we are following several breaking stories, as a matter of fact, right now at 11:00, including a deadly apartment fire in the bronx where at least 12 are dead. the new york city fire

tragedy of historic proportions. also tonight a fire closer to home for some firefighters dealing with the cold. keeping themselves warm with evacuations tonight. and a highway shooting, this time on the maryland/d.c. line. the possibility that he was dumped along the side of the road. flames tore through that apartment building, killing 12 people, including a baby. good evening, everyone. i'm leon harris. several others are injured, four critically right now. this fire raged through a five-story walk-up this evening. about 700 firefighters raged through the bronx zoo. helping people stranded outside on a frigid night is the red cross. >> the fire had already escalated from one apartment to two, two almost to

all i see is a bunch of kids in the fire escape cold, with no jacket, no pajamas, no nothing. >> search of the building continues, so we know that even though it's horrible to report that 12 are dead already, we may lose others as well. >> and with that being the case, obviously a lot still to come on this breaking story. look for updates on the nbc washington app and tomorrow morning on news4. we sent a chopper over an apartment fire in montgomery tonight. not as serious as the one in new york. a two-alarm fire did force people to evacuate the building in the aspen hill area. over 100 firefighters responded to that scene. they rescued one person. brought in a number of medical buses to keep people warm outside. we saw several children outside in the cold and other residents in their heavy coats and hats. no word yet on what caused that fire.

to the scene to help those families. with that in mind, let's turn to our weather now. storm team chief meteorologist doug kammerer. cold here. >> the average temperature this time of year is 45. we were at 25 today. that is the coldest day so far in 2017. we only got a couple days left to tie as the coldest day in the d.c. area o. one day back in january it was just as cold. 10 degrees, 4 in ocean city. some incredible cold still around our region and that's going to last right on through not just the next couple of days but most likely the next two weeks. this is something we're looking at. a cold pattern just locked in here. it gets even colder than we are today for new year's. we're going to talk about the new year. i'll take you through that. then our snow chances still increasing.

well. lots to talk about today weatherwise. unfortunately, all cold related. see you back here in a few minutes. two shootings today along two busy highways affected the evening commute for drivers in d.c., maryland and virginia. the most recent along 295 in bladensburg just across the d.c. line. someone found a man shot there tonight and that situation impacted traffic on 295 and new york avenue. news4's shamari stone is live now with prince georges county police. >> reporter: right now prince georges police are investigating this as a homicide. i told you about this on facebook a couple hours ago. at that time the man was in critical condition. he was pronounced dead a couple hours later. around 6:20 this evening, they received a call of an unresponsive man on the shoulder of

maryland. officers tell us when they looked at the man, they found at least one bullet hole to the upper body. medics drove him to a hospital in critical condition. the man has no identification on his body. police are investigating to see if he was pushed out of a moving car on the highway. crime scene investigators searched for evidence. a police spokesperson did not tell us if they found anything that can help solve this mystery. detectives urge anyone with information, if you are on i-295 near that exit and saw something suspicious, call prince georges county police. here at prince georges police county headquarters, i'm shamari stone, news4. now we turn to the other highway shooting, and there's no word other than bizarre to describe this. shots fired at police and then a crash in stafford county. police said this all started with the suspect oo

their home. news4's jackie bensen has more with that side of the story. >> reporter: neighbors tell us the couple had only lived here a few weeks. they were quiet and kept to themselves. >> i heard a pop but i thought it was some children hitting the window. >> reporter: lavinia montez soon learned the sound she heard around 11:00 a.m. was a gunshot. stafford county deputies found one of her neighbors dead and learned the woman's husband fled the scene in a black surks v. >> we just had new neighbors, only been here two weeks, and we didn't know anything. we didn't know it was them. it's sad. i feel bad for the children. >> reporter: minutes after the deputies broadcast a lookout for the husband's vehicle, a virginia state trooper spotted the suv headed north on i-95. he spotted for a few miles. a witness who asked that we not identify him says the suspect then stopped

fire. he continued on, causing more crashes along the way. >> stopped his car in the middle of 95 in the center lane, shot the officer in the left lane, stood near his door and shot the officer. >> reporter: one bullet went through a state trooper's windshield. he only escaped by ducking to his left. another bullet went into a sheriff deputy's cruiser window. >> straight through the windshield on the driver's side and right into the headrest. >> reporter: the suspect kept going north. sheriff satisfy deputiid he w t sheriff's deputies believe the man shot himself in the head, causing a catastrophic wreck which closed the highway for hours. >> reporter: the investigation into this string of crimes continues. jackie bensen, news4. a man who was about to start college is now

three murders. police believe he shot and killed two men this week. back in august, jamahri sydnor was killed near her northeast home. prosecutors say the suspect shot her because she, quote, got in the way. >> she was supposed to be getting ready for a wedding and she got in his way. my heart stopped. my stomach felt like it was going to throw up, completely disgusted. you know, he killed my baby. >> mayfield now charged with more than just those three murders. officers arrested him wednesday for suspected armed robbery, and they think he could be responsible for several more crimes. federal prosecutors say hackers took control of d.c. police surveillance cameras just days before president trump's inauguration. now two of those hackers are in custody in

