doing to make sure kids aren't waiting too long for their buses. in this kind of weather, it could be dangerous, adam? >> reporter: absolutely dangerous, eun. what happened in fairfax county yesterday, they have so many school buses, like the ones right here, that some of these buses just weren't starting in the cold. over 200 routes were affected and kids ended up waiting for a while so that's why this morning crews are out here checking on the buses. some people have actually been making sure the buses are up to speed and taking a look at things this morning to make sure that they actually start in the cold weather. take a look, yesterday we mentioned over 100 buses were impacted. that means some students were waiting outside in the cold. that's because they had been sitting for the holiday break. when you come back and try to start them up, sometimes it doesn't go according to plan. there

here at the live desk following some breaking news out of southern california. this 70-year-old sheriff's deputy has died after a violent attack in san bernardino on new year's eve. last night lawrence faulty's body was carried out of the hospital where he spent the past few days on life support. he was offer duty when he and another driver collided. that man got out of his car and attacked the deputy. police have arrested the suspect now. the depy

for well over 30 years. eun? >> chris, thank you. three firefighters were hurt after a fire ripped through several apartment buildings in new york last night. it's not clear what caused the fire. we're told the fire jumped quickly from one building to two other buildings. residents were forced to wait in 20 degree weather before crews arrived. firefighters suffered minor injuries when a stairway collapsed under them. 5:13 right now. >> video from chopper 4. firefighters battling a fire at a town house in bowie. they say no one was hurt. well, temperatures in the tynes, a mayor riff land-mile-an-hour's search -- they were looking for 65-year-old daniel dehaven. he was last seen at the

his son says dehaven has dementia and will not be able to communicate. he does not have an i.d. on him. if you see him, please call 911. this time of year firefighters conduct a lot of rescues with people falling through the ice. in the last 24 hours at least two local fire departments have had to rescue people from cars that ended up on the ice. we spoke with montgomery county firefighters about what it takes to save a life on the ice. >> we throw things to you. then last-ditch effort we tether a rope to us and go out and get you ourselves. >> they see people skating on frozen bodies of water. firefighters recommend people stick to skating rinks because they are much safer. please listen to first responders. they know what they're talking about. don't try to skate on this. chopper 4 flew over the potomac river. you can see it is frozen over. this is video from

car jacking, assaulting police officers and causing a serious crash will make his first court appearance. police say brandon vincent led them on a chase through centerville. it ended when he crashed into a mini van carrying a mother and her five children. one of the children is still in critical condition. this is what vip sent looked like when he left the hospital. he tried to wrestle out of his handcuffs in the hospital and hurt two officers. the man accused of a deadly workplace shooting in a -- in harford county back in october has been indicted by a grand jury. he shot five co workers, three of them died. according to our news partners at wtop he's been indicted on two charges.
