this morning. what's called a bombogenesis. this is what's hitting most of the eastern seaboard this morning. it's a real thing. >> we have several crews working for you at this hour. sheena parveen and the latest on the storm. >> very intense area of low pressure offshore. it's quickly getting stronger. for us, we're seeing snow across the area. you see it on radar. it's coming in waves around the district. as we zoom in here, the areas that will see the least amount are parts of northern virginia, shenandoah valley, maybe parts of maryland to the northern areas near pennsylvania. we have storm ranger in parts of new jersey, closer to new york. seeing a lot of the snow bands moving in. what we can expect today is this system pullin

8:00 this morning. look at the winds. they're picking up. this will be an issue later on today. somara theodore is on the weather deck. >> good morning. thrusting the snowflakes into my face. heading out my door, the side roads, the subdivision roads are coated at least for a lot of us with snow on the ground. the good news is once you get to the treated roads, we start to see a little bit of more wet conditions. but it is -- you're not dealing with the snow on the ground. still blustery out there. you want to take your time. melissa, how is it looking? >> if the roads are treated, they're okay. if untreated, not the situation where you see that slush and hey little bit of ice and snow on the roadways. here's a live look in bowie. looking at church road, you can see a little bit of snow on the grassy

because this is a treated road, it looks interpret clear, mostly wet. our radar, all of that white and gray, you can see where the snow is falling across the area this morning. now, as far as the roads, the beltway is looking pretty good. a couple of water main breaks hanging around. university boulevard near connecticut works on blocking the left lane each direction. aaron? >> melissa, thank you. we have a number of closings and delays to tell you about this morning. >> all of this information is along the bottom of your screen and in the nbc washington app. d.c. public schools will open two hours late. warren, fauquier, paige, culpepper, clark and fairfax county schools are opening two hours late. in maryland, prince george's, calvert, charles and anne arundel county schools on a two-hour delay. the closures, rappahannock,

federal government is on a two-hour delay in the d.c. area with the option for unscheduled leave or telework. right now, it is not a day you want to head to the beach. take a look at a snow-covered boardwalk in ocean city. we'll try to bring that video to you. snow continues to fall this morning. that beach community and other parts of southern maryland are expected to get pelted. justin finch is live at the beach where a blizzard warning is in effect. justin, good morning. >> reporter: hey there, aaron, eun, the only relief about being out here is that it feels warmer here now than it did this time yesterday closer to d.c. we're on the boardwalk off the baltimore avenue and 7th street. i'll stand back a bit and try to show you something here. an experiment we're trying to devise. to show you how the visibility is easily reduced

conditions. the wind is whipping the snow everywhere. it's pushing snow across the boardwalk on to the beach and off of of the beach. we're watching the snow begin to stack up on the ground here. some police cruisers have been going up and down the boardwalk here. their tracks are rapidly being covered by new snowfall. perhaps, you can see my footprints going next to them and going pretty deeply into the snow here. when we got here last night, things were calm and fine. closer to later in the evening, still no real signs of the snow. when i got up early this morning, i saw what you're seeing, lots of snow and wind. they're asking anybody who doesn't have to come out here, not to come out here. we can tell you, ocean city is now bracing for between 5 and 8 inches of snow, perhaps even more than that. crews are saying

ready for literally anything. when you're talking about a bombogenesis happening, not far from where they're based. live in ocean city, justin finch, news 4. >> the snow looks heavier than here in d.c. and different parts of the area. tell us how much snow you think so far. i know you said 5 or 6 later on. but it looks like a lot. >> reporter: i hate to get into the weeds of numbers, but i was thinking mentally, this looks to be more than 2 inches, closer to 3 or so. i'll try to get a better measurement for you. it really is enough to warrant an alarm out here because the snow is beginning to pick up so quickly. again, we just saw a cruiser pass by us just before our live shot 57bd shot, and you can

