season but it's also the flu season. the centers for disease control list virginia as one of 12 states with high flu activity. the virginia county of health says flu rates have gone up throughout the state. they're worried about this year's strain of the flu because most vaccines don't prevent it. however, they still recommend that you get that flu shot this year. well, call it a sign of the times. some college students are actually majoring in marijuana. >> as more states legalize the drug, a growing number of college students are turning to the new major to help them prepare for a career in cannibus. they call it medicinal plant chemistry. legal issues prevent students from handling the weed. they will learn everything from gas and liquid chrome atography >> there's a whole lot of study

this morning. 5:02 just about now. good morning, everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm susan hogan in for eun yang. don't worry, we're not talking about any major accumulations but it could still impact or day. >> our crew is working for you to get you there safely. let's start with chuck bell. >> winter weather advisory until 11:00 a.m. for the far north parts of the d.c. area. loudoun county, frederick county. the broad view shows the deep moisture is way down to our south but there is a little bit of moisture here coming across west virginia and into the northern parts of the state of maryland here. not going to bring a whole lot of snow, but it might be enough to coat the ground here from about winchester to the northern parts of loudoun county, frederick maryland, upper montgomery county could see up to maybe half an inch or an inch.

very cold so anything that comes down will stick slightly. here's the advisory. in effect until 11:00 a.m. out of here by 8:00 a.m. may get to pull the advisory down a little bit early. for more on the current conditions in the great outdoors, let's go to samara who is in the great outdoors. >> reporter: yes, i am, chuck. let's get a look right now at the current feel-like temperatures. 26 degrees is what it feels like in washington, d.c. feeling like the teens up towards northern portions of maryland like hagerstown. if you have any plans to run any errands today, make sure you are bundled up. around 10:00 a.m. the roads may be slick if you're up towards frederick maryland, loudoun, howard, montgomery county. we are going to see improving conditions. a lot more sunshine by the afternoon. the wind is going to kick up around 4:00, 5:00 this evening. it's going to feel like the

let's get a check of the roads. >> thanks, folks. good morning to you. on the outer loop of the beltway through leesburg pike, getting a report of a broken down possibly along the right side. southbound route 1 in alexandria after huntington avenue. we had a crash. it's contained to the right side of the road. you stay left in order to get by. taking you to maryland and the baltimore washington park wear. looking pretty good as you travel southbound between the baltimore parkway and the capitol beltway with no reported issues. things looking pretty good on the roads so far with no real big problems. live, aaron, susan, back to you. we continue our team coverage of this morning's wintry weather with news 4's adam tuss. >> that's right. he's traveling on the roads for us. where are you right now, adam? >> reporter: right now susan on 270 heading up towards frederick. on frederick county and approaching downtown fredk.

going to be a major impact as far as anything that falls, but the road is so cold and the ground surface is so cold that anything that does fall could stick to the roads. they're on the side of the road standing by to spread any salt. obviously this won't be a plowable event. you have to get above two inches. for right now the roads moving well. just be aware that if you come across any precipitation, especially up here northern montgomery county, give yourself a little bit of extra time and caution if you see any sort of precipitation coming down. we'll fin to follow the roads to see if anything is falling. we'll report back to you guys. >> adam, thank you. so we're talking about our little bit of wintry weather. not so much compared to this stuff. this is what folks to our north

branch library and the rising generations day care center. right now we're working to find out who the victim is and if detectives have been able to determine why he was killed. we'll, of course, update you as soon as we learn more. back to you. >> a mother in prince gorges county says she was just trying to protect her children when she went to confront a peeping tom. she said the man appeared several times outside her home. the last time she and her husband took action. >> i have girls in my house. i ran outside with my knife and told him not to move and if he would move i would hurt him. >> she helped her husband hold the man until police got there. turns out they didn't have enough information to arrest the guy at that moment. the mother says she told the neighbors to look out for anything suspicious. officers are patrolling that area a little more. >> the

members of a local family held. the temple is at radepshalom. they made a stop in mexico. they were headed to the mayan ruins when their tour bus flipped over. her husband and son david were also injured. a total of 12 people were killed in that crash. how would you feel after spending four hours on a plane only to be sent right back to the airport terminal? that's exactly what happened to the passengers of a tokyo-bound flight last night. lax airport believes we're told to be ready for the flight's return after the crew discovered an unauthorized person on board. john legend and his wife chrissie teigen were on the flight. teaghan

different flight headed towards japan. a drawing in a closely watched virginia race is delayed. state election officials were scheduled to literally draw names from a bowl today after a ruling last week declared the race between democrat shelly simmons and republican david jantz si a tie. lawyers wanted a court to reconsider that ruling. they believe she beat jantzy in the 94th district race in newport news. if simons wins it will split control 50-50. we're following another close race. democrat joshua cole lost to republican thomas by 73 votes in his stafford district. our news partners at wtop will not contest it. cole will continue to support a federal eye leks system received

