yesterday. 21 degrees right now in the district. it's 18 dulles. 16 gaithersburg. manassas 17. in clinton, in the middle teens for winchester and martinsburg. we could see a few passing snow flurries today. we have mostly cloudy skies around. but it's really overnight and into tomorrow when we have snow coming and we do expect the accumulations across the area too. for your friday, not as cold as yesterday. yesterday, we had a high of 25 degrees. today a high of 34 degrees. but most of your morning hours for our suburbs especially, will be in the teens. we'll take a closer look at the snow for saturday coming up and your new year's forecast. but now over to dave for a look at the traffic. >> a whole lot of nothing to talk about. if you're going to hit the road, we're working the roads. look at 95 heading northbound at 395. there are no delays from quantico toward the

very light traffic. that's how it's been this week. really light morning rush hours. the afternoons have been much, much busier by contrast. no travel troubles. making good time from i-70 to gaithersburg and rockdale towards the lane divide. back over to you. >> dave, thank you. it's 5:02 now. we have breaking news from new york city. a dozen people are dead after what's called a historic fire. the fire happened in a five-story brick apartment building in the bronx. now, within the last few minutes we've learned that four children are among those who died. it's not far from the bronx zoo. some 170 firefighters were on the scene to battle this. it was a four or five-alarm fire we understand at this point and the city's mayor is calling this s an unspeakable tragedy. >> this is

tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century. >> at this point, we know that fire started on the first floor of the building. officials say the death toll could rise. four people in the hospital are said to be in critical condition now. we're going to have a live update from the scene coming up in ten minutes. chopper 4 over the scene of an apartment fire in our area. the two-alarm fire forced dozens of people to evacuate the building off of georgia avenue and hewitt avenue. that is in the area of montgomery county. more than 100 firefighters responded last night. they rescued one person and brought in medical buses to keep people warm. several children stood outside in the cold in the heavy coats and hats. no word what caused that fire. the red cross was at the scene to help keep the families warm. chris lawrence is at the live desk right now with information on the shooting in the district. chris? >>

responding to a shooting in southeast d.c. this happened on first street off 295 and a few blocks from simon elementary school. we're working to find out how it happened and who the victim is and how badly they were wounded. we'll bring you more information as soon as we can. >> chris, thank you. four minutes after 5:00 now. two shootings along two busy highways to tell you about. this one may have affected your commute. the one most recently happened in bladensburg across the d.c. line. a man was found shot along i-295. we'll show you images from the scene. prince george's county police say a man was found on the shoulder of the road before 6:30 last night. the man was shot at least once and taken to the hospital in critical condition. we're learning more about another shooting in stafford county yet afternoon. more on that at 5:30. federal prosecutors say hackers took control of

two of the hackers are in custody in romania. the ransom ware attack controlled an estimated 123 cameras. that's about 2/3 of what d.c. police have at their disposal. the hack was discovered january 12th and in a federal complaint unsealed thursday, the cameras were unable to record video for several days. it was a major concern, as you can imagine, for the secret service. the problem here was resolved before inauguration day. an investigation determined no one was harmed by the disruption. red line riders, you might want to hear this. service has changed on that line because of expanded repairs to waterproof the system. the repairs will impact your travel at night and on the weekend. this project started last month. runs through february 15th. single tracking during weeknights and all day on most weekends between medical center and grosvenor. the work runs through 6:00

on sunday. they're using a new technique aimed to keep the tunnels dry. six minutes after 5:00. always good to be safe on the roadways. but this applies. >> this is the deadliest time on the road between christmas and new year's. derrick ward is breaking down what we need to know. >> good morning. we're sort of in that sweet spot, the area between christmas and new year's eve where people go on vacation. schools are out. but police are stepping up enforcement, not so much for the sake of citations but to keep you safe. there have been several accidents in the area. speed and road conditions and things like that. there's things to be aware of because there is a tendency to speed. we talked to some drivers yesterday who say that they

follow an old adage and watch out for the other guy. >> be more defensive this time of the year. you never know who is crazy. >> a lot of people drinking. they don't know what they're doing. >> reporter: so aaa says that this is indeed the deadliest time of the year for the roadways. and police are going to be stepping up their enforcement and their citations all over the jurisdictions, several jurisdictions. metro will be open until 2:00 a.m. on new year's eve. that's something they've done in the past. 2:00 a.m. does help. you can ride met oro on new year's. that gives you an alternative. derrick ward, news 4. trying to raise awareness about his lost and found program. they will tweet items left behind during the holidays. this is set to start at

dramatic crash at the end of a crime spree. brendan vincent of adelphi faces several charges including speeding to elude police. he assaulted a child in centreville last night and took off in a stolen car. he allegedly crashed -- he crashed into the van with a family inside. a 12-year-old was ejected and has life-threatening injuries. two officers were hurt when they tried to arrest vincent. they are going to be okay. the actress best known for playing sally rogers on the dick van dyke show has died. >> she was 94 years old. she got her start as a singer and child actor at the age of 3. even in the days before her death, she was active on twitter and posted an old picture of herself and her mom saying you're never too old to miss your mother. she died at her home in l.a. hundreds o

