showing the storm the last few hours, it is hammering places like boston, places like new york, even the ocean city area in new jersey, parts of new jersey picking up over a foot of snow. now, the snow is out of here, but behind this -- this is what we've been talking about the last week -- is going to be the wind and the wind chill. wind advisory in effect. winds could gust up to 50 miles per hour tonight. 50 mile an hour wind you see in the area highlighted. that could take down trees and see power outages as a result of that. those winds also combined with the extremely cold temperatures, and you get the wind chills. look at the wind chill advisory. it includes everyone. you have wind chill warnings for areas along the blue ridge here, but wind chill advisories, 5 to 15 below 0. they could go down as far as 20 to 25 below 0 tonight and early tomorrow morning. much more on this, much more on the cold, how long it sticks around, what to expect tomorrow morning, what to expect this weeke

the weather center. >> well, eastern shore and the coast got the brunt of this storm and the pictures tell the story. >> that's right. we want to show you some video here. this is from ocean city those who did try to get out of their homes wound up getting outside and getting stuck in all that stuff. news4's justin finch continues with the coverage. he shows us what the board walk looked like earlier today. >> reporter: you can get a sense of how much snow is out here by the size of this drift. by this hooters sign here, i want to give you a sense of how high it is by standing next to it here. this is really high, really deep stuff. the snow at this point very dense. it's not just powder any more. it has a bit of an icy grit to it. and again, it's been snowing for several hours now from overnight into these hours right now. taking a look now, around the board walk here as you can see, it's just white everywhere here. so much snow,

no one is out here but us and a few other people who dare to come out. most of them plow operators, first responders and a journalist or two we met earlier. so, the advice has been for those who do not have to come out here to not do so. and people tend to be abiding by that. we now know ocean city bracing itself for as much as 12 inches of snow out here. public transportation has been called off for today until roads improve. and as you can see, there is a very good reason why. we're live here in ocean city. i'm justin finch, news4. now back to you in the studio. >> that is painful to watch, isn't it? now, as we told you, we have some breaking school announcements just coming into the newsroom here and these are all for friday. and because of the frigid weather out there, all schools in prince george's county are going to be open two hours late. anne arundel county and fauquier county will be on two hour delay. frederick county, virginia

the complete list will be scrolling across the bottom of the screen so keep it tuned here throughout the afternoon. our team coverage continues with prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins. tracee, you've been around, all around brandywine to la plata. how are folks faring? how are the roads out there? >> reporter: well, the roads are slushy. you can see that everything they put down on the roads to try to deal with all of this stuff, it's working. but when you come into the neighborhoods, the secondary streets, this is what you have, compact. it's going to stay this way through tomorrow and this is the other thing you see. look at this one, look what it does to the street sign over there. see how hard the wind is blowing? doug kammerer was telling me we are looking at wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. it's hard to talk to you. freeze after awhile. but that wind hits your face and it is just hard to deal with. you can see right now it's coming across my face again. you can see that one coming

people are dealing with all of this and trying to prepare for what's going to come, and that's going to be a deep freeze. >> very slushy, very slushy, very dirty. >> reporter: and that slush anditis are expected to hang around throughout the night and through tomorrow. >> this morning was kind of rough because the snow was accumulating so fast. but it's pretty much in good conditions now. >> reporter: main roads are clear around route 5, but neighborhood streets are covered. >> the light snow. in other words, it's not sticky. so, it's easy to get off the cars, it's ease toy get off the sidewalks and most likely for the road crews to get off of the road, too. >> reporter: but that wind. the news4 storm team says winds are up to 50 miles per hour in southern maryland. >> it's not a bad snow. it's just real cold and windy. >> reporter: those primary streets were

of concern for today. a lot of the neighborhood streets are going to be hit overnight and then also into tomorrow morning. reporting live from brandywine, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> reporter: i'm david culver in richmond, virginia. it's not often to say head south if you want to see more snow. with this system that's the case. you can see in the commonwealth they have a few inches in some spots, good amount compared to northern virginia. looks pretty scenic when you see benches like that. or over here, capital ground, you see the statues covered with the coating and the trees even. all nice to take in. the roads, not too bad either. when we were coming down from northern virginia today, clear in most spots then it got a little bit slushy compared with places farther north. overall it is a' passable. schools are closed and businesses as well. as the snow stops,

