reopened last night after more than 5 feet of snow came down in less than two days. >> this area is used to seeing a lot of snow but this week it set records even there. it's seen more snow than it usually does in an entire winter. keep in mind the cold isn't even that bad compared to the midwest. my family in michigan has been complaining for days. folks in chicago and minnesota reported 35 to 40 degrees below zero, that's before accounting for the wind. those conditions, frostbite can set in, in less than 30 minutes. now to overnight breaking news, eight people, including a police officer, are now in the hospital after a car crash on centreville road near frying pan. you can see the front end of that pickup truck, significant damage to a minivan as well. officers were chasing a suspect who

carjacked a pickup truck. the suspect hasn't been identified but he will be facing multiple charges. now to the daring chase in germantown. it was the store owner in pursuit this time. when he heard his shop was ronde at begun point, he went into action. it started last night in germantown. one of his employees called him and told him the store was being robbed. he lives across the street. he rushed to the store just as the thieves were leaving. he followed them. >> my instinct got to me, just follow them. went through 270 southbound. >> still shocked and relieved that it happened and relieved that police were able to catch those thieves. we're also following breaking news. a lawsuit filed to stop the

certification of democrat doug jones a the winner of alabama's u.s. senate race. moore says there needs to be a fraud investigation and a new election. alabama's secretary of state says he sees no evidence of fraud and that jones will be certified today. jones defeated moore by about 20,000 votes back on december 12th. it was the first time a democrat has won to seat in decades. right now, more than 2 dozen people are okay after a nightmare commute in new york city. this ferry was carrying 27 people last night when it was stuck on a sandbar for four hours. adding to the misery, the water was so shallow that commuters had to evacuate into small inflatable boats. the second time in a month commuters were stranded by that particular ferry service. you want to bundle up if you're going to the military bowl. two local teams going head to head. uva will take on navy in

the federal government focusing on vegas a lot this year after what happened a few months back. they changed the special assessment rating to level 1 indicating the possibility of terrorism for criminal activity. the las vegas sheriff insists there are no known threats and extra security is a precaution. wednesday, a normal day at disneyland until the power went out leaving some families standing in long line. employees had to escort some guests off rides. about a dozen attractions were -- there was a problem with the transformer. no one was hurt and power was fully restored later in the afternoon. a father wanted to teach his little girl about the game of golf. they both learned a thing or two about friendship and

people first warranty. this morning, new insight on a teenager accused of killing his girlfriend's parents directly from the young man's family. the 17-year-old who shot his father and then shot himself, he's in critical condition. news 4's david culver is working the story from outside the family's home in reston. >> the home sits on a

lorton street. i walked up wanting to ask the suspect's family what might have motivated the shooting. were there warning signs that might have been missed. a woman who is a very close family member to the suspect opened the door. she wasn't comfortable going on camera. sobbing, she told me she feels horribly for the victims, both families. last friday morning, the fairfax county police say the 17-year-old got into the fricker home in reston. buckley found them in their daughter's bedroom. the teen shot and killed the couple before shooting himself. >> caller advising her mother and father were shot. caller is still upstairs with her boyfriend. >> shots fired. >> advising shots fired. >> the suspect dated the couple's daughter for several months. they had recently found out he was promoting naziism on his social media accounts. >> they found out about the nazi stuff this past week and

stay warm. how are you doing out there, aimee? >> reporter: hey, guys. good morning. cold. not going to lie. let me tell you, it is pretty brutal out here. chuck has been saying the temperatures and windchill makes it feel like zero. it certainly does. d.c. is hunkering down, activated their cold emergency plan last night allowing for extra shelters to be open like the community of christ church behind me in northwest. this is in effect until tuesday. it's time like these you have to be mindful of the homeless and anybody else vulnerable, such as the elderly or pets. d.c. wants you to call 311 if you see anybody who looks like they need help. mayor muriel bowser talked about the importance of staying v vigila vigilant. >> neighbors need to check on neighbors. not only for people on the street, but neighbors who may be in their homes without heat, who may be turning on stoves to stay
