calling it unspeakable tragedy. a fire in the bronx left people dead including four children. president trump is still in florida this morning staying active on twitter. the focus this morning on the post office. and if you have new year's eve plans this weekend. we have snow. i'll let you know the details in just a moment. news4 midday starts now. >> good friday day morning and welcome to news4 midday. i'm pat lawson. >> and

we have update on fire in the bronx. they think it started with a stove. not that far from the bronx floor. started before 7 last night and when a woman left her burning apartment she left her door open which allowed it to spread. >> the fire quickly spread up the stairs. fire travels up. the stairway acted looicike a chimney. took the fire so fast they had little time to react. couldn't get back down the stairs. those that tried a few of them perished. >> in fact, of the 12 people that died, five of them never even made it out of the burning building alive. there were more than 20 units in the building, but officials say the building wasn't new enough to require some of the fireproofing measures like sprinkler system. four people remain in the hospital in critical condition. >> chopper

area. five dozen people, including many children, were forced to evacuate the building off georgia avenue near hewitt. in the aspen hill area. more than 100 firefighters responded last night. and we just learned that a faulty furnace in one of the places might be the cause of the fire. here with us this morning. >> reporter: it happened about 9:00 last night. 60 people displaced. 30 children, 30 ha dults. miraculously no one was injured. brought some buses on the site and the apartment management says they can put up displaced residents on other units on the property. cause remains under investigation. and again, miraculously no one was hurt. in aspen hill, derrick ward, news4. >> now, in an effort to save lives in fires like that one you just saw, there is a new law

starting on monday everyone who lives in maryland will need a smoke detector that has a built in battery. the battery lasts for ten years. homeowners caught without the proper device could face a misdemeanor charge. landlords are responsible for apartment smoke detectors. all right. now we are going to get a check on the weather. not as cold as yesterday, but boy that's not saying much. still pretty frigid out there. >> that's not saying much as all. let's check out with the meteorologist as we head into the holiday weekend. how cold will it get? >> oh, my goodness bone chilling. that's the difference. we will have snow chances. but stepping outside in the district 27 degrees. how are you doing, 21 up there, leesburg at 23. farther another frederick in the teens. so as we head throughout the day, is there hope in sight. tah-dah, 34 degrees, that's as warm as it will get. more clouds building through the day.

and like i said we do have stomp snow chances coming in for weekend. i'll detail that in a moment. back to you. >> developing this morning, police are investigating a shooting in southeast d.c. after a man found wounded around 4:30 this morning. we know they found him on first street and looking to see how they are doing. follow updates in the nbc washington app. now a story that's been developing overnight, a gruesome discovery inside a burning car in the district. someone reported the fire around 7:00 thursday night on ridge road in the dupont area. police then found someone's body inside. a neighbor tells news4 she heard 9 to 10 gunshots at the time of the fire. now homicide detectives are investigating. traffic planners are studying another idea to get

according to a report from news partners, the region transportation board is plan to support ha bicycle beltway. the 45 mile loop would be built around the beltway with several paths in the middle taking to downtown d.c. and national mall. many of the paths are already built. another 21 miles are needed to complete the project. it has been a busy time at local airports and now the tsa is hoping to raise some awareness about the lost and found program. the agency spokesperson lisa is tweeting out photos of items left behind at checkpoints. at dulles over the holidays, she will be wearing images for another few hours with us. she just shared a link to her account on our nbc washington twitter page, if you recognize any of these items, you can contact the tsa to claim them. well, the odds not all that great, but if you are

president trump does an impromptu sit down interview

us, the president says the russian investigation needs to play itself out for the american people. also went against the u.s. postal service it's not charging enough and amazon taking over delivery. and he turned some heads about global warning. news4 edward has latest. >> reporter: president trump sat down with "new york times" and emphatic this i says there was no collusion with the russians. and goes on to say it makes the country look very bad and puts the country in a very bad position. sooner it's worked out better for the country. presidential historians say this has been a very interesting political year. >> i'm a historian. i've studied a lot of presidents and have never seen anything like this. >> reporter: president trump adding fuel saying he has the absolute right to do what he wants with the justice department which could include

mueller. next week the president plans to outline legislative agenda, topping the list infrastructure which may not be as easy to get democratic support. >> what he wants to do is give a lot of tax credits to those who are going to build toll roads, that's not going to cut it for those of us on the democratic side. >> reporter: on twitter the president mocked global warming saying it cob the coldest new year's eve in the east, and called on china after supplying oil. president trump will spend new year's eve at mar-a-lago. his tone probably won't change. >> just days before the president's inauguration. now two of those hackers are in custody in romania. the ran some wear attack affected computers

that d.c. has at disposal. hack discovered january 12th. and federal complaint unsealed on thursday says the cameras were unable toll record video for several days. it was a major concern for the secret service. but the problem was resolved before inauguration day. and investigation determined no one was harmed by that disruption. if you're iphone is acting a little weird these days, apple is finally telling us why. >> the company is saying, sorry, to customers after executives admitted to slowing down older model iphones. the company says we know some of you feel that apple has slowed you down, but only slowed it down to compensate for older slower batteries. >> what they have done is lowered the peak performance, which means your phone seems to be slower, but doing that to prolong the life of the battery.