welcome back, folks. police in memphis think a shooting at a busy mall started with a fight. >> police were called to the wolf chase galleria around 7:00 last night. at least two people were injured and sent to the hospital. so far there are four people in custody in connection with that shooting. this is still an active investigation but police say the fight happened inside the mall and it led to the shooting outside in a restaurant parking lot. in california police officers are saying good-bye to one of their own in oakland. officer andrew kamaleri was killed on the job on christmas eve. he and his partner were rear ended by a suspected drunk driver leaving a party. that suspect was hurt. he's facing felony charges. that officer leaves behind a wife and three children. he was only 33 years old. this morning there's added pressure on north korea to stop testing ballistic missiles. the u.s. treasury department issued tough sanctio

both are heavily involved in kim jong-un's domestic missile program. the u.s. blocked them in any transactions with america. here at the live desk we're keeping an eye on breaking news close to home. right now d.c. police are investigating an early morning shooting. take a look at this new video. just getting into the newsroom from the scene. this happened in northeast d.c. police say a man was shot just in the last couple hours along bryant street. sort of near 18th street and loomis park. we're told the man who was shot is in critical condition. police say they're looking for a man wearing a black hat and all black clothing. we'll be keeping an eye on this story as it develops to see if we can get more information for you. aaron, back to you. 5:16 right now. learning more about the death of a young prince gorges county girl who was shot days before christmas. a young family member accidentally shot the

night. there were adults at that home when the shooting happened. no word on when or if any charges will be filed. two people tried to take advantage of shoppers looking for holiday deals selling fake macbook pro laptops. the plan went south when they tried selling one to an undercover cop. it happened at springfield mall. the plain clothes officer noticed the laptops did not look authentic and set up a meeting to buy one. that's when police arrested the 37-year-old caliente houston and kristin edmund. they found several fake laptops as well as drugs inside their car. a d.c. woman said they bumped her out of her seat.

gave her a five dollar. the congresswoman released a statement to the paper staying she didn't ask for anything exceptional or out of the ordinary. tells us at news 4 that the airline has not apologized for what happened. an injured bald eagle is on the road to recovery after getting rescued on christmas eve. charles county sheriff's office posted this picture on facebook of lieutenant jeff wood who is also a falconer. the person trained to handle birds. he was called to come rescue the eagle on sunday after someone found her on the side of the road. seeing somebody with an eagle. he scooped her up and took her to the rap torr

let's take a look at the feels like temperature. it feels like the 20s for us. as we head throughout the day it is not letting up. by this afternoon it will feel a lot like the teens as we head into the afternoon. road conditions could be a little slick in some areas, especially farther north where they are seeing some of those snowflakes. for more on that, let's send it in to chuck. >> light snow on the storm team 4 radar primarily from winchester, virginia, to the north side, leesburg, northern parts of montgomery county as well. there's that little sliver of snowflakes right there. they're going from west to east. they're slipping south a little bit so if you're driving the 270 corridor this morning, once you get above germantown and gaithersburg, a little better chance of seeing light snowflakes. not looking for a high impact event. the advisory for the highlighted counties. they may have to take that down before 11:00 a.m. i don't think this is going to last much past 7:00 or 8:00 a.m.

pretty clear for the most part in maryland but in virginia on the outer loop near leesburg park, we had a broken down. aaron, susan, back to you. >> 5:33 now. continuing with our team coverage on this weather alert day. >> news 4's transportation reporter adam tuss is on the roads right now. where are you at this point? >> reporter: right now, susan, we are at point of rocks maryland. right by the potomac river as you get ready to cross into loudoun county. not much falling in the way of anything at all. as a matter of fact, we haven't seen a single snowflake and we are driving around in frederick, been on 270. taking a look. the conditions are cold out here. the pavement is extremely cold. so anything that falls is going to stick and the road crews have been out in anticipation of that just in case anything does fall but, guys, let's not kid ourselves here. we are not missing this snowstorm. if anything, this could be a

driver. the driver slowed down but kept on going. police say they are looking for a blue car, possibly a honda. tiffany johnson, a mother and west education school employee is outraged that this could happen to someone who works to protect the children. >> we as a west community are just heart broken that someone who literally protects our children every day was injured and that no one has come forward. >> juwan is now at home recovering from a broken neck and pelvis. police don't have any suspects, they were able to take in a piece of the car's bumper that fell off for analysis. anyone with more information is asked to call police. d.c. is not a traffic resilient city apparently when it comes to gridlock. that's a new study from northeastern university. they define resilience as the il