passengers were stranded at a london airport because of cold weather. a hard time keeping runways clear. some flights were able to take off yesterday. but it could take several days to get everybody rescheduled and off. it is another cold morning here. but our area isn't getting the worst of it. windchills this morning in parts of massachusetts minus 20 degrees. stop our complaining, right? >> in erie, pennsylvania, look at that. people are still trying to dig out from record snowfall. that area could get another foot of snow this weekend. even in nashville, people have been doing whatever they can to stay warm. in chicago, one person has died because of the bitter temperatures. i will say we were in nashville for christmas, i told my kids, it's going to be warmer, we're going to go to nashville. it was so cold. my kids were like, are you kidding me, mom? >> i heard someone say yesterday the

on the ground floor but spread all the way to the top like a chimney. we're going to show you some of the video of the smoke that was caught coming out of the building just before 7:00 last night. here on prospect avenue. we're not far from the bronx zoo. gives you context of where we are right now. there were several people inside. some had to flock to the fire escapes for help and they were rescued. other people in a scramble to get to safety hid in bathtubs and other areas. 12 people were killed in total. four we've learned this morning were young children. they're still trying to determine exactly what caused the fire and there's still a large fire department presence here. the fire marshals are on the scene. as a result of this investigation, still going on. there was a salting operation out here because of all of the water put on the building has turned to ice at this point. that's the latest from the bronx. back to

i'm susan hogan in for eun yang. we'll be saying goodbye to 2017 with the bitter cold temperatures. storm team 4 meteorologist sheena parveen is back from florida. she didn't bring us the warm weather. >> how do you think i felt when i landed and stepped outside? i almost started crying, to be honest with you. it was very painful, especially yesterday. even this morning, i will say this morning it's bitter too. we're in the teens right now. 21 degrees in washington. i really wish i could have brought that warm weather back with me. unfortunately, we'll see these type of temperatures into next week and highs in the 20s into next week. today, though, we're going to be about ten degrees warmer than yesterday. in the suburbs, we'll stay in the teens for quite a while after sunrise. by lunchtime, we'll slowly be getting into the 20s. take a look at what happens into tomorrow. i was mentioning snow earlier. there s

>> dave, thank you. our top stories this morning. 12 people are dead after a fire broke out in a five-story brick apartment building in the bronx. four children are among the dead. new york city deployed about 170 firefighters to fight this blaze. we're told that four people are still in critical condition. police made a gruesome discovery overnight inside a burning car in southeast. someone reported the fire after 7:00 last night on ridge road. officers found a body inside that car. a neighbor tells news 4 she heard nine to ten gunshots around the time of the fire. homicide detectives are investigating what happened. montgomery county police need your help to find this man. he was last seen at his russet road home around 4:00 a.m. on thursday. police tell news 4 that his cell phone is off, his family worried about him. if you know where he may be, call montgomery county police. statistically the deadlie

christmas and new year's. 200 arrests made after the thanksgiving holiday. there will be more law enforcement on the roads this weekend. derrick ward will be giving us a full safety report in the next hour. 5:34 now. you may have been caught in a backup. this crash caused a slowdown on i-95. it all started with the shooting of a woman. the man who crashed his suv shot at police on i-95. there was a chase and eventually the man was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. the stafford county sheriff's office says he's suspected of killing his wife earlier in the day on herron drive. he's now in the hospital. the man accused of killing a teenager who was days away from starting college is now charged with two more murders. james mayfield was arrested wednesday just hours after police say he committed one of those murders. detectives believe he also shot and killed a man on

police say his gun also links him to jamahri sydnor's death. you may remember the 17-year-old girl who was killed while driving less than a mile from her northeast d.c. home in august. her mom, by the way, is a d.c. police officer. she was in the courtroom yesterday when mayfield told the judge he shot sydnor because she, "got in the way." >> doing what she's supposed to do. getting ready for a wedding. she got in his way. my heart dropped. my stomach felt like it was going to throw up. completely disgusted. you know, he killed my baby. >> now, mayfield himself is just 18 years old. he's also suspected in several armed robberies around d.c. this morning, a bell haven family believes ashes sparked a house fire inside their vernon terrace home yesterday. it took firefighters from two ci

firefighters say the cold took a toll on them. many of them bundled up in extra layers trying to keep warm. 5:36 right now. the christmas tree that was at the center of your family's holiday has to come to an end. >> unfortunately, it does. keeping the tree up too long could actually spark a fire hazard, as you know. the national fire protection association says dry trees burn faster than newspaper and a general rule of thumb is to get rid of your tree when it starts dropping the needles. fire prevention experts say trees should come down after 30 days or by january 2nd, which ever comes first. we're working with you with recycling rules. montgomery county will take it on your regular recycling day. prince george's takes it with yard waste. arlington, fairfax county will take it during the first two weeks of january. t

for a while. snow moves in into tomorrow morning. we're looking at snow saturday morning when a lot of you wake up. i'll shoal you the totals in a second. it is going to be a frigid start to 2018. we're going to be colder into new year's day an today. temperaturewise, it's 21 degrees in washington. 18 dulles. 19 leesburg. 19 degrees in clinton. we're going to stay mostly cloudy. we could see passing snow flurries through the day. that chance of snow really increases before sunrise tomorrow. here's future weather. we go through today. we're staying dry. 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. but a little above freezing. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, that snow coming into area for most of us for the morning hours. then we go into 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 in the morning, still looking at snow falling. it should be falling fairly light. not huge snow totals by any means. we'll be seeing snow flurries possibly sticking around. for the
