okay. hawaigh a patrol officer is remembered as a great man. he was killed after a suspected drunk driver slammed into his patrol car. police say the officer and his partner were rear ended outside of oakland. he leaves behind a wife and three children. the driver is in the hospital in serious condition and will be charged once he's released. president trump spent his christmas in florida at his estate in mar-a-lago. before they left for the holiday, he and the first lady recorded aid special message. >> melania and i are delighted to wish america and the entire world a very merry christmas. >> in the christmas greeting, first lady melania trump says this is the time of year when we see the best of america.

preview at what the trump administration is looking at for 2018. if you live in montgomery county, you may be able to prepay your 2018 property taxes before new tax measures go into place. the council will hold a special meeting today to talk about this plan. last week, the council said it would not rush a bill through on this. that has now changed. d.c., fairfax and other local jurisdictions allow homeowners to prepay their taxes already. i'm chris lawrence back at the live desk. relations between britain and russia are strained. the defense minister said it had to escort a russian warship as it passed through the north sea over christmas. last week, boris johnson said there is abundant evidence of moscow meddling in the elections. will not tolerate this aggression. b

slag owe parkway with more on this deadly shooting investigation. derri derrick, what's going on? >> reporter: we can tell you we're in the 6200 block of flying he will parkway. police concentrating on this area. there's been a shooting in the house. we don't have much in way of detail. details on the scene. forensic crews are going over the area outside of the house and coming in and out of the house. you won't be able to get down this block as the investigation goes on. many details. it's happened earlier this morning. questions are, whether it was someone that lives in the house or someone that went into the house. all of those things are being pieced together by investigators. we'll bring you the latest information once it becomes available. a fatal shooting at a house in the

might get somewhere. >> not satisfy great -- >> this forecast. >> you know how excited she's going to be about the cold. can skate outside. no worries about not being cold enough for ice and snow around here. looking back through 2017, a couple of months that we did have that were cooler than average were mostly because of rain. we had 18 days with rainfall in may. so may finished up cooler than average. with more than an inch and a half above, july, it finished above average temperaturewise, our wettest month of the year by far. over 9 inches of rain in the month of july. it continued into august. as a result, august for a rare treat in washington, was cooler than average. and colder than average is the optimum script tore for the next 7 to 10 days. the polar jet is well down to our south. we're going to have the cold locked in here for a while now. couple

that's all coming up. let's go to our rob stallworth at wtop. >> my gosh, don't talk about snow. we don't need it right now. if you're traveling in virginia, the beltway is looking pretty good with no real problems. the earlier crash to eisenhower avenue is now cleared. all lanes have been reopened. northbound i-95 in virginia is the real sticking point. that's because of a car fire between route 1 and 606. all lanes are stopped there. that late-night car fire happened about 10:30 last night. otherwise, in maryland. 95 looks good both ways between the capitol beltway and the baltimore beltway. back to you. your time is 5:32. we're on top of the breaking news in prince george's county. chris lawrence at the live desk. what do you know? >> aaron, eun, police confirmed a fatal shooting in the hyattsville area. i'm told we can bring you a live picture from the

parkway and 20th avenue. you can see an incredible police presence there. a scary scene for families to wake up just a day after christmas. a fatal shooting. we're not sure if it involves someone who lived in the home or someone who came to the home. derrick ward is working to confirm more when prince george's county police at the scene. he'll be bringing you a lot more information and we'll stay on top of this story for you. eun, back to you. >> chris, thank you. it's time to check on your top stories. a smoke alarm is being credited for alerting a sleeping resident that their home was on fire. montgomery county officials say this was along cummings lane and chevy chase. it was badly damaged by fire. officials say it likely started in the living room. >> fairfax county fire crews will be back at the mt. vernon antique center this morning after an overnight fire there. flames broke out after 9:00 p.m. on richmond highway. that building was filled with antiques.

investigators will be searching for a cause today. this morning, two loudoun county sheriff's deputies are recovering after being shot by a suspect. the man accused of shooting them is facing two counts of attempted capital murder. the shooting happened christmas eve as they were responding to a call on hollow mountain place in sterling. douglas johnson, jr., pulled a gun on the deputy that they were trying to arrest him. the deputies are expected to be okay. here's a quick reminder, the day after christmas, metro rail and metrobus are operating on a normal schedule today. >> it is boxing day 2017. the day after christmas. just in time to use the new gift card. you can also search online for great deals. i find some of the best deals right after christmas. 5:34 right now. a maryland couple killed in a christmas eve plane crash in florida. she was a fourth grade teacher

her husband, peter worthington jr. was a law student. both died when her father's plane went down during fog. it crashed outside of tampa. it's not clear yet why the plane crashed. but other pilots at the airport thought it was too foggy to fly. christmas is barely over. we're talking about 5 1/2 hours. you may want to consider using the extra time you have to take down your tree. trees cause hundreds of fires inside people's home each year. you'll probably remember this fire, january of 2015. annapolis couple and four of their grandchildren died when their tree ignited their home. now the sister of one of the victims is making it her mission to remind others how to keep their holidays safe. >> i just don't want to see this tragedy happen to anyone else. my three cardinal rules are water your tree every day, unplug it overnight when it's not
