until tomorrow morning. storm team 4 is working for you this evening. doug kammerer is kicking off from the storm center. are there days that we are going to be suffering from this? >> in the next ten days, we've got seven that i believe are below freezing, right on through next week and starting off the new year on extremely frigid numbers. tomorrow is going to be an incredibly cold day. let's take a look and show you what we're dealing with now. you saw flurries on the camera shot. flurries going on in parts of northern virginia but the main system is off to the south and east. in hagerstown, 3 below zero. the wind continues to move in. we're in for a very cold night tonight and bitter windchills right on through tomorrow morning. and really all day long tomorrow. we're going to talk about our snow chances. they are not great but we'll tak

year. some of the coldest numbers that we've seen in a long time. much more in 10, 15 minutes. it could be worse, you could be living in erie, pennsylvania, where they are still trying to dig out after that record-breaking amount of snow. five feet has fallen there just since christmas. >> and cold is crippling chicago, temperatures hovering around zero. it's so cold that you can see steam in michigan and the chicago river. and skiers in colorado are enjoying the fresh powder. the heavy snow is pretty but it's also dangerous because much of the high country is now under an avalanche warning. it's only a matter of time before a significant snow does fall in our area. be prepared. download the nbc washington app right now to get the weather

>> new remarks from a close family member of the teen accused in a horrific double homicide. the 17-year-old is in critical condition after allegedly shooting scott fricker and his wife buckley kuhn-fricker in their reston, virginia home. he then turned the gun on himself. david culver is outside the family's home in reston. what have you learned today about the suspect's past? >> reporter: we got a lot new information, pat, that we gathered as we started the day at the other end of fairfax county where the teen suspect lives. the suspect, we know his name but we're not releasing it because he's a juvenile, for one, and police have not formally charged him. he's still in the hospital in critical condition. whether en when we went to that home, we

interviewed a woman who is very close to the suspect. she's a relative. she tells me that the suspect is mentally ill. this home sits on a quiet street. i walked up wanting to ask the teen suspect's family what might have motivated this shooting, were there warning signs that might have been missed. a woman, who's a very close family member, tells me she feels horribly for the victims, the fricker and kuhn families. the 17-year-old got into their home and scott buckley found them in their daughter's bedroom. police say the teen then shot and killed the couple before shooting himself. >> "caller advising her mother and father were shot. caller is still upstairs with her boyfriend." . shots fired. >> the suspect dated the couple's daughter for a couple months and they hadea

the boy was promoting naziism on the boy's media account. >> my daughter found out about it this past week and forbid their daughter to see him again. >> reporter: "the washington post" reports that back in october, neighbors found a swastika mowed into this field across from the family's home. >> i think it got covered up very quickly, i guess. somebody mowed the lawn and tried to take care of it. >> reporter: the teen suspect suffers from mental illness, she says. here we are five days after this tragedy. you can see behind me at the couple's home a growing memorial. in fact, about an hour ago, more people coming out in the cold to lay flowers down remembering the victims here. pat, wendy? >> such a tragic story. thank you. two cases months apart now appear connected. first, a construction

later a teenager is found dead. in that 13 gang members are at the center of these incidents. mark segraves was the first to report this connection between the cases. he's in silver springs this evening at the lot where this all started. back in october, there were houses on this lot that had to be taken down for purple line construction. when one of the purple line employees came into the house, he was confronted by members of the ms-13. the purple line employee was not harmed but he was surrounded by four men and at least one had a gun and another had a machete struck to his leg. he quickly called police but insisted that he would remain anonymous. inside they found

honoring the st. of death and a skeleton hanging from the ceiling. four members were arrested, including the three men pictured here. then, on christmas eve, one of the suspects not far from where we're standing was found murder inside this apartment building. 18-year-old jose herera was found shot to death just two days after he was released from jail on the previous incident. police do not have any suspects in herera's murder. a spokesman for the purple line don't believe gang members have been targeting their employees or their properties. mark segraves, news4. a razor-thin race for the virginia house remains up in the air tonight. the three-judge panel will decide what happens next. supporters of

fineman were outside of the courtroom. they are signs imploring them to throw out the ballot. if it's not thrown out, it will be decided by drawing names from a bowl. the balance of power is also sat stake. democrats and republicans will share power in the state's lower chamber if fineman wins. the first weekend in january, president trump will host house and senate gop leaders at camp david. trump will unveil his infrastructure plan in january and the president believes the issue can unite republicans and democrats. also, he plans to push for welfare reform in the new year. in a tweet he said, changes are needed because, quote, people are taking advantage of the system. we're working for you, helping to navigate all of the tax changes coming in this new year. o

their property taxes before that deduction cap goes into place. residents in the district, fairfax, montgomery and howard counties are allowed to pay early. chris gordon is live in fairfax to tell you what you need to know about this. chris? >> reporter: these fairfax county residents are taking advantage of extended hours here at the government sender to prepay those property taxes. the tax collectors are working until 6:30 tonight, tomorrow and friday night. and check or credit card at the counter. >> it looks like -- >> yes. >> reporter: drop boxes are eventually located around the government center for those who don't want to wait in line. >> you can go online where we have instructions in terms of writing and sending in a

