonight we still don't know who did it or why. news4's derrick ward has been in the neighborhood on black fir court all day talking to neighbors and learning about the victims tonight. derrick? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that the last of the forensic crews just left this scene about half an hour ago. but this investigation is by no means over. and the darkness here sort of matches the mood of this neighborhood upon finding that

here, that have just been embraced by this community, ended up dead and they're trying to find out why. 43-year-old buckley fricker, her husband 48-year-old scotts fricker. she was an attorney, he worked for the federal government. they both were found dead in their reston home after 5:00 a.m. a third person was found shot. that person is hospitalized in critical condition. there were several others in the home at the time of the shooting, and police sought to ease the safety concerns of worried neighbors. >> the public safety detective said they have everybody beinged for. >> reporter: and that would include the shooter. still, the people who live in this community say this is a troubling turn of events. >> these folks had just moved in about three months ago. >> reporter: buckley fricker had a law practice, she specialized in elder care. this was on her website. >> it is generally less than $7,000 in this country. >> reporter: her husband worked for the bureau of labor

them and they were tall believed to be home at the time of the shooting. there were several people at the home and police are interviewing them. detectives spent most of the day going in and out of the this family's home. it's a crime scene now, christmas wreaths and crime scene tape. >> i don't know what happened, but it's devastating. devastating news. >> it's amazing because, you know, the loudest thing that happens around here is an occasional barking dog, but that's about it. no, that was quite a shock. >> reporter: and, again, it is quiet again in this neighborhood. but you get the sense that it will never be the same after this. we're live in reston, derrick ward, news4. back to you. >> all right, thank you, derrick. now with he go to a troubling story in maryland raising concerns about security at schools in our area. a man in custody tonight accused of stealing from teachers. after taking credit cards from their purses during the school day, our prince george's county

a story that you'll see only on news4. >> well, it's egregious act to go into the schools where you have children and educators that are teaching our children to steal from them. >> reporter: this is video you'll see only on news4. nakeem sheffield is in custody. they have sheffield on video wandering into public and private schools during school hours looking for teachers purses. >> he'd walk around the schools, enter classrooms that were unoccupied at the time. he would steal credit cards from the teachers' purses, staffs' purses, immediately leave the school and go to various stores. >> reporter: police say they have video of sheffield and target, safe way and sometimes giant using stolen credit cards and debit cards. >> most of the teachers didn't realizes it until they were contacted by their banking institutio

bladensburg police when they stormed his germantown apartment and mercedes, the same one seen on video cameras. >> several schools we watched him walk empty hallways, sometimes with students. >> reporter: scheffheffield is published author, admire my style. he poses next to expensive cars and takes pictures shopping in louis vuitton and sacks fifth avenue. >> we're glad none of the teachers or students approaches him inside the school. this could have turned violent. >> reporter: sheffield is looking at charges in montgomery county and prince george's county. he is already on probation for similar charges in charles county. in bladensburg, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> now to a story you saw first on 4. the executive director of a shelter for victims of

the news comes just days after our tracee wilkins reported on deplorable conditions at the family crisis center of prince george's county. some women living at that shelter told us there were problems with mold and mice and no heat. executive director sophie ford told news4 the shelter was fine. after our story aired, county inofficials inspected the shelter. they disagreed. she has now been terminated. president trump signing a law designed to change how you are taxed. republicans helping him cap off the year with a big victory. the fight is far from over. nbc's edward lawrence joins us live from capitol hill. edward, after a rough year, the president looked pretty happy as he left town today. >> jim, i can tell you he was glowing as he signed this bill, the tax bill into law. he says that this bill is the most important one that he has signed of his presidency.

>> reporter: president trump signed into law the $1.5 trillion tax overhaul. >> i am keeping my promise. i am signing it before christmas. >> reporter: he says the tax cut bill will sell itself to the american people when they open their paychecks in february and see more money. >> everything in here is really tremendous things for businesses, for people, for the middle class. >> reporter: he emphasized lowering the corporate tax rate to 21%, opening the arctic national wildlife refuge for oil and gas drilling, and eliminating the obamacare requirement that americans must buy health insurance. >> i think obamacare is over because of that. we're going to come up with something that's really going to be very good. >> reporter: the president joyous as he arrived in florida at his resort. on the other side of the aisle, democrats say the tax cuts still

decision. palestinians have been clashing with israeli forces since the initial announcement earlier this month. so far at least ten people have died. >> time is running out for people in maryland to buy health insurance under the affordable care act. the deadline to buy insurance for 2018 is midnight tonight. maryland extended the original deadline by a week. d.c. residents have until midnight january 31st to sign up. now, virginia's deadline already passed. in most cases the deadline apply to people signing up for the first time and those changing plans. >> a man from temple hills has pleaded guilty to dog fighting charges. court records reveal troubling cases. the fbi agents seized at least six dogs from the home of rodriguez lomax norman in august. news4 cameras were on the scene during the raid. they

