volumes this morning. nothing in the way on the beltway. the springfield interchange. been keeping a close eye on the afternoon as people hit the roads. on route 27 in damascus, a crash near the northern oak drive intersection under police direction at the scene. light traffic getting to it and a brief delay getting past it. that's the latest. aaron and susan, back to you. >> dave, thank you. 6:01. a terrifying scene after an apartment fire kills at least a dozen people. tracie strahan from our new york sister station is live on the scene with the latest for us. >> reporter: good morning from belmont section of the bronx where 12 people were killed from that fast-moving fire. this morning, we've learned that four are children. thick smoke shot out of a top floor apartment before 7:00 last night on prospect avenue. according to fire officials, it started in a ground floor apartment and shot all the way up like a chimney. there was a scramble from

safety. 15 of them were rescued by fire officials. we're told that some had desperate measures to try and escape the flames. in total, 12 people were killed from the flames. fire commissioner daniel nigro says it's an unspeakable tragedy. mayor de blasio says this is one of the worst tragedies the city has suffered in a quarter century. >> determined the cause of the fire. get shelter for residents displaced from the building that's gutted. that's the latest from the bronx. i'm tracie strahan. back to you. >> back here at home. chopper 4 over the scene of an apartment fire in our area. it was a two alarm fire that forced dozens of people to evacuate the building off hewitt avenue. more than 100 firefighters responded last night. they rescued at least one person and brought in mel

keep people warm. several children sat outside in the cold air. other residents in heavy coats and hats. no word yet on what started this fire. the red cross was on scene to help those families. >> 6:03 right now. let head to the live desk. >> chris lawrence is tracking breaking news in d.c. aaron, since it's in southeast d.c., we are learning how police discovered a dead body inside a burning car. someone reported the fire last night at fort dupont. witnesses saw the car burning in an alley behind a royal palms on ridge road. when firefighters put it out, d.c. police officers discovered a body inside. a neighbor tells -- the time of that fire. detectives are investigating this case as a possible homicide. we'll update you just as soon as we learn more. aaron? >> chris, thanks. a police investigation on

commute last night. it happened across the d.c. line in bladensburg. a man was found shot along the highway there. prince george's county police say a man was found on the shoulder of the road near the eastern avenue exit. this was just before 6:30 last night. they say the man was shot at least once and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. being safe on the roads should always be a priority. this applies especially during the holidays. >> turns out that the deadliest time on the road is between christmas and new year's. derrick ward is live in seven corners now with more on this he's breaking down what we need to know about the holiday driving. >> all right. looks like we'll be having trouble with derrick there. he's been on the roads talking about the fact that there's a lot more enforcement this time of year and people need to make better choices about drinking, quite frankly. >> there's a lot of partying going on. derrick, what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: well, right now it's always clear at about t

now. but it's later in the day, as we've been hearing from dave dildine, around this time of year, things get treacherous. so police are going to be out because this period between christmas and new year's is indeed the deadliest in the year -- of the year. police will be out in force to keep you safe. now, what we've been seeing are some accidents on the sides of the roads and various causes for accidents. i know we'll have slippery streets this weekend. another reason to be cautious. you know, that's advice that people always follow. we talked to drivers yesterday who followed that old adage of looking ut for the other guy. >> be a little more defensive this time of year. you never know who is crazy. >> a lot of people drinking and they don't know what they're doing. >> reporter: and aaa says that indeed, this is the deadliest time of the year on the roads. they've got tips, obviously, keep your speeds down x be

friday morning, a lot of areas in the teens. but it's really the snow we're watching for tomorrow morning. take a look at future weather. today we're dry and by the time you wake up tomorrow, you should be seeing snow falling. we'll talk about the totals and a closer look at the timing of this coming up. we're following breaking news in india where the death toll from an overnight fire. at least 14 people were killed. most women who were attending a birthday party in mumbai. witnesses say the fire started small in a popular bar and restaurant in the top floor. in less than 30 minutes, it engulfed the twier building. first responders rescued -- expressing his condole

and prayers to those in the hospital. a bell haven family believes ashes sparked a fire inside their home yesterday. it took firefighters from fairfax and alexandria to put the flames out. they got out safely, not hurt. the cold took a toll on them as well. extra layers to keep warm. an update on a story we told you about yesterday. a mother and five children were in the hospital after the end of a crime spree. brendan vincent of adelphi faces charges, including carjacking and speeding to elude police. vincent assaulted a child at a random house in centreville and took off in a stolen car. he carjacked a car and -- he crashed into a van with that family inside. a 12-year-old was eject d and has life-threatening injuries. the

