we were in the mid 60s yesterday. can you believe it? it was so nice yesterday except we had the rain going on and off throughout the day. temperatures will top out in the mid 40s. nothing going on on the radar. however, we widen this view out, a little snow shower, a disturbance across the middle portion of the united states, and it's headed our way. we'll talk about that coming up. >> all right, thank you, lauryn. merry christmas to everybody out there. last minute shoppers, derrick ward is not one of them, but there's plenty of us doing our last-minute shopping. >> full disclosure i finished yesterday. news4 derrick ward is live this morning. you're at montgomery mall. what do we need to know, the last minute shoppers, what do they need to know? >> reporter: well, the mall is here and it's open. we have seen this parking lot start to fill steadily. so you know, i think you have some time to get a parking space

close to one of the mall entrances. we're here as you said at westfield montgomery mall. we have a bit of a bigger window than in past years because you have 31 days between the day after thanksgiving and today. and what we're finding is that people are here for a number of reasons. some come because it's a certain thing about doing it at the last minute. you have folks out on errands, you're home alone and you can wrap the gifts and others are looking for bargains. you may find some issues with selection. less selection. especially wrapping paper. i was in the store last night and you can barely find any of the wrapping paper, things line that. most people who are tank care of that stuff have done it already. now, the retailers are indeed a bit happy about this. we understand that 126 million people across the country are doing shopping between yesterday and today. for their christmas gif

so here is a list of the stores that are going to be opened late so that will accommodate that last-minute shoppers. target stores they'll be closing at 10:00. toys "r" us will be closing at 9:00. old navy at 7:00. walmart, best buy and macy's will close at 6:00. so you have a few hours before those visions of sugarplums dance in your head. a big day tomorrow -- christmas day. we are live at westfield montgomery. derrick ward, news4. back to you. >> good luck to all the last-minute shoppers out there. let's turn our attention to northern virginia where fairfax county police are preparing to charge a teenager with murder. news4's darcy spencer spoke with neighbors in reston which is shocked by the family tragedy. >> reporter: fairfax county police retu

attorney and her husband were murdered. flowers and candles dropped off by friends and neighbors line the end of the driveway. >> they were very friendly and kind people. >> reporter: a quiet vigil were held across the street. the couple who just moved in months ago are gone. buckley kuhn-fricker was killed along with her husband scott when they confronted a teenager known to them at 5:00 in the morning on friday. police tell us that 17-year-old also shot himself but survived. he remains in the hospital in critical condition. now police have obtained petitions charging him with these murders. many were thinking of the frickers young son who was seen playing basketball in front of the house. >> it's hard to imagine, he doesn't have parents anymore. and i can't imagine that christmas will be the same for him

>> kuhn-fricker's mother told news4 that her 16-year-old granddaughter was seeing a boy who is a nazi sympathizer. >> they found out the nazi stuff this past week and they forbade their daughter to see him again. >> reporter: the daughter posted on facebook a reference to her personal battle against the nazi ideology. >> the only thing that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. that was her last post. >> reporter: police pulled down the tape surrounding the house and an end to the investigation here. but no end to the many questions still being asked about how and why this tragedy happened. in reston, dorothy spencer, news4. this morning at least ten people are without a home after a destructive fire. take a look at this video here. it's cell phone video that shows you the flames that ripped ro

this was in southwest d.c. on friday. this all happened on 21st street. three homes were damaged. news4 spoke with neighbors who say they'll do everything they can to help the families. >> the whole house was just engulfed in flames. like it was surreal. it was the biggest thing i have ever seen. i was just praying and worried. we're a pretty tight community here so i think we'll make sure that they're going to be okay. >> everyone was able to get out in time and no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. and we have a reminder for you this morning. don't forget to lock your car and to keep your valuables out of sight especially after packing those christmas presents in your car. police in west field say -- west springfield rather say three people rifled through dozens of cars, stealing people's property. fairfax county police say they even stole a car on stan hope place. officers responded to 17 calls saturday morning and the criminals may ha

