morning at a home on 21st street southeast near trenton place. >> we think about the timing coming up to christmas. you and i just re-tweeted derrick ward's tweet. he is live at southeast this morning. he put out information about how you can help the folks. derrick, what else are you gathering? >> reporter: right now, this is still under investigation. crews are still on the scene, as you can see here. often, that is the case because with a fire like this, it could still be hot spots. that's why they keep trucks here. take a look. you see the damage there. the most significant damage done to the corner house. the house across that little breezeway from there, that house was damaged, too, just from the radiant heat. the house on the other side of that house also offered significant damage. 4:00 a.m., when the fire broke out, crews responded. everyone got out of these houses. no one was injured. in fact, we're told one of the residents uz t s was the first detect something was wrong. she knocked on the other doors

and got folks out. they had to get out in a hurry. some with just what they were wearing. some without shoes. some other neighbors came to the aid of their neighbors, giving them blankets and clothes. the council member's office is here, along with the mayor's office. they're helping the folks out, getting them lodging for the next few days. it is still investigation, how the fire started. the miraculous thing is no one was hurt. imagine being rudely awakened at 4:00 a.m., having to get out ahead of the flames. that's what these folks went through. luckily, again, no one was injured. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. take a look. we have some information. if you're wanting to help the folks out, here are some numbers. you're asked to text these numbers. one is 202-910-5099. 757-449-0410. gift cards would be greatly appreciated, but any help for the folks, especially around the

appreciated. we're live in southeast. derrick ward. back to you. >> thanks, derrick. a security problem at some of our local schools was exposed. >> it came after a man tried to get quick cash. it is a story you'll only see on news 4. we were there when police arrested sheffield early yesterday morning. police say he entered at least eight private and public schools in prince george's county. they say he walk ed the halls during school hours, looking for empty, unlocked classrooms. >> to steal credit cards from the teachers' purses, staff's purses. immediately leave the school and go to various stores. >> police say this is surveillance footage of sheffield inside target and other stores. they say he bought items at the stores using stolen credit and debit cards. he is likely going to face charges in prince josh

already on probation for something similar in charles county. montgomery county is finished reviewing security at its 200 plus public schools. administrators launched the review after allegations of a rape inside rock vilville high school. details will remain confidential because of security impact. be a report reviewed by news 4 recommends expanding school security staff and adding more bilingual and female members. charges were dropped in the rape case. your taxes are about to change now that president trump has signed a new tax plan into law. >> this is a big win for the president during his first year in the oval office. >> i am keeping my promise. i am signing it before christmas. >> a triumphant president trump using his pen to seal the deal yesterday. it is a $1.5 trillion tax overhaul. the plan lowers the corporate tax rate and ends fines for folks who don't have health insurance. the president si

it's the record we were all hoping would not be broken. this morning, one of the wildfires that's ravaging much of southern california is now the largest in that state's history. the thomas fire has burned through more than 273,000 acres. put it in perspective, think of all of fairfax county. it is larger than that. two people have died in the fire. more than 1,000 structures destroyed since it sparked in early december. it's only about 65% contained. >> whoa. that first shot, whoa. it gives you perspective. my goodness. >> they're in desperate need of relief out there. let's stay out in california. we're learning more details about an alleged terror plot targeting san francisco tourists