we have an address and to who it needs to be sent to. you can also pay by certified funds in either the form of a cash or check or money order. in addition, you can pay electronically, through a transaction from your bank. >> reporter: it's the first day residents have the opportunity to prepay their property taxes. long lines wind through the hallway of the department of treasury in rockville. the wait is between 40 minutes and an hour. >> i was told it would probably be a good idea to go ahead and do this. >> reporter: even though the irs hasn't said whether the deduction would be recognized? >> yes. as long as they don't charge me double, i'll be okay. >> available here in rockville, if you want to pay by mail, you can get the formç online. >> they are on my department's website, the

department of finance. >> reporter: d.c. residents can prepay their property taxes online or at any wells fargo bank in the district. tomorrow, the prince george's county council will meet to consider allowing residents there to also prepay property taxes. if the measure passes, prince george's county will then announce the procedures it will put into effect. now, keep in mind, all of these jurisdictions are working against a december 31st year-end deadline and that's coming up on sunday. we are monitoring and following all of these developments and we'll keep you updated. wendy, back to you. >> when do we know if the irs will accept this next year? i mean, when do we know if the irs says prepaying it, you get to deduct it? >> reporter: well, that's a good question. we don't know now. nobody's indicated when that decision will be made. probably after the first of the year. >> all right. tha

we're staying on top of this bitter blast of cold air and temperatures are in the 20s now. it's only going to get colder from here and that's not the only winter weather we're tracking. storm team 4 will tell us what the chances are of getting snow later in the week. doug will join us here in a few minutes. but flu is surging here in our area. doctors are warning this is a particularly bad year for this virus. >> this shows activity map in

maryland. >> doctors will tell you what to do if do you get the flu. >> does there seem to be a lot of this around these days? the peak season for influenza is upon us. it goes from december to february and it's already on the rise. in fact, in maryland and virginia, the cdc calls it widespread. the cdc breaks down flu levels into five categories, no activity, sporadic, local, that's where d.c. is, regional and widespread. maryland and virginia are among 23 states reporting widespread flu. did you get your flu shot? >> yes, i did. >> reporter: did you? >> we did and so far we're doing well. >> reporter: is the shot helping the flu stay at bay? >> the vaccine is obviously not 100% effective. in fact, this year it's

been in the past but it's still strongly recommended that everyone receive the vaccine so we can decrease the total number of cases of flu. >> reporter: there's already been more than 7,000 confirmed cases of the flu across the u.s. and double than this time amount last year. the cdc recommends anyone over the age of six months to get a flu shot, especially the elderly and children. did you get your flu vaccine? >> yes. >> reporter: how about here? >> we did. >> reporter: nobody's been sick this season? >> knock on wood, no, not yet. >> reporter: remember to wipe down surfaces and wash your hands. a lot. last year, there was a 42% effective rate. erika gonzalez, news

out of those who have had the flu, most say they got the flu shot. and here's another good reminder for you. show you how fun life is in the wintertime. you know when you leave your car running so it warms up? don't do that. fairfax county police arrested these two guys for stealing a car a few days before christmas. the homeowner says she left it running in her driveway, didn't lock the doors and when she came back, it was out of there. officers located the car a few blocks away and took the suspects into custody. the one on the left is wearing a shirt that says "trust me." we all thought that was funny. not only is car warming, warming up your car dangerous, it could also be illegal. in maryland, cars are only allowed to idle for up to five minutes unless you're stuck in traffic or have mechanical issues. in the district, gas or

minutes if the temperature is below 32 degrees. there's also a hefty $1,000 fine if you idle longer. and in virginia, it only applies to public vehicles. i don't know how they enforce that. >> i see you warming up over there. >> they want to warm up their car because it's so cold. >> yeah. they are coming with automatic starters, which really does help to get the car up and running. it's going to be one of those times where you're going to need that or maybe you want to get the car started up and you head back in for a few minutes and get the car warming because temperatures in the next few days will not get above freezing. friday and saturday is the warmest day. only for a high of 36 on friday. right now, it is frigid. temperatures 27 degrees. wind out of the north at 15 miles per hour.