new security measures. >> reporter: this weekend as the count down to 2018 begins, the nypd will be out enforce. >> people should feel safe. because the nypd and our partners are well prepared. >> reporter: police say they are upping security in the wake of two high profile terror attacks. in response to last october truck attacks that claimed the lives of 8 people, 125 garages near times square will be closed and sealed. and sand filled trucks will once again be used to block off streets. and after an attempted suicide bombing just two weeks ago, police say they are adding new training for officers. >> we have prepared a tactical bulletin, a response to suicide bombers, you will see increase in heavy weapons, bomb squad personnel t 1,000 cameras. >> reporter: but on the street the increased police presence puts many at

few days the new tax plan will take effect and causing a lot of confusion with people rushing to make the last minutes payments hoping to say some dough by the end of the year. new the irs is out with guidance on the new law. explaining. >> reporter: tax professionals may be ringing in the new year's eve much busier than usual. the new tax plan starting in 2018 property taxes will be capped at $10,000. before there was no limit. that includes state and local taxes. >> everybody have their checks ready? >> reporter: that leaves many scrambling trying to prepay the taxes before years end to save money. but now the irs says that only works if you had already had your 2018 property tax assessment. tax advisers say the best place to start, check with your local tax office. >> really depends on your locality and whether or not they permit this. some are bending the

in the last 24 hours we had two shootings on two roads. first one in stafford county. >> is gregory leon i-95. crashed his suv after firing the wounds. self inflicted gunshot to the head. >> suspected of killing his wife, melissa lee earlier in the day. >> i heard a

window. we had new neighbors, only been here two weeks, so we didn't know anything. and didn't know that it was them. it's sad. >> lee is now hospitalized. no officers injured in that shooting. >> just across the line they found a shooting victim near the intersection with eastern. prince georgia police say the man was found on the shoulder around 6:30 last night and died from injuries. so are investigating it as homicide and working to find the person who shot him. >> back on the job, after a brush with death, news4 reviewed state records that show a recent string of crashes in which suspected drunk drivers collided with maryland state police. one of those troopers was seriously injured in june. but now he's back on the job. and he's speaking with news4 i-team scott mcfarland. >> patrol from the wilson bridge all the way up to route 50. >> reporter: as second y

navigate belt 4 in prince goerg county. on route 4 in june the other driver was not vigilant. >> the vehicle hit mine in the rear, and it sent my vehicle i guess in the opposite direction of where everything was. >> reporter: other driver was drunk, police say, and crashed into flash, seriously injuring him. >> i was disoriented. i really don't remember too much of what happened. i don't remember how i got out of the car. but i'm glad everybody wags able to walk away from that incident. >> reporter: but there was a deeper problem. news4 requested records and found at least 8 troopers have been hit by suspected drunk drivers including one trooper who was hit twice. that is charles tiller who recovered and pull over 60 other suspected drunk drivers last year and won a trooper of the year award. new law is aimed at

what matters at this point. it feels frigid out there. let's go to the graphic that you can see what i'm talking about. my thoughts are with those in frederick right now where the current te current temperature feels more like 11 degrees, feeling like 20 in the district. so, yes, it's cold and get colder as we head into the weekend. a few other things we have to get to. talking about snow chances but for now let's get to friday. so running some errands headed out around noon. temperatures in upper 20s. bundle up. very cold. lots of clouds. you don't have to contend with any wet weather during friday. we will see clouds on the rise throughout the day. then as we head towards the 4:00 hour temperatures go to the low 30s. and that snow chance we've been talking about overnight, it starts to move in i'd say after midnight, more or less, and i'm going to show you that future cast in a moment. but let me help you plan

your weekend. as we head out through tomorrow, temperatures in the 20s. itsds going to it's going to be blustery out there. and chance of snow. new year's eve we are expecting good amount of sunshine. but take a look at these starting temperatures, in the teens, and only peaking in the mid-20s new year's eve day afternoon. here's a look at saturday. here's the snow chance i was talking about. about 2, 3:00 in the morning we'll see the flakes moving in. how much? looking at a coating just over an inch for some spots, but at this point we are expecting it to only last during the first half and maybe towards the early afternoon. by about 5:00 p.m. we start seeing that clear out saturday evening. that will cause any down ride cold saturday

diet, how can you do that, and what can you mean by that? >> when gu to the street you can bet a body score and see if they are in the range they need to be as far as weight for breed size, stuff like that. and adjust the diet to keep them healthy. >> and all these are domino effects. so adjusting the diet could mean prolonged life and better health. >> yeah. >> the third resolution starting a grooming routine, pet hair in the house. what's the best routine? how often should you brush your pet? >> depends on the pet. obviously a long hair kut cat every day. short hair dog not so much. just like staying on top of regular baths. >> and be careful not to dry their skin out. >> no. you can talk to your ket. she wants a kitten. you can talk to your vet about the best shampoo for your dog. >> dental hygiene, a lot of people don't think about

important because i had to have five of my dogs teeth pulled. she's 11 and obviously never brushed her teeth. but i guess this is probably a good new year's eve resolution to start getting your pet used to that. >> yeah, it's simple. you can do it every day. they sell tooth brushes and just as important for people to bring them in for regular dental. >> i guess if you get them in the routine, they will get more used to it and be okay. >> yes. >> now the fifth resolution, update your pet's id, that's important and a lot of people forget about that. >> so important. just checking their tags on their collar to make sure that all the information is still correct. phone numbers. address. also if your animal's micro chip, making sure all that information is up to date you have moved or last names have changed, getting that up to date. >> and i feel the microchip is the one that's forgotten about it because you don't see it. >> yes. >>