>> killing a teenager, days away from college. james mayfield was arrested after committing a murder. detectives believe he also shot and killed a man on tuesday. police say his gun also links him to jamahri sydnor's death. you may remember the 17-year-old girl, while driving less than a mile from her d.c. home in august. her mom, by the way, is a d.c. police officer. she was in the courtroom yesterday when mayfield told the judge he shot sydnor because she "got in the way." do what she's supposed to do. getting ready for a wedding. my heart dropped. my stomach is like it was going to absolutely throw up. completely disgusted. you know, he killed my baby. >> mayfield himself is just 18 years old. he's also suspected in several armed robberies

new information this morning on a police shooting of an unarmed motorcyclist in the district. a police officer who fatally shot sterling last year had no reason to pull his gun and was not in danger when he fired. this information came from an internal review that the post obtained. according to the internal police review, officer trainer and his partner palmer noticed a motorcyclist speeding and running red lights. the two officers pulled sterling over. he was on that motorcycle as trainer was getting out of his car. trainer drove forward and struck the car door. in the review, trainer says his leg was pinned between the door and the car and fearing for his safety, he fired his gun twice. according to the post, after investigators recreated the accident, they found that trainer's description of injuries did not match the incident. federal officials opened a tight al ix investigation regarding the university

the post says that the review will examine how the school handled sexual violence. this is the third investigation to be opened this year involving the university. the actress known for playing sally rogers on the dick van dyke show has died. >> rosemarie was 94 years old. she got her start at the age of three. she was active on twitter in the days before her death. she posted an old picture of herself and her mother saying you're never too old to miss your mother. a spokesperson says she died at her home in los angeles. your christmas tree was the center of a lot of memories probably this holiday season. all good things must come to an end. >> of course they do. it could spark a fire hazard. the national fire protection association says dry trees burned faster than newspaper. a general guideline is to get rid of it when it starts dropping needles. fire prevention experts say trees should come down about 30 days or by january 2nd

police made a gruesome discovery inside a burning car. a neighbor says she heard niefrn to ten gunshots. d.c. homicide detectives are investigating. this happened across the d.c. line near the eastern avenue exit. the man was shot at least once and taken to the hospital in critical condition. 6:32 right now. if you were on i-95 yesterday, you may have been caught in a terrible backup in stafford county. this caused the slowdown there. now we're learning it all started with a shooting and the death of a woman. virginia state police say the man shot at police, there was a chase, and he was found with a self-incompete self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

wife earlier that day. hackers took control of police surveillance cameras days before president trump's inauguration. now two of the hackers are in custody in roman i can't. it affected computers that controlled an estimated 123 cameras, about 2/3 of what d.c. police have at their disposal. it was discovered january 12th in a complaint unsealed on thursday. the cameras unable to to record video for several days. it was a major concern for the secret service but the problem was resolved before inauguration day. an investigation determined that no one was harmed by the disruption. with the new year a few days away. there's confusion about prepaying property taxes homeowners prepaid taxes before

16 before the hour. breaking news in new york city. a dozen people are dead after what's called a historic fire. chris lawrence is at the live desk with the latest. sue an, aaron, this is the deadliest fire in new york city in decades. four children died when the apartment building burned. here's a live look at the scene in the bronx this morning. 12 people were killed. four others in the hospital. the fire broke out around 7:00 last night in a five-story brick building not far from the bronx zoo. the city deployed about 170 firefighters to the scene to try and douse that fire. the fire commissioner is calling it an unspeakable tragedy. >> we have a scene here in which 12 people have died, four are fighting for their lives. in a department that's no tr

you want it through the new year and next week. we have cold temperatures that will be sticking around. snow around. i'll show you that in a second. a frigid start to 2018. it will be colder in the new year. it's 21 degrees in washington. 20 lorton. 19 leesburg. 10 degrees in winchester. that is the coldest spot on the map. 18 clinton. 21 degrees quantico and fredericksburg. mostly cloudy skies. a few flurries that could pass through later today. that's really about it. we do stay dry. future weather keeping us dry. the snow moves in before sunrise tomorrow. the computer models have been fairly consistent on the timing here, which is what we like to see. snow could be falling through much of area. mostly light snowfall by 9:00, 10:00. continuing through the area. clearing out as we get closer to noon and through the afternoon. but then it will start getting breezy and colder into sunday.