plane. most of the country okay. we have had some rain down towards the dallas area. 53 degrees right now, winds out of the south at 3 miles an hour. no problems for us. really the only issue is snow happening around the boston region. if you're traveling by plane to that area, you might have issues. 53 d.c., 51 fredericksburg. storm team4 radar showing some rain trying to move in. the atmosphere fairly dry. most of this not hitting the ground yet. i wouldn't be surprised to see some rain in here the next few hours. if you're thinking about heading outs, may be a good yt to take the umbrella. there's the snow towards the boston area. some of this could become freezing rain north of boston overnight into early tomorrow morning. back towards the west we have rain around dallas, 39 in rain in dallas. that's kind of a nasty day for them. little rock seeing the rain coming right across our region. and we are going to see it here overnight tonight. here we are at 11:00 on our future weather. we have rain now.

and in here about the 3:00, 4:00 hour. still some showers, but really getting going and staying from d.c. north and westward through around the 9:00 hour. south of there, if you're traveling i-95 south, you're going to be a-okay. traveling north and west of dc tomorrow, 270, out 70, i think you'll run into some problems up i-81 sw i-81 as well. during the noon hour we are breaking up that rain mostly, but not an all-day rain. periods of rain. temperatures get on the warmer side, the rain comes back in during the afternoon and the cold air begins to move on in here, too. we even see some enhanced rainfall with that storm system that moves on through. and tomorrow night the cold air moves in. le let's talk more about the weather. somara in the weather center. >> i've been looking at the weather delays. because of the wintry weather doug was talking about in new england, here's a look at the forecast. if you're flying out of reagan national, temperatures in the low 60

we head towards boston logan and they are going to be seeing freezing rain tomorrow. that could prove to be a little bit of an issue for some of the travelers. but by sunday things start to look up for new england. same for hartsfield. hartsfield showers tomorrow. pretty warm, though, in the upper 60s. but sunday really a lot of the east coast starting to see some drying and clearing. if you're not traveling by air but you're traveling by car, take a look at your forecast. as doug mentioned there are periods of rain for your saturday. not a complete wash out, but heading up north i-95, that could be an issue, damp there. temperatures for saturday, low 60s. we move into sunday, we are expecting dry roads. temperatures in the low to mid 40s. hyattsville y i can't tell you about the traffic, though. shifting gears a little bit, i want to talk about what we're going to experience here in our area. 6:00 a.m., it's going to feel like 30 degrees in the district so on christmas day mostly sunny conditions, but that wind chill really sets us up for some very cold weather, feeling like t

20s by the middle of the day on your christmas. doug? >> that's going to be cold for sure. it's really going to feel about 40 degrees colder christmas day than tomorrow. 64 degrees tomorrow, wind chills as you just saw down do 24. so, 40 degrees colder between tomorrow and christmas. here's the next couple of days. 46 christmas eve, no problems there. christmas day that's where the cold air really moves in. windy, too, we could see wind 30 to 40 miles an hour christmas day. 41 on tuesday, and look at the incredible cold that moves in here. we're going below freezing for five out of the next ten days. next week, five days in a row below freezing. this is the kind of cold that freezes the river, freezes the potomac. watch out for that. and, yes, a chance for some snow next week. people have travel problems, travel issues next friday and saturday, so that is a forecast that you really want to make sure you stick around for because could be a pretty good storm we're looking at. >> we're shivering already. >> i'm not looking forward to that cold. >> thanks, doug. >> thanks,

the kids are probably still smiling at this hour. for nearly 30 years a local community center has brought joy to children each holiday season. >> wow, what a day. they did it again today in a big way. the kids got to meet santa and take home a brand-new toy. >> news4's darcy spencer takes us to the party. >> ho-ho-ho, merry christmas. >> reporter: just a few days before christmas, santa took time-out of his busy schedule to greet kids at merry center at adams morgan. santa, what brings you to adams morgan today? >> these beautiful children. >> reporter: they stood in the cold to see him, not on a sleigh, but a fire truck. what brings you here today? >> bringing the kids, see santa, take a picture with him. it's such a great experience for them.

