of them shut down fort day. federal workers started workday late or worked from home. and along with windy conditions temps expectsed to drop. >> so we start to meteorologist chuck bell to inform us where we go from here if this is coming to an end where do we go from here. >> once it comes to an end, bombs and temperatures fall into the single numbers for the next couple of mornings, all monitor ocean storm here looks a lot like a hurricane because that's how it's behaving. winds off the coast are near 70-mile-per-hour. ocean city have both had winds gusting over 60-mile-per-hour at times. and we are on the far western edge of any accumulated snow chance. most of the d.c. metro area has only had an inch or two. generally speaking around the i-95 corridor. a better higher accumulation for

prince georgia, charles, san stast. mary's county. gusting to 40-mile-per-hour and wind chills down in the numbers. a lot of things but not going to be warm any time soon. i am going to show you extended forecast coming up. >> you heard him mention all these cities. this is live picture of ocean city, maryland, not a perfect beach day, this is all snow. blizzard warning through this afternoon. justin finch live with how much snow has piled up. are you a cold man. >> you look so uncomfortable. sorry justin. >> thank you. it's cold. i have to tell you someone been out here for hours, this perhaps might be the worst conditions we have seen. the wind is pushing the snow into our faces at a fast speed. kind of hurts when it hits

many coulding out today. take a look, as you can see out here, not much going on behind me. that's recommended. however, a few brave people are daring to come out in their cars. and what they are finding along the way are some challenges here. take a look. this road here is a side street between the board walk and baltimore avenue and people are finding themselves on the major thoroughfares here running into the snowplowing. some dig eaging each other out. this is something we saw a few times on philadelphia avenue. as a matter of fact, we jumped in to help a few people ourselves. one of them is a reporter who was like us circling trying to see what the conditions were like out here. we had to help him dig his car out. he's a reporter with del mar now. we did that about an hour ago. take a listen to his take. >> reporter: the roads are icy.

for drivers on major roads like this stretch of i-95 south where a car went off the road. slushy and icy on side streets and in neighborhoods. now the big caution is for the wind that blew in with the snow, gusty at times and whipping in bone chilling misery. we found construction crews on the job and confident about brafg these elements. and it is trash day around dale city. >> very cold this morning. >> reporter: work goes on, right? >> yes. everything is all right. i guess we have to be safe. >> reporter: so this team methodically pushed through snow and wind to get through their routes. everybody pretty much in good spirits among the folks that i talked to. virginia state police had their hands full overnight dealing with some

none of them major. no fatalities, thank goodness, and thanking folks for heeding their warns to ta off the roads during the worst of this. but as you can see, people are starting to venture out now on to the roads. that is the latest live from prince william county in the dale city area. molette green back to you. >> thank you. we'll show you flights being canceled. the cancelations picking up on the east coast. checked about 200 cancelations and almost as many delays from early this morning. from the skies to the rails, where amtrak is canceling services along the east coast, northeast service between d.c. and norfolk has been canceled and fewer express trains and modified service between new york and boston. our team coverage continues now with

shore in response to this coastal winter storm. also on the bay bridge as well. and we want to show you this. a snowplow truck took down power lines. >> all this happened in pennsylvania avenue southeast. both directions were close while crews had to work to clear out the mess. >> megan, she was there this morning. how do things look now. >> reporter: fortunately with the power line situation, they were able to get it cleaned up quickly and back to normal for hours. and we are seeing improvement all around here. we are on branch avenue in the bra brandy wine area just past the split. you can see looking at wet paths. crews out all morning long and done their work and things are looking pretty good right now. but that was not the case

sloppy. not a whole lot of snow in the distri district but slippery enough to cause this sfin out on alabama avenue. heading south and east conditions continue to deteriorate. and in prince george and charles county the road got pretty sloppy for a time. >> i came from virginia so the roads were fine coming over that way. as i got down branch avenue further south it started to get worse. >> reporter: as the adults began to clean up, kids got to sleep in, no classes today in many did jurisdictions. but no such break for march na moreno. she still had to go to work. >> yeah, they got the day off but i have to work. >> reporter: they are happy. >> they are happy me no. >> reporter: by the end of rush-hour they did improve. those side streets still untouched by plows. >> main streets weren't too bad. my ig