>> i know. no relief in sight. good morning, folks. if you're just joining us, i want you to know we are under a winter weather advisory for the counties shaded in purple until 11:00 a.m. no major snow expected with this but enough that it could cause the roads to be slick. taking a look at the radar, we are seeing flakes come down in southern portions of frederick county right now as we head through the next couple of hours. the cold, it's not going anywhere. i need you to stick around so you can know how cold it's going to feel this afternoon. traveling on the beltway in virginia, the outer loop after route 7 leesburg. still broken down reported along the right side. southbound route 1 after huntington avenue, still a crash along the right side with police still on the scene south of the beltway. headed downtown on constitution avenue at 17th street, that crash quickly clears from the road and all your lanes have been reopened. that's the latest from the

just kind of ties in very well. we love it! you're watching "news 4 today." right now at 5:45. storm team 4 weather alert. cold temperatures continue and now you could see a little snow. >> we are out on the roads for you as you start your day working for you with live team coverage. first, we turn to politics. in a few days the new gop tax law goes into effect and a lot of americans still have a lot of questions. >> they do. news 4's edward lawrence is live for us on capitol hill to help break it all down. edward, let's start with paychecks. what can we expect in the new year? >> reporter: susan, you can expect a little more money from the tax cuts in your paycheck for most of the folks in the dmv, but a lot of people are choosing to push off

defer some income until next year to get percentages in the lower tax bracket. let's talk deductions. some of the deductions will be missing from the tax code next year, including tax preparation deductions, deductions for job hunting expenses. also deductions to unreimbursed employee expenses. finally charities. charities are a big deal. loopholes are closing for next year. many tax experts say if you want to get the charitable donation deducted, pay a little extra today or give a little extra items to have it deducted this year. >> edward, we know before the president left for florida for a special vacation he mentioned the infrastructure plan. any timetable when we could see more? >> no specific timetable that is his number one priority. he's started working on it but when he gets back he'll reach out to democrats to get them on board for an infrastructure

after the first of the year. >> edward lawrence, live for us on the hill this morning. edward, thank you. this new gop tax law bill will affect property taxes, too. >> because of that montgomery county is allowing homeowners to prepay their 2018 property taxes before the new year. now the law caps deductions for state, local, real estate taxes at $10,000. the hope is that some taxpayers will be able to deduct more by paying in advance. but there's no guarantee. >> they made that quite clear. the irs has not decided yet. >> in the face of that you're ready to -- >> to prepay it. i was given the opportunity to make the deduction. montgomery county is not the only place letting people prepay their 2018 taxes. take a look at this line. a picture from wtop. it shows a line of people trying to prepay yesterday in fairfax county. fairfax county has

prepayments for a decade. d.c. and howard county are giving residents the option this year as well. i'm chris lawrence here at the live desk. an officer here in the right place at the right time. a homicide in largo. police say they found a man shot to death inside the vehicle you're seeing right there. that tan suv. an officer was patrolling the area when he found the man around 9:00 or 10:00 last night. the suv was discovered in the area of capital lane and capital court. to put that in perspective it's near the largo kettering library and rising generations day care. we're still working to find out who the victim is and if detectives have been able to determine why he was killed. we'll update you as we learn more. aaron, back to you. >> 5:48 right now. new details on a family tragedy in restin. fairfax county police dispatch calls from a triple shong

the victim's daughter called 911 to report the crime. this is some of that call. >> caller said a 10-year-old male. caller is still upstairs with her boyfriend. >> shots fired. >> advising shots fired. >> now radio conversations between officers also revealed shots were fired after they arrived on the scene there. police found three people shot on the second floor of this home in restin. scott fricker and his wife buckley died there. the accused gunman is 17 years old. he's in the hospital with life threatening injuries. he is expected to be charged. his name has not been released at this point. one of the victim's mothers told news 4 the couple recently became concerned their daughter's boyfriend was part of the neonazis. breaking news yesterday morning. police say a homeowner shot and killed a man outside of his home

police do not believe the homeowner knew the man that was shot. detectives are reviewing surveillance video to see if the deadly shooting was caught on camera. sources tell news 4 that at this point the shooting appears to be justified. four ohio teenagers are now facing murder charges for allegedly slowing a sand bag off an over pass. the person who was hit by that sand bag died on friday. >> i was driving my car and i went underneath the road. i don't know what happened. my friend. i don't know what happened. my friend, he's not moving. >> so that is the frantic 911 call made by the person driving the car. 22-year-old marquise byrd was riding in. as you can hear in the call, byrd was seriously hurt when that sand bag crashed through the windshield last week. he died a few days later. the four boys facing murder charges are 13 and 14 years old. now in october another group of teens allegedly killed a man by throwing rocks off an overpass on a portion of that same

michigan. crossing the street in bethesda will soon get easier for pedestrians. montgomery county's first all pedestrian traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of arlington road at bethesda avenue earlier next year. the signal stops traffic in all directions and allows people to cross at all four crosswalks at the same time. they will test the signal as part of a pilot project. a white christmas has kind of turned into a winter nightmare for some folks in erie, pennsylvania. they received 60 inches of snow. apparently it's still coming down. the last time that erie got this much snow, it took 13 days to reach 15 inches. all of this weather is making it hard to get home from the official vacations. the airport is expected to be