here. justin, thank you so much. we'll check in with you without the morning. virginia and maryland declared states of emergency because of the snowstorm. >> they have been pre treating the roads to prevent icing before the morning commute. >> 200 trucks went out at 1:00 this morning to treat the roads in d.c. we've had low temperatures for a long time now, so any precipitation could cause issues on the roads. we're talking about the snow sticking and ice too. we continue our team coverage on the roads in southern prince george's county with news 4's megan mcgrath. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. yeah. we're making our way to parts of prince george's county. right now, we're still in washington. take a live look here. you can see the road conditions that we're seeing. we're on 295, about to take the pennsylvania avenue exit here and make our way across the border in

county. good conditions in this part of the world here. we're seeing basically wet pavement. everything has been treated. here in d.c., we're really not seeing much in the way of snow. it's pretty light. there's a dusting on the grassy areas. but nothing is accumulating too badly. now, i live east of here, southern anne arundel county and we definitely had more snow out there when i left at house at 2:00 this morning. i was seeing about 2, 2 1/2 inches, i'd say and it was sticking to the ground. in my neighborhood and on secondary roads out there, i had not seen any plows. the roads were completely snow covered. i did then encounter some plows. route 4, for example, not great. looked like they were in the right-hand lane but hadn't gotten around to the

going out for ani 30 years, snow is blanketing savannah and the low country in georgia. the snow and ice making things pretty dangerous for drivers down there, too. slick conditions led to a number of crashes. they're not used to it there. >> we think it's bad here in the washington area, imagine in georgia. >> this is ice causing problems there. within the last 30 minutes, we learned the federal government is on a two-hour delay. do you see them shutting down, somara? >> roads are coated this morning. we've got icy spots out there. please be careful. some lower visibility farther east. even with the snow coming down, we have blustery conditions out on the roads. it's really important that you guys give yourself time to take your time this morning. it's a war of words between president trump and his former

coverage as "newstoday" co4 nt we're working for you on this storm team weather alert day. depending where you live, you might see a coating of snow, perhaps slick roads. but it could be dangerous as this storm moves up and down the east coast and in our area. we'll have full coverage right here on "news4 today." more on the weather hitting our area in a bit. we want to look at other stories we're following this morning. a death investigation under way in montgomery county after a body was pulled from a pond. chopper 4 was over the scene in burtonsville last night. a neighbor discovered that body at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. they're trying to figure out who the woman is and how she died. a death investigation is also happening in germantown. montgomery county police say the victim has trauma to his body.

if you know anything about the case, police want to you. president trump is firing back at steve bannon. in bannon's upcoming book, fire and fury, he rips into a number of trump family members. he remembers a meeting between trump officials and russian lawyers treasonness and unpatriotic. the president issued a statement saying bannon has, quote, lost his mind. tracie potts will have more on that at 4:45. the search continues for a missing prince george's county man. >> they're hoping he's found his way to someplace warm. he's from beltsville. he has dementia and may be in trouble. he was last seen in the parking lot of the costco up the road from his home. >> there are plenty of restaurants and residences and shops. there's a possibility he's inside one of those places and people don't realize he's not a

paying customer. >> canine units spent the day they're worried he may not survive in the cold and terrible conditions. the mid-atlantic region blank epted in a thin -- blanketed in a thin layer of snow. >> we have a thin layer of snow in d.c. and in virginia we expect the higher amounts there. here's a look at the radar. it's intensifying. as it does so, it will continue to move away. the edge of the snow is near the shenandoah valley. not so much farther west but in the district, the snow is back. we had a brief break but it's falling again. it's fairly light snow. the winds are picking up. it's blustery and visibility is low as you get farther east of the district. again, that's where we'll see the higher amounts. as for the district itself, i mentioned a coating. could see less than an much when it's over. here's the storm system.