people's homes to steal their car keys. new this morning, a security threat involving the u.s. treasury secretary is now over. take a look here. chopper footage from los angeles, after the bomb squad was called in. a suspicious package was addressed to steve mnuchin and dropped off in bel air. the box was filled with horse manure. well, cruel or unnecessary? the trump administration is mulling over a plan that would separate parents from their children if detained. some say it's going too far. justice correspondent pete williams breaks it all down for us. >> reporter: with illegal border crossings up sharply last month, the department of homeland security is considering sending children to one detention center and their parents to another while they wait to see if they're admitted as refugees

immigration was a theme of the trump campaign and routinely separating families was considered last spring. but john kelly rejected it saying it would be used sparingly. >> the mother -- if the mother is sick or addicted to drugs or whatever. >> reporter: now with a surge in illegal migration at the southern border, administration officials say it's again under discussion as part of an effort to look at every possible way to discourage illegal migration. a group that lobbies for tougher enforcement says it will be an act of compassion. >> to dissuade parents from trusting themselves and their children to smugglers and the smuggling organizations that operate along the border are heartless individuals who treat human beings like merchandise. >> reporter: but advocates for immigrants say separating families is inhumane. >> ripping a child from the mother's arms is never a compassionate act. and no policy is going to deter a mother who is asking

and we'll talk about a little itty bitty chance of snow. all that in three minutes. >> all right. thank you. car crash deaths are on the rise and many believe that driver distraction from smartphones is a big part of the problem. but there are ways to cut down on the distractions when the wheel. susan hogan has more. >> reporter: using a smartphone while driving is a big no-no. but many people do it anyway. and the recent survey consumer reports found 52% of licensed drivers who own a smartphone, texted, played music, browsed the web, sent e-mails or even watched videos. the new smartphone and tech companies are introducing safety measures for teens and adults while driving. apple's latest operating system includes a mode which blocks alerts for both calls or texts. you can download apps for iphones or androids which allows

replies to incoming texts. some offer similar driving apps but all are voluntary. to play it safe, pair your phones, put it out of sight and use the voice command features in your car. >> distracted driving is not limited to smartphones. many have infotainments that contribute to drivers taking their eyes off the road. >> reporter: they're rated on the ease of use and factors that into the overall car rating. >> ironically at the same time many car manufacturers are developing newer technologies, designed to make new cars safer. >> reporter: like lane departure and collision warning systems. even automatic braking decisions to help you avoid dangerous situations. and these can be helpful, but nothing beats keeping your hands on the wheels and your eyes on the road. >> got to stay focused. if you plan to

beautiful out there. absolutely gorgeous. the clouds will continue to roll in throughout the day today. so lots of clouds around today. maybe an isolated rain or snow chance after about 7:00 p.m. to about 3:00 a.m. we'll show you that on the feature cast. very windy on christmas and then friday and saturday, we're watching a late-week storm. after we get through christmas then we'll start to focus on that. current temperatures in the 40s. mid 40s is where we'll top out. 65 yesterday. winds are calming in the afternoon. we'll stick to quiet and cloudy conditions. after 7:00, we could see that rain and snow. not seeing anything like that, but if you're traveling, we do have that system that -- that frontal system bringing rain to the eastern seaboard. another one flying into chicago, they'll have snow throughout the day today and into st. louis. it

england area. and just to pop out this map a little more, pretty quiet in the western portion of the united states except for pacific northwest, getting a little bit of rain and snow out there in the washington area. 45 is going to be our temperature today. slight breeze, calming in the afternoon. but what to expect on christmas, winds are picking up overnight. we'll have wind overnight, 10 to 20 miles an hour. tomorrow we'll have winds up to 40, 45 miles an hour. windchills are in the teens and 20s. 37 will be that temperature for tomorrow. bitterly cold. again, windchills in the teens and 20s. here's a look. we have a spotty chance of seeing light precipitation overnight. again, rain/snow mix. most of this is going to stay north of us, north of the d.c. area. again, not expecting any problems on the roadways and in maryland, howard county, prince george's county they were out trng