holiday cheer and sweets to hundreds of kids who didn't mind the wait. tell us, what was it like getting to see santa in person? >> it was so amazing. >> reporter: some of these families have been waiting since 8:00 in the morning. the event doesn't start until 1:00 in the afternoon. once inside, they're going to have a lunch and each child will walk away with a free toy. >> okay, guys, here we go. >> reporter: once inside they were greeted by merry center staff. they were expecting as many as 1,000 people to show up for the annual event. >> 2, 1. >> reporter: kids got to sit on santa's lap and get a photo, a treat for the whole family creating lasting memories. perhaps for these kids, an early christmas present volunteers handed out the toy. 8-year-old daniella is one of the youngest volunteers. >> it feels good that you're helping center. mary center is a community health center that has several locations in the d.c. area. they serve residents from more than 100 countries. >> it's

we have one in the boston area bringing them snow, but not reporting any delays up that way. what we have seen is some toward the west with this system making its way our way. you can see the rain around little rock and that rain pushing all the way across into our region. that's where it's going to be in the rest of the region. we'll talk much more about that, i'll talk to you about christmas, and yes, those snow chances on the increase as we head into next week. the last couple days of 2017, going to go out with a bang. >> oh, yes, it is. we are liking, snow lovers, we are excited about the ten-day forecast. thank you, sir. this is a live look now at traffic on i-95, many of you will use this stretch of highway over the holidays and as usual you're going to have a lot of company with you. >> yeah, from maine to florida, the roads are filled with traffic. the back ups are a drain on your time, we know. and your wallet, too. you wonder, is there a solution? >> transportation reporter adam tuss looks into options that seem to cut down on

it's a story you'll see only on news4. >> reporter: i-95, the traffic -- >> is getting ridiculous. >> reporter: the delays. >> it took us hours and hours to come down through there. >> reporter: the headache. >> is it possible this is able, the right shoulder. >> reporter: in the d.c. area it's never easy, but the toughest stretch singled out is fredericksburg where traffic moves 40 miles per hour below the speed limit during certain rush hours. not along the east coast, 95 is a monster of a tough ride. from miami? >> here in florida, a major florida is congestion. a lot of it fueled by construction. >> reporter: to philly. >> here in philadelphia one of the biggest problems is congestion when four lanes shrink to three. >> reporter: to new york. >> here in washington heights, the biggest problem with i-95 is the noise and the pollution for the people who live right above it. >> reporter: a lot of the problem is just simply maintaining what's known

well, just this year alone, state departments of transportation from maine to florida are spending $7 billion to fix bad pavement and old bridges along 95. one way to get around some of the maintenance costs and a way to give people options, so-called express lanes. those lanes where you can pay to get around traffic or start a car pool and ride for free. these lanes have taken hold in places out west like california. they are also starting to show up in florida. >> you'll see the congestion. >> reporter: mike mcgurk, an operator in d.c. >> folks that drive by themselves or only with one person, now are choosing on occasion to pay a toll and get a faster trip. >> reporter: but not everyone has that option or understands how they work. >> wow, i've never -- i wouldn't even conceive of that. you would pay to get around the traffic? >> reporter: the other problem with 95 is

short cuts. side roads can be just as clogged. apps like wave and google map take drivers off the highway and into a maze of turns to save a couple minutes. those apps bring you right back to the toll road which is which are at least in the d.c. region experts say there is a big bet. there are some for whom toll roads will never make sense. >> having the toll road there gives them options. >> reporter: if your holiday travel takes you along 95, deep breaths, patience, and hopefully a smooth commute. along i-95, adam tuss, news4. >> breaking news tonight involving about 1 1/2 million pickup trucks in the u.s., fiat chrysler is recalling some of its ram trucks because they can be shifted out of park without the driver's foot on the brake. seven injuries have been reported so far. the recall covers trucks with shifters mounted on their steering columns. model years 2009 through 2017 im

of that recall, open our nbc washington app and search recall. >> news4 has learned montgomery county is finished reviewing security at all its 200 plus public schools. administrators launched the review after allegations of a rape inside rockville high school. some details of the review will remain confidential because they impact security. but school district report by news4 recommend expanding school security staff and adding more bilingual and female members. prosecutors dropped charges in the rape case. >> take a look at this picture. montgomery county police say a drunk driver crashed into a road sign on the inter-county connector just after 2:00 this morning. a wooden support beam from the sign slammed through the windshield, but the driver kept going. an officer witnessed the crash and turned on his lights but says the driver did not stop at

he exited onto shady grove road where he halftimely pulled over and w d -- where he was pulled over and was finally arrested. >> hard to believe the images. nearly 300 families, veterans and individuals who had been homeless will be spending the holidays in a home of their own this christmas. >> yeah, the d.c. government launched a program called home for the holidays last month. it's helping families like tamisha jackson and her two young children who had been living in shelters and hotels for the past three years. today they moved into their own fully furnished two bedroom apartment in northeast d.c. he likes that bed. 7-year-old somage talked to news4's mark segraves about what this new home means for him and his family. >> it's gonna be great and i'm happy that i spend time with my family on christmas. and that i get a lot
