>> announcer: "news 4 today" begins with breaking news -- 10:00 on the dot on this sunday morning, new year's eve, 2017. good morning, thank you so much for starting your day with us. i'm adam t-uss. >> i'm david culliver. angie has the sunday off. we have breaking news, this is just coming into our news room south of denver. >> reports of multiple sheriffs deputies down in littleton, colorado. the douglas county sheriff issued a shelter in place for people in that area. they don't have an update on the conditions of deputies remains an active situation. we'll update you through the nbc washington app. >> pretty frightful scene there. i know we also have some breaking news out of houston, too, that we're following. we'll keep you updated on that. cold weather out there as we start out this sunday in the 2017 year.

>> yes, it's very cold end of 2017 and it will be colder as we bring in the new year for 2018 early in the morning. dangerous wind chills in the forecast. look at this, our wind chill here in washington is actually gotten colder by 1 degree. feels like 6 degrees actual temperature is 20 degrees. and it's only going to be as warm as about a 15 degree wind chill as we go through the day today. feels like temperature everyone around about 5 degrees right now. but tonight we have a wind chill advisory for the entire area through monday morning. wind chills 5 to 10 degrees below zero. that is some dangerous cold heading our way. coming up, i'll show you how long it will stick around. we'll take an hour by hour look at your new year's eve forecast for your plans tonight. and of course your new year's day that's straight ahead. >> thank you very much. we are working meanwhile to learn more about a d.c. offer-involved shooting that haped in northeast. >> derrick ward is following it all and has the latest on a developing story. derrick, what are you learng?

investigation. here is what we know. this happened last night around 9:30 at a home in the 800 block of h street northeast. police were responding to a call for a domestic disturbance. they confronted a man whom they say appeared to be armed with a handgun. at some point police fired their weapon wounding that man. we hear now from the chief police. >> our officers responded for a second time to a domestic situation. they were out here. they were looking for a suspect and he returned to a home. not really sure about the details of the domestic. when they get on the scene, they confront an adult male who appears to be armed with a handgun. the officers end up firing their weapons. >> now, police will tell you that these are some of the most dangerous calls they respond to. this is still under investigation. that man has not been identified but he is in critical condition. back to you. >> all right, derrick, thank you very much. meanwhile, we are learning

to investigate russia's election meddling and the ties to the trump campaign. take a look, new york times reports that former tramp campaign adviser george papadopoulos spoke with an australian diplomat in may, 2016. the times says he told the d diplomat that rush ha had dirt on hillary clinton. that conversation apparently propelled the fbi to open an investigation. a white house lawyer has declined to comment and you'll remember that papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi. meanwhile a wave of protests turned deadly overnight in western iran. two protesters were killed in the clashers there. iran state media is reporting that authorities have temporarily blocked instagram and messaging app telegram in order to maintain peace. hundreds of people have been chanting against the government since thursday. president trump is weighing in. he tweeted his support for the protests. this morning, a young mother, an activist

her name is erica garner. she died on saturday after suffering a heart attack last week. the 27-year-old was propelled on the public stage after the death of her father, eric garner. he was put in a choke hold by an nyc police officer. >> erica garner turned personal tragedy into a public mission. she became a national advocate following the death of her father eric garner at the hands of a new york city police officer in 2014. his last words, i can't breathe, a rallying cry for those pushing to reform policing in the u.s. >> let's get support or without your support. >> that's right. >> i'm going to be out here representing for my father. >> that's right. >> reporter: her family tweeted, she cared when most people wouldn't have. she was good. she only pursued right, no matter what.

as we continue to try to get updates we're going to follow it for you in the nbc washington app, so make sure you check that to see what the latest is. >> adam, we have more breaking news. now let's take you down to texas. houston police there arresting a man they say was found with several guns and ammunition inside his hyatt regency hotel room. officers responded to the scene around 1:30 a.m. they responded for what our affiliate reports as a belligerent and intoxicated man. they ended up finding that ammunition stash and the weapons as well. they're searching his vehicle right now. what's interesting about this is that this is a hotel overlooking an area where a planned new year's celebration is set to take place. all of this, of course, incredibly frightening given what happened in las vegas earlier this year. we're going to continue to update this as well as we get more details. >> you tipped your cap to the houston police for that one for sure. let's look at erie, pennsylvania, different kind of story here. it's all about the snow as you can see here, residents still

wind chill advisory for everybody through tomorrow morning 9:00 a.m., 5 to 10 degrees below zero. this is dangerous cold with exposed skin in this kind of weather you could get frostbite in about 30 minutes. so remember that as we go through the morning hours. make sure you dress very warm today, tonight and tomorrow. here is a look at satellite radar, nice and dry. good for any new year's festivities going on. little clipper moving through ohio. we could have a couple snow flurries passing by today but the brutal cold with the wind is the main concern. here is the future wind chill forecast by this afternoon, i don't really see us feeling warmer than about 15 degrees. then we go through tonight, midnight tonight, feeling close to 0 in some areas as we bring in the new year. then early tomorrow morning look at this, we have wind chills below zero, but again we could have wind chills close to 5 to 10 degrees below zero. your new year's eve forecast, 5:00 p.m. when a lot may be heading out. blustery, it's going to be very cold especially

again, i told you it will feel close to 0. 12 degrees for a low tomorrow morning. but that dangerous wind chill will be in the forecast and through the afternoon tomorrow. not getting any warmer than the mid 20s. morning low of 12 degrees will be the coldest new year morning since 1968. it's been quite a while. it will be a pretty chilly through most of the area. you really want to bundle up. all exposed skin like i mentioned. we're really not going to warm up much especially close to normal. normal high is 44 degrees this time of the year. the warmest day this week is 37 on wednesday. but look what happens after that, 27 on thursday, we'll be watching one storm that looks to remain offshore. we have to watch the track of that closely. friday we could only be near 20 degrees for a high but it will be windy with that, too. more details coming up. >> great. pleasant forecast. thanks, sheena. imagine how cold it is up here -- we. new york city. >> unbelievable. >> getting ready for the ball to drop on 2017 going out, 2018