christmas eve. >> reporter: convenience reigning supreme. there you have it. some pluses to waiting. all right, hundreds of deserving children in our area are experiencing a lot of joy this holiday season because of a local group. firefighters and friends welcomed people to the elementary in alexandria and provided thousands of gifts. kids are meeting santa, tugging on his beard a little bit. then there's mickey and minnie house. they stopped by as well to see the children. take some pictures. the organizer's goal was to give 1,000 children a great christmas. >> we know, you know, a lot of families are having tough times so we want to make sure we're providing gifts for the kids. we want to make sure every child wakes one something underneath the tree. >> firefighters, police officers and sheriff's deputies volunteered to hand out toys, coats and gift cards. and the gifts were

firefighters handed out toys and gift cards to families displaced in that who arable fire -- horrible fire in hillcrest heights earlier this week. you might remember it forced 30 people from their homes. the fire department and toys for tots donated all the gifts. >> i love to see that holiday cheer. time now is 9:35. the ceo at the miss america organization sam haskell is stepping down immediately. this comes after top officials were caught in an e-mail shaming scandal. dozens of former contestants signed a petition calling for haskell and others to step down. the president and the chairwoman have resigned and this week the huffington post reported about e-mails that mocked the appearance and intellect of past miss americas. nbc news has yet to verify these e-mails. meanwhile, a global media power house is apologizing for a boys club culture that fostered inappropriate behavior. yesterday, "the new york times"

welcome back. apple has gotten some criticism after it admitted it slows down iphones on purpose to fix the glitches. >> so get this. the person who discovered the issue though -- a 17-year-old. >> yeah, of course. >> you know? nbc's rebecca cardenas reports from tennessee. >> reporter: an international tech giant cornered by a psa on reddit that apple could be slowing down our iphones took the internote by storm. a statement from apple admitted that the tech fire's discovery was correct. tech fire is 17-year-old tyler barney who taught himself how to take apart the iphone after he noticed the newer model was slower than his brother's older one. he tried replacing the battery, it worked. >> to make

band is preparing like no other. >> not just representing herndon or representing virginia, but representing the united states of america. >> reporter: in june of 2019, 165 students will travel to france. normandy beach. they'll march as part of commemorations for the 75th very of the d-day invasion. >> with the trip more than a year and a half away the band is feeling the impact for all their practicing for. the sound of music going beyond the band room and into the community. >> reporter: a herndon alum, angie goff, headed to the museum dedicated to lieutenant herndon. his heroics led to his becoming the name sake of the town and the ship. the "uss herndon" led the armada of some 7,000 allied vessels at normandy in june of 1944 an effort to take europe back from the germans. >> they had to go up and down utah and omaha beach very, very

enemy was posted. >> reporter: this woman is working to keep the ship and the crew members' memory alive. decades passed but the emotion resurfaces. >> these guys were pretty much all told they were going to die. >> reporter: it's believed the herndon fired the first naval shots of the campaign and no shots touched it. >> this is what the band members will be wearing when we march. >> reporter: more than wearing herndon pride, margaret wants them to carry something more personal. something to honor those who served aboard. a photo, medals, a journal. >> every day i'm waiting i strengthen the convict then that d-day is fast approaching. >> reporter: norman myers one of 170 "uss herndon's" relatives that margaret tracked down, a student will carry his legacy back to normandy. >> i think he'd

maybe a spotty rain or snow shower as we head into the overnight. current temperatures out there right now, we're in the 30s and 40s across the region. so this is pretty much where we'll stay. mid 40s is where we'll top out. again, your shopping planner, adam. temperatures in the low to mid 40s. you're inside so it won't matter. but if you're headed out in the car it won't be bad. you might have to worry about traffic. radar, nothing going on. we have some cloud cover, the clouds will continue to increase during the day. the system that rolled through yesterday, still hanging out on the eastern seaboard here. maybe a few showers could get going, southern maryland, eastern shore, after 3:00. everybody else is dry until after 7:00. then this system is headed our way. if you're flying into chicago you're going to have some delays because they're getting some snow. widen out the picture even more, the west coast, not dealing with too much right now. the temperatures are in the 40s. again, dry today. just a little cloudy.
