chills today, we're talking about actual temperatures being below ten degrees. >> before we get to that, got some school delays to tell you about. in northeast d.c. the cold is causing some plumbing issues at archbish archbishop. page county and frederick county on a two-hour delay. the same goes for berkeley and jefferson counties in west virginia. let's send it over to sheena to see, boy, what we're in for today. >> i mean, when you walk outside, it actually does feel in many areas colder than yesterday. take a look as we go through the morning though. for the suburbs we'll be staying, these are actual temperatures, below 10 degrees until 7:00 a.m. then rising into the 20s by lunchtime. look at what it's like outside right now. this is the actual temperature because the wind this morning is not really a factor. 16 degrees washington, 9 frederick, 1 degree in manassas. manassas could drop below zero.

morning, 8 degrees in clinton right now. aside from this, we're tracking snow in part of the area as we go overnight into early tomorrow morning. i'll show you the timing on that and we'll talk more about it straight ahead. what a relief to neighbors and anyone who commutes through silver springs. new hampshire avenue is back open this morning. part of the road near the beltway was shut down all day tuesday for a broken water main. the water in that area is back on too, from bethesda to southeast d.c. the frigid cold caused several water main breaks on tuesday. the break on the road in bethesda turned the street into a virtual ice rink. that bitter blast we're feeling could keep kids in fairfax waiting on their ride to school today. on tuesday some oe

because of the cold weather and hundreds of students were forced to wait in the cold for nearly an hour. this morning you can track any delays from the nbc washington app. just search bus delays. in southeast d.c., cramer middle school will open this morning on time. crews worked all day yesterday to fix a pipe that burst in the basement. that caused flooding and a huge mess. school officials are asking students and parents to use the front entrance of the school today. we want to remind you again, archbishop carole high school in northeast d.c. is closed today because of plumbing issues caused by the frigid cold. it's not just us, millions of americans are dealing with this bitter blast. take a look at this scene in florida. icicles on the orange trees. winter storm warnings are in effect for much of the deep south all the way up to new england. >> oh, my god! >> biting in the face just cold. no way around it. i don't think y

they tell nbc news the north might be about to test another ballistic missile. take a look at this chopper 4 video. firefighters fighting a fire at a town house in bowie. it's on spanish oak lane. they tell us the fire started in the basement and spread to the upper floors. fortunately no one was hurt in that fire. with temperatures in the teens, a maryland man search for his missing father is becoming more urgent this morning. prince gorges police are helping in that search for daniel dell haven. 65-year-old was last seen near costco yesterday. he has dementia and will not be able to communicate. he doesn't have any i.d. on him as well. if you see him, please call 911. two huge lottery jack pots still up for grabs. tonight's powerball drawing is worth $440 million. we haven't seen a powerball drawing that big sce

lect items. now through january 10th. ikea. you're watching "news 4 today." >> oh. >> go off in the ditch. go off in the ditch. >> never a good idea to lead police on a car chase, especially if you don't know where you're going. that suspect ended up crashing his car into a river in south carolina. the man was trying to run from the deputies because he was wanted on several warrants, but once he crashed, he started yelling for help saying he couldn't swim. the deputies rescued the man and his passenger. then obviously they promptly arrested him. three firefighters were hurt after a blaze ripped through several apartments in new york last night. not clear what caused it. we're told it jumped quickly from one building to the

folks escaped in the 20 degree weather. the firefighters were hurt when a stairway collapsed underneath them. they were all rushed to the hospital but only have minor injuries. new york city announces the first of nine jails at riker's island will be shutting down soon. the population dropped below 9,000. it's at 50% capacity and it has sewer problems to boot. fewer arrests and less crime are factors. the holidays have come to an end and lawmakers come back to washington today. the first order of business, swearing in two new senators. tina smith and doug jones. jones beat out roy moore in alabama to fill the seat of u.s. attorney general jeff sessions and smith will be taking al franken's seat.

a story about a special group of women who stand for those who stood for us. known as the arlington ladies, they're comforting figures at virtually every funeral at arlington national cemetery. nbc's lester holt introduces us to the group that's making sure no one gets buried alone. >> reporter: most of us don't know their names, but we do recognize their duty and sacrifice. >> want to celebrate with you his great spirit and his love for his family. >> reporter: but if only for an hour, an arlington lady is family and sometimes as in burials like this one, the only family present when an american patriot is laid to rest here. >> when we're at that funeral, we're paying respect, honor, dignity. >> reporter: they have attended hundreds of burials and stood with hundreds of families starting with the air force in 1948. today they are part of

overnight tonight for part of the area. then, believe it or not, it's going to get colder than it has been. i know that's kind of difficult to stomach right now, but it's going to be colder than it has been and the wind is going to make it feel even worse. look at the temperatures right now. we have suburbs that are in the single digits right here. so this is not the wind chill. these are the actual temperatures normally when we show you numbers this cold it is because the wind is playing a huge factor this morning though the winds are calm and that's actually allowed these temperatures to drop down so low. manassas is 1 degree right now. leesburg is 9 degrees. dulles is 4 degrees. clinton, 8. quantico 7. six degrees, the urban heat effect going on. temperatures as we go through the day today, wednesday planner, we will be in the mid 30s. back in the 30s. at least that's an improvement here. we will see indraesing clouds and

a storm off shore. here is the storm getting organized right now over florida. then it will be moving into the atlantic. let's zoom in on florida. this is very rare. this shows you how far down south the cold air goes. a wintry mix in gainesville and snow developing in tallahassee. that's pretty rare but it shows you how cold it is as we go further south. there's 2:00 in the morning. mostly south and east of the district. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow, then it clears away. needles to say, we're watching the racket very closely. lower chances and it dips farther to the west. higher snow chances inland. i'll show that you early. we're working with you to keep all of those new year's resolutions. how to reconnect with your family, especially those

today. let's get an idea of why that is the case. sheena parveen tracking the numbers this morning. >> oh, yes. guess what. we're not even talking about wind chill this morning. these are actual temperatures right now. we have a calm wind across the area which is in part why it got so cold. dulles, 4 degrees. maness sis is 1 degree right now. i wouldn't be surprised if they dropped below zero. clinton is 8. leesburg, 16. one of the warmest spots on the map. gaithersburg coming in at 7 degrees. for the bus stop this morning, it will be well below freezing. talking about in the middle to lower teens. if you are in the suburbs you could still be seeing single digits. today back in the 30s. however, look at this storm system over florida developing. that's going to give part of the area snow and believe it or not there is snow right now in north florida, melissa. they're freaking

the fairfax county bus employees, that's over 1600 buses. that's larger than the entire greyhound fleet. that's a lot of buses to maintain. what happened was these buses have been sitting for a couple of weeks before the christmas break, before the holiday break. then when you try to start them all back up, sometimes you have a hard time getting them going. that's what happened yesterday. about 200 routes were affected. students had to wait outside, as you mentioned, for about an hour. we talked with fairfax county officials about it. >> even with us doing the starting the past 30 days, letting them run for 30 minutes, sometimes the cold cranking amps is just too much. >> reporter: so what's going to happen this morning is fairfax county officials know there is an issue. they'll get out there nice and early to see if they can get the buses started up and make sure everything goes as planned. there is a way to track whether your
