good morning. >> reporter: hey there, aaron, eun. crews are working to secure this at kramer middle school. i can tell you, we're hearing all of this is resulting from a broken boiler in the basement that caused several feet of flooding in that area at the time. as a result, the d.c. -- rather, washington gas is on the scene trying to isolate a line in there in hopes of repairing that boiler. also, getting kramer back in order. they have a backhoe trying to dig and isolate that line. schools here in d.c. public schools are going to be off today. returning tomorrow for students and teachers. the question is, how much longer will students here at kramer have to be out of school as this is being repaired. they're doing all they can to get in front of this now. still too soon to say how soon all of this will be resolved. in temperat t

road. it felt like zero. they've been responding to fires like the one you see here. this fire at a home in annandale is different. the world war ii veteran died in the flames there. lewis's wife lenny woke up and couldn't find him through the smoke. >> i could not save my husband. i don't know where he is. >> lenny used to care for lewis and his first wife hazel before she died. his great nephew tells us that lewis was well-known for repairing fine glass and porcelain. >> find department stores and pick up things, people would bring things to their home. they were very well-known in the annandale community and in northern virginia. lewis' wife and another woman staying at the home got out safely. no word yet o

oakview drive, right lane getting by the water main break there. thank you, melissa. a chilling new year's eve quadruple murder in new jersey. a 16-year-old allegedly shot and killed his parents, his sister and a family friend inside his parents' long branch home. today that teen will face a judge. the suspect used a semiautomatic rifle. he faces four counts of murder and one count of possession of a weap weapon. investigators are still trying to determine the motive for that shooting. investigators have identified the man they say is responsible for a deadly ambush that killed a sheriff's deputy in colorado. a s.w.a.t. team had to take down the suspect. since then, several threatening videos have been found online. deputy zack parrish was killed when he was called to a domestic disturbance there. the

yesterday on behalf of their fallen deputy. >> it means so much to hear your stories and hear about zack. i want to hear about him and i want to soak it in. ziemt parrish leaves behind a wife and two small children. four other officers and two civilians were hurt as well. one officer still in the hospital. someone ran over two elderly men in san francisco and police believe it's because the driver just couldn't make up his or her mind. this happened yesterday. police believe the driver of a box truck may have been trying to make a u-turn and changed his mind mid turn when he hit the two men. the truck hit a car with five people inside. someone from homeland security happened to be nearby and arrested the driver. one of the men had a punctured lung and the other taken into surgery for internal bleeding. news 4 hasar

review of all school crossings statewide. this amid growing concern that kids are not safe enough when they walk to school. the number of pedestrian accidents in maryland jumped between 2012 and 2016, including a string of incidents near schools. one of them a deadly 2012 crash in germantown near seneca valley high school. they want an engineering survey conducted of all state roads and then ask counties to do the same on local streets. >> go to almost any elementary, middle, high school, public or private, in my district, you'll see what you see behind me. busy roads, no sidewalks, no bike paths. no safe routes. >> it includes a string of incidents near schools as we mentioned. he proposes the legislation when lawmakers reconvene in annapolis later this month. it is 6:15 right now. a new year is here. what about a new

just gone across. the good news, for a long time, the cues are in the center of new hampshire avenue trying to fikts the water main. they've located the leak and gotten it taken care of. now a second issue popped up. that's what you're seeing here. just off in the distance, there was a second water main break that burst and now it's actually flooding into people's homes just here off of new hampshire avenue. it's creating quite the mess and having water cascading down. so crews have been out looking for a second water main. you guys come out here live to the crews who are now off of new hampshire avenue, now looking for the spot of that second water main. they seem to have gotten the water turned off, but that's caused a cascading waterfall to go down roads here that are just off new hampshire avenue. we have quite a mess this morning as the cold temperatures are making for not only a traffic impact but problems to people's