it will continue to move up into the new england area. the snow away closer to 7:00, 8:00 this morning. for your commute this morning, by 7:00, we have snow, icy spots. the snow is sticking. temperatures are below freezing. any snow falling is going to stick, even on the treated roads. some of the sidewalks are still sticking but a lot of the main roads are fine. by noon, icy spots around, but it will be blustery with temperatures in the 20s. as you travel treated roads, mainly just wet. side roads, the snow sticking, as well as the sidewalks. look at the winds. the winds are sustained. anywhere from 18 to 25 miles an hour on our map here. we're going to see gusts near 35 this afternoon. temperaturewise, below freezing. we're in the 20s. future weather takes the snow by 7:00 a.m., it starts to deteriorate it and move it away. speaking of the commute, look at the temperatures into tomorrow morning.

very cold, melissa. it'sd dealing with the snow. good morning. >> good morning, sheena. a new problem. alabama avenue at pennsylvania avenue, megan mcgrath and her crew out looking at the roads for us this morning and came across this. thank you for this shot. this car spun out there. each if the roads are treated, they can be slick in spots. the untreated roads, as sheena mentioned, worse by far here. no problems on the beltway right now. all of this gray and white, those shades showing you where the snow is falling across the area. i have a couple of water main breaks. another one northbound van dorn. one left lane getting by the water main break northbound, southbound. eun? >> melissa, thank you. lottery fever is growing. no one hit all six numbers in last night's powerball drawing. here are the numbers. 2, 18, 37, 39, 42 and the

ikea. another sign of how cold it is. you can actually see the ice forming on top of the water in the tidal basin in the potomac river. now to a reminder. even if something appears to be frozen, you should never go out on to the ice. >> chopper 4 in leesburg yesterday afternoon. yesterd first responders were called to someone falling through the ice. you can see the footprints and a large hole. they checked but did not find anyone. rescue crews in montgomery county have been putting their training to the test. two vehicles were stuck in ten mile creek this weekend. rescuers have been training nonstop for these types of rescues. >> ready to pull. one, two, three, four. >> now, this was one of those training sessions. the drivers of those two vehicles that got stuck in ten mile creek are okay. but they were very dangerous

rescue missions here. one firefightert time is critical during these situations. >> it's bearable with the protective gear on. without it, it would be completely unbearable. you wouldn't be able to function within seconds. >> now, in other states north of here, there is ice fishing, snowmobiles and even trucks on frozen lakes. but in our area, rescuers say no outdoor ice mistakes. we've been talking about the cold for days now. but it's the snow that has us in weather alert mode. i'm aaron gilchrist. good morning. i'm eun yang. look at storm team 4 radar this morning. what's called a bombogenesis. we've been talking about this. this is ghitting most of the eastern seaboard right now. >> we have several crews working for you this morning. we'll start with meteorologist

sheena parveen and the latest on the storm. the term you said means big area getting very strong, very quickly. we're seeing the snow locally and we had a little break in the district about an hour and a half paago. but now the snow is back. we have a coating at least through a good portion of the area. we have storm ranger up near new york, the mobile radar. we'll zoom in locally where the snow is still falling. fairly light snow but combined with a lot of winds now. visibility is an issue this morning, especially farther east of the district. there you see that snow closer to 81 in parts of the shenandoah vall valley. less likely for the accumulating snow. that area of low pressure is eventually going to move away by 7:00, 8:00 a.m. just remember, any snow falling will be sticking. the treated main roads are looking mainly wet, but i have seen over the key bridge this

morning some snow is sticking. w g about 25 to 35 miles an hour through the day today. actual winds, sustained winds are near about 15 to 20. we're going to check in with somara outside where it is windy and snowing. good morning, somara. >> getting blustery out here and visibility will be an issue for those farther east. let's look at the visibility map. down to 2 miles toward annapolis. just over 2 miles in clinton. that may not be critical, but you have conditions on the roads very slick right now. you want to keep that in mind. give yourself time walking out the door. because a lot of your driveways are going to be coated. you're going to need time to get the snow off of your cars. the good news is, a lot of the treated roads, while damp, you aren't driving over a lot of the icy spots. give yourself some time this morning. let's get a check on the traffic. how is it looking? >> megan mcgrath being helpful for us here in first 4 traffic. pennsylvania avenue at southern