the attack infected computers on campus. the hack was discovered on january 12. a federal complaint was unsealed today and it said the cameras were unable to record video for several days. it was a major concern for the secret service, but the problem was resolved before inauguration day. an investigation determined that no one was actually harmed by that dysfunction. alabama said doug jones is the official winner of the state's senate race, but roy moore isn't going away quietly. today he called the election a fraud. the comments came shortly after the state declared jones the winner. moore said experts across the country believed the election was fraudulent. the republican said he stood for the truth and has no regrets. moore filed a legal complaint demanding a new election. the state, though, is dismissing his claims. >> this election has been conducted with the utmost integrity,

secure, credible. >> jones' 20,000-vote win margin makes him the first democrat to seat in alabama in a quarter century. moore was plagued with sexual misconduct charges. the woman best known for playing on "the dick van dyke show" has died. she got started as a child actor in 1963. she posed with her mom on christmas saying, you're never too old to miss your mother. rosemarie was nominated for two emmy awards. she received a star on the hollywood walk of fame in 1981. she died in los angeles. she gave us a lot of laughs. a

house and then stole a car. police chased her into herndon and that's where she crashed into a van with a family of five inside. two officers were hurt when they tried to arrest bensen, but they are going to be okay. new tonight a gruesome discovery inside a burning car in the district. someone reported a fire around 7:20 p.m. tonight on ridge road southeast in the fort dupont area. police arrived on the scene and found a body in the vehicle. a neighbor said she heard five to ten shots. it is now under investigation. news4 scott mcfarland reports that this trooper's case is just one of many dui cases in which a number of police are victims. >> he remembers some of the

>> i saw bright lights, which that was probably from the ambulance. >> and the other car. >> as i saw him hit the center median coming out onto the street, that's when everything just went blank. >> but trooper solomon flash said most of what happened to him in june in forestville along route 4 and the beltway is foggy. >> i don't even know how i got out of the car, but i'm just glad everybody was able to walk away from that incident. >> reporter: a suspected drunk driver knocked the trooper out. it took several weeks to recover from the concussion. he he's now returned to work patrolling the same stretch of his route where he was nearly killed. and again he's handling cases of drunk drivers. >> reporter: maryland police records show eight troopers were struck by drunk drivers this year, including one from cecil county who was hit twice. that trooper from

back on the job. the state trooper's office says they're concerned about the number of rising incidents. >> it's not just a danger to police officers but to a loss of life. or even yourself. >> he's glad to be back. has your mentality changed? >> actually, no. i thought it would change, but i've always had the same drive to try to stop people who were drinking and driving. i've always had the same mentality before and after the accident. >> reporter: scott mcfarland, news4. heads up for maryland residents. if your smoke detector runs on those small batteries, time is running out to replace it. you are required to have a built-in battery that lasts ten years. if they find a home that doesn't have it, they could face a misdemeanor

new york city is working to keep people safe as they ring in the new year. there is no specific threat at this time but they're still implementing added measures. the attempted suicide bombing on september 11 took place just steps away from times square in an underground walkway. >> the difference in this year and last year is we're putting out more officers with sniper capabilities. there will be much more the public will see and the public won't see. >> up to a million people expected to crowd that area on new year's eve. here's hoping the only thing they have to protect themselves from is the weather. >> the cold is going to be one thing. i'm really predicting the temperature up there at that time the wind chill between zero and 5 below. i think it's going to be below zero. it's a wind tunnel coming through there on times square. it's going to be the same

we're talking about equally as cold numbers as we move on through the night, not just tonight but really over the next two weeks, guys. get ready. continue to wear the hats, the gloves, the scarves, the coats, whatever you got. you'll need them the next few days. even though tomorrow will be slightly warmer than today. right now clear skies. that's allowed the temperature to drop to 19. yes, that gives us a wind chill of 10 degrees right now. these are not wind chills, these are actual temperatures. down to 9 in mart iinsburg, gaithersburg 19. we'll put those digits in the single digits and low teens. no snow right now but i'm tracking a storm system that is bringing some snow. it's right here just to our west. that's not going to provide us with any snowfall. what it is going to do, though, give us a little bit of cloud cover overnight tonight, but then tomorrow helping to warm temperatures a little bit

then i'm tracking a system back to the west. that one will come through our region on saturday, and that one does have a better chance of some snow and i'll time that out for you. tomorrow some snow, and tomorrow night the clouds move out ahead of our storm system, and on saturday starting to see some snow around parts of the area, and by 5:00 or 6:00 a.m., notice snow, and it could be coming down here at a pretty good clip, at least some light to moderate snow around the area. by 8:00, it's out of here in most areas and then continuing to move to areas like baltimore and philadelphia. they'll get a bit more than we will. out west we'll see that system as it pivots through. it will bring back some storms in the afternoon. what else will it bring back? even colder air on sunday. the cold is locked in here. we've been watching these storms travel to our south, especially the last couple. the next one will

latest computer models where they had it going out to sea now trying to bring the jet stream back, the area of low pressure back, the cold is still in place and that sets the stage for a cold front next week. will it stay out to sea? will it come close enough where we get a good amount of snow? something i'll be on top of for you the next couple days, i'm sure. there are some out there that are giving amounts. i would not do that until a couple days ahead of time. sun and clouds not as cold. not terrible in the afternoon but a very frigid start. the cold air, though, after that snow on saturday comes right back in. breezy and just plain cold on saturday -- rather, on sunday into monday. 24 on monday morning. that would be the coldest start we've seen in quite a while. the coldest temperature in 2017 was 25. today 2018 starts off even colder. 24 degrees, and guess what, it could be even colder next week. i've got