storm team4 still tracking a winter storm that left us about an inch of fresh snow this morning. but now that storm is moving north. we were spared of the worst of this weather system but the folks in new england not as fortunate. >> some have named the storm the blizzard of 2018 and are expecting some of the most dangerous weather in recent memory. let's get right to nbc chris pu pull lone in boston. >> reporter: hi. we are starting to get into the blizzard conditions now. hi win high winds and heavy snowfall. so there might be storm surge. massachusetts governor charley baker told people just stay home today. there is about 16 inches

degrees. but the winds are gusting a lot higher. temperatures mid-20s. but when you factor in the gusty wind. look at these wind chills. down in the single numbers to around 10 degrees above zero now. by tomorrow and saturday morning, it's going to be a lot worse than that. there is the big ocean storm. if we really wanted to get hammered with snow here, that storm had to be about 100 miles further to the west. so really on the western f periphery of any snow. western of the beaches there. we have shown you those pictures. here's future weather. last of the snow flurries gradually breaking up pulling out somewhere around 2:00. could be sunshine out in the shenandoah valley could get a break of sun before it goes down right after 5:00 this evening. then the next couple of days the wind and cold are here to stay. so there is the wind gusting now to 40-mile-per-hour in

norfolk for us this morning. >> reporter: for a place averages 8 inches of snow each year this is a big deal. so here in virginia the wind has been blowing and snow all night long. as you can see still coming down. it has been a light fluffy snow blowing around in wind that easily gusting over 40-mile-per-hour through the overnight. hard to measure. i've been measuring in different spots and getting different measurements every time i come out. right now this looks like about six-inch shs. and i say that's probably about the average. you look at the snow here, very light and fluffy, and impossible to make a snow ball. very difficult to make a snow man as well. and certainly the wind is going to keep picking up the snow as we see the winds not calm down even as the snow starts to taper off this afternoon. travel obviously has already been disrupted. roads are snow covered. going to take sometime. some warmer air which we are not going to get today or even this

weekend. temperatures drop with another blast of arctic air coming in as winter storm continues to pull out of the tide water. >> if you are off today with the kids, great idea to go to the grocery store and stock up for the weekend. >> i already bought the bread and milk stocks i could afford. >> now forecast snow. >> yeah, cold, cold, cold, behind this. i wish we could get a little bit more snow out of all this, because if we are going to suffer with the cold we might have something to look at. but not a lot of snow but be an abundance of frigid weather for the next couple of days. there is the view from our tower camera. nearby neighbor cathedral in the northwest whachlt you need to know, wind tapering back to flurries around here for the next couple of hours t

cold and windy again on saturday. and simply frigid on sunday. we could be close to record low temperatures in all three of our area airports friday saturday and sunday morning. may not break them but we'll be close. right now the current winds are gusting between 20 and 35-mile-per-hour every where. so the little bit of snow we have had is still blowing around and feels mixed up in the atmosphere. wind chills single numbers. here you can see on radar last of the snow showers pulling out. improving. but not much of a warm-up today, stuck in the 20s. but for tomorrow very cold start. single numbers in most of the suburbs, record tomorrow is just below zero at national airport so won't get there tomorrow. but not much of a warm-up. mid teens all day tomorrow. and again wind chills near zero. all during the day. here's our computer model forecast for wind chill temperatures.

maryland. now up to 18 inches of snow is expected in parts of eastern new england. our area is dealing with not this picture, a little less than that. but when it's this cold, it could really put your house at risk. your pipes can be just as important. >> this morning news4 megan fitzgerald is working for you to make sure your dripping faucets isn't the only way you are protecting your home. >> reporter: the problem in this home is right here underneath the kitchen sink. >> the customer hasn't been using the kitchen sink, and the cold air got in, it actually froze the pipe because it was standing water. >> reporter: christopher rose is a plumber with row toe rooter plumbing. he says he and his colleagues have been keeping busy. >> water bursting. pipes bursting all over the place. sometimes you have

pipes. >> reporter: so to make sure this doesn't happen to you, he says keep the temperature in your home at 68 degrees or higher. keep cabinet doors open to allow the warm air to reach the pipes. and before you go to bed at night, rose says let all faucet ns your home run at a drizzle then turn them off when you wake up. if your washer or dryer are in the error exposed to the cold air, some work to do there too to make sure the water is drain frd the pipes so they don't fwre freeze. >> unscrew them, both of them, from the hose and make sure the water is run out of it. >> reporter: if you know you'll be weigh from your home for longer than two or three days, experts say make sure you turn off your main water shut off valve. >> turn this off where then turn on all your faucets in your home and make sure all the water is drained out of the pipes before turning the faucet off. sa