the big stories we're following on this wednesday, a close family member of that teenager who teenager who's accused of killing that couple in reston. she said the suspect is suffering from mental illness. scott and buckley fricker were killed in their home. the suspect was dating their daughter. a spike in the number of cases in this region for the flu. doctors tell us the vaccine is not as effective as it has been in past years. the best way to protect yourself is wipe down surfaces and wash your hands. we're in for a frigid night. temperatures are in the 20s now and that doesn't count the windchill. it's so cold that the district is it taking special precaution to use the homeless to more warmer places. and it's going to feel like the single digits when you step

jail. >> scott macfarlane has the story and video that you'll only see on news4. >> reporter: a man is accused of trying to smuggle $12,000 in phony $100 bills. news4 was there when customs and border protection officers pulled him into a holding cell and then pulled every item from salazar's checked baggage. a special agent said diaz salazar was knowingly trying to smuggle the fake money from colombia. they say they questioned and searched international passengers in part to help stop smugglers. >> they are looking for narcotics and currency

year's eve and the good news is that metro will be opened late. the bad news is, you have to pay for your ride this year. transportation reporter adam tuss helps you make your plans. >> reporter: three extra hours of metro rail service for new year's eve. it happens on sunday this year and metro normally closes at 11:00 p.m. but now for new year's eve, metro will be open until 2:00 a.m. just a couple of days away until 2018 and metro riders making their plans for celebrating safely. >> the first thing i think about whenever i go out for new year's, yeah, is where we're going and how we're going to go there and back. >> reporter: in recent years, miller and coors has sponsored late-night rail service so it was a free trip for riders after midnight but that's not happening this year. that means you'll have to pay to catch a ride on metro. this rider says she's thankful that the late-night service is

>> i think it's great to provide people with an opportunity without having to drive and to be safe catching the metro. >> reporter: here's what you need to know. metro will be opened until 2:00 in the morning on new year's eve. there won't be any track work, so that's good news. and customers will have to pay to catch a late-night ride. security is going to be keeping an eye on everything and even though the rail system will be opened until 2:00 in the morning, the last train times vary by station and be sure to check the last time of the train that leaves the station. now, metro says last year well over 13,000 riders took advantage of late-night rail service for new year's eve. so plenty of people rely on this option. back to you. d.c. water is trying to find ways to lower customers' bills by getting into the invention business. a team of researchers are looking to find ways to solve problems and create new ideas for d.c. water to test and

well, when there's five feet of snow on the ground, a snowplow is not enough. bobcats are digging out the snow. ron allen is in erie to explain why the town is about to break another record. >> reporter: it's a snowstorm for the ages. there's an incredible amount of snow on the ground. 60 inches, five feet in some places. people say they haven't seen a storm this bad in 50 years. it's not over yet because there's more snow in the forecast. they could break a record and have 100 of inches fall in the month of december. we'll have more coming up in a live report shortly. >> we're having a bobcat discussion. >> those are the little ones. >> yeah, for the sidewalks and

we did have a good video at 4:00. you need it all when you get five feet of snow. >> what are we going to need on new year's? >> here's what we're going to need for our snow. nothing. today it was really pretty. it snowed for one to two hours. it was light snow. it didn't accumulate because it was coming down so lightly across our region. next couple of days, we got a chance for more but the big deal is the cold. 27 degrees and dropping. this is the temperature, not the windchill. by 11:00, it's 19 degrees. it's going to be a cold night tonight. the windchill is going to be a bigger factor. 7 in hagerstown. 18 in leesburg. 15 is the current windchill in the d.c. metro area. winds are a factor right on through early tomorrow. stillç seeing some snow shower and flurries down to the south and around stafford a

woodbridge. but that's really it. it's part of a bigger system that came through earlier. again, the bulk of the energy has stayed down to the south and east. that's the trend over the next couple of days because of an area of high pressure and a deep trough of low pressure. that allows all of the cold air to come on down and they have a better chance of seeing snow in central georgia than we do here over the next four to seven days. so not a great chance with this next system. it will be farther to our south and east. what everybody gets is the cold. that will set us up for a cold day tomorrow and even colder for new year's. let's go over to amelia. >> putting the forecast together earlier in the week, looking at the numbers i was thinking clam someh wd

7 in washington. 5 in frederick. 8 degrees in culpeper. the one saving grace tomorrow, at least we have plenty of sunshine in the forecast. your feels-like temperatures through january 1st, it's going to be during the afternoon when it will feel the warmest. tomorrow afternoon, feeling about 20 degrees. friday and saturday, our windchill temperatures are around 25. and then another arctic blast moves in on sunday with feels-like temperatures around 15 and monday starting off 2018 only feeling about 5 to 10 degrees afterwards and that is during the afternoon hours. so if you have plans to be out on new year's eve, take a look at your planner. temperatures in the 20s and falling into the teens by midnight. with a bit of a breeze outdoors during the evening hours, it will feel like we're in the teens and then during the day on january 1st, a high of 24 with a bit of a breez

chrissy teigen. she live tweeted to her followers about the incident as it unfolded writing, "a flying first for me. four hours into an 11-hour flight and we are turning around because we have a passenger who isn't supposed to be on this plane." passengers were told that someone boarded a plane with a united airlines ticket. we are on ana. and trademark tongue in cheek, she added, so basically the boarding scanner just registers to nowhere ana released a statement overnight making no specific mention of a ticket from united airlines but explains the incident this way. during the flight, the cabin crew became aware that one of the passengers boarded the incorrect flight and notified the pilot. as part of the airline security procedure, the pilot decided to return to the originating airport where the passengers with disembarked.
