first arctic air doesn't mean you'll survive the next. >> now for those who like to warm up the car before you get in, be careful. in maryland and d.c., vehicles are only allowed to idle for up to five minutes. you could be hit with a fine of $1,000 if you're caught. virginia's idling laws apply to commercial or public vehicles. here's a silver lining. at least we're not digging out of this mess out of the wirnt weather. erie, pennsylvania, airport just reopened after more than 5 feet of snow came down in less than 48 hours. crews have been working nonstop to clear the runway since christmas day. this area is used to seeing a lot of snow. but it's set records. it's seeing more snow now than in an entire winter. even though the cold we're feeling here, it isn't that bad compared to the midwest. people in chicago and minnesota reported temperatures 35

degrees below zero. you guys, that's before the windchill. those conditions, frostbite can set in, in 30 minutes. six minutes after the hour. we turn to breaking news we've been following this morning. eight people are recovering after a police chase results in a serious crash. you can see the damage here in this video from chopper 4. >> that's right. news 4's adam tuss is near the scene of the crash in herndon. what do we know so far? >> reporter: that's right, susan. we're right here where that crash happened last night. it was a multiple scene incident here. meaning that this happened over the course of minutes and hours where this whole thing developed. you can see some of the crash remnants still here in the middle of frying pan road at centreville road. this is a look at the crash video from last night. what happened here was that a man knocks on a door of a nearby ho

assault with a child. fleece in a car. goes to a nearby shopping center. hits a pickup truck in his stolen car, then carjacks that pickup truck. comes here, races away from police and gets into the crash of frying pan road and centreville road. at the crash here, he hits a van with search peop7 people inside. the man tries to runaway out of the car when police nab him and there's an altercation between the police and the suspect. this is something that played out over multiple areas here. the 7 people in the van, one of the people ejected was a juvenile and was flown to the hospital in critical condition. that is the most serious injury out of all of this. this is something that police had to follow over multiple locations until it came to an end here at this intersection where the crash happened. back to you. >> so bizarre, adam. i got to go back to the assault part of this. what do we know about the kid assaulted and the

any, between the child and the adult, the suspect here? >> reporter: that's what police are trying to figure out this morning, aaron. they're trying to figure out why that initial assault happened and why he was going to this home in the flirs plairst place. that's the key piece of information which we don't know. why this altercation happened with the juvenile at the house in the first place that led to the incident, we'll have to see as the details come out today. >> adam tuss live in herndon for us. adam, thank you. eight minutes after the hour. two people rob a pizza joint at gunpoint and lead police on a chase. the person who followed the robbers first was the owner of the restaurant. he says he even knew it was dangerous. this all started at tasty 5 pizza in germantown. one of the employees called the owner and told him the store was being robbed. the owner lives across the street and did the only thing that came to mind. got into

the channel. police had to use sticks to keep the rescue rafts from getting stuck. they didn't get back to brooklyn until six hours after they left. chris, thank you. more breaking news now. roy moore filed a lawsuit to stop today's certification of democrat doug jones as the winner of alabama's u.s. senate race. moore's attorney argues there needs to be a fraud investigation and a new election. alabama's secretary of state says he's seen no evidence of fraud and jones will be certified today. jones defeated moore by 20,000 votes in the special election. it's the first time a democrat has won that seat in decades. the current powerball jackpot is at $384 million. there was no winner in last night's drawing. there's still hope. but you still have time to buy a ticket for tomorrow's mega millions jackpot. take a look at the excitement inside uni

the time now is 5:25. the next story sounds a little like the plot of a made for tv movie. but it involves a real police officer and several crimes. this happened in bush kill township, pennsylvania. a woman accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy. her husband, who is a police officer, found out and tried to cover up the crime. now the woman is also accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill her husband, the police officer, after he blackmailed her over the covered-up crime. the police officer pled guilty to criminal coercion, the wife is awaiting trial. a st. louis mother is thanking the people who protected her baby after a carjacking. >> that's right. it happened on christmas day. she left her 6-month-old son in her running car and checked to make sure she locked the door of her home. someone then took off with her car and the baby. the baby was

5:45. we're working to prepare you for the changes coming with the new tax law. a lot of americans are wondering if this new law repealed obamaca obamacare. the simple answer is no. >> however, the new tax law changes it in a big way. edward lawrence is live for us on capitol hill to explain. gorge, edward. >> good morning, susan. it repeals the original mandate within the affordable care act. now, that mandate required all of us to have health insurance or pay a tax penalty. the reason that part can be repealed is because it lives within the tax code. so when the republican tax plan passed, it removed that mandate. just that specific mandate. >> edward, does the president think he's going to be able to repeal all of the affordable care act next year? >> you know, aaron, that's something that the president wants to do. he said numerous times that he believes that health care will be overhauled on twitter. even saying that republicans and

fix the health care system. the president, again, saying a few days ago that he believes health care should be a top priority in the next year. he believes it will get done. we'll have to see if republicans or democrats come together to actually do it. >> edward lawrence on the hill this morning. edward being thank you. a last minute rush to prepay 2018 property taxes before the end of this year may have been for nothing for hundreds of homeowne homeowners. it will cap property tax deductions at $10,000. many homeowners are trying to pay their tax bill before the end of 2017 hoping to get a larger deduction. in order to deduct the prepayment, taxpayers need to pay and have their 2018 property tax assessments completed before monday. assessments have not happened for most local counties and cities. that includes the entire state of maryland which doesn't release assessments until july. in fairfax county a lot of people were in line