as a matter of fact, the national weather service said that this officially is a blizzard, more than three hours with winds over 35 miles an hour, low visibility, heavy blowing snow. that's what we've seen all day long. but it's not just the snow that government officials are concerned with. they say they're also concerned with wind and water. the snow came and the flood waters followed. a midday high tide right when snow and wind became the most intense since storm surge crashing and homes on the massachusetts south shore. >> i've never seen this before. this is really cool and crazy to see these waves. >> reporter: storm surge rushed ashore in downtown boston turning state street into a river of ice and slush. many towns with low lying areas with rescues of people caught off guard. >> this is cold for sure. >> reporter: in all 16 inches of snow expected in boston, moren

>> just seems like another winter day. >> reporter: it left new york city under a blanket of white. school children there got a rare snow day. but official worry more about the wind and snow. >> mother nature can bring the severity that is beyond your control. >> reporter: the clean up will take place in the south. north carolina governor said three people died there. >> our biggest concern is the freezing temperatures that will linger. >> reporter: the first winter blast of 2018. causing havoc for millions from florida to canada and everywhere in between. and as you might imagine, travel is an absolute mess throughout the entire region. the roads are terrible. it's snowing 2 to 3 inches an hour. the plows can't keep up with it. last check, airport s are technically open but flights aren't getting in and out. more than 4,000 cancellations in the u.s. today. most of them, of course, here in the northeast.

cancelling at least 75% of their slate. it will take a little while to get back to normal. leon, wendy, let's go back to you. >> those are tough people up there in new england. >> they've been through this before. >> it's still tough for them. we're not as tough and it's going to be even tougher for us down here because this cold weather is not going away like in an hour, right, doug? >> no, because, you know, the back edge of this is coming through. the cold, the wind and the entire time for the storm we've said that was the most dangerous part. >> yeah, absolutely. we saw a lot, pretty much every school was closed today because of the weather, the snow. tomorrow because of how cold it's going to be. >> let's look now. you can see the camera shaking. if you step outside the studio, the tower is 150 feet tall. you hear the wind whipping through the towers here. current temperature sitting 26 degrees, winds out of the north west at 17. but the guests are much higher. gusts upwards of 40 miles per hour,

rest of the evening. as far as the snow is concerned, it is gone. a couple of snow showers over towards the chesapeake, that is it. but here's the storm itself moving up the coast. it's right in through here right now, right off the coast of bongs. so, they are getting just tremendous winds, tremendous storm surge from this. could be one of the highest storm surge of all times in the boston area, new york getting it. we are done with the snow fall. it is now the temperatures and the wind. 26 the current temperature in d.c., 21 martinsburg, 24 douns towards manassas. as we move through the rest of the afternoon the wind is a huge factor. upwards of 40 to 50 miles per hour. you can see the area highlighted. northern virginia, the entire state of maryland, west virginia and the district. what can we expect from that over the next couple of hours? the big thing, the winds as i mention, 50 miles an hour, and what they're going to bring is potential tree damage. be ready for power

know where your flashlights are, batteries, make sure phones are charged just in case and have someplace to go because it is going to be brutally cold tonight. let's talk more about the wind chills now as winds continue to rip on through. wind chills continue to go down. >> absolutely, doug. we're talking about wind chill temperatures tonight. 20 degrees below 0, take a look at how it is feeling out there right now. i want to remind you, wind chill is when we take the air temperature and we factor in the sustained wind so the winds are sustained at about 10 to 25 miles an hour, you get the stronger gusts so it could even feel a little colder out there at times. again, we can't say this enough. dangerously cold tonight and again tomorrow night. right now it is feeling 6 in gaithersburg, 13 in washington, and about 8 degrees in manassas. skies clear out that allows our temperatures to plummet. as we see the sunsetting, we'll see a wind chill advisory go into effect. it official lip runs from 10:00 p.m. tonight till noon tomorrow. everybody under the wind chill

all right. now at 4:30, a live look at the rockport, massachusetts area. this is outside of boston. check out that snow they've got coming down there. a little bit of wind as well. they're bracing for a really big bitter blast. >> right. and they're struggling up there. those yankees know how to deal with this kind of stuff. we have live team coverage down here. let's start with doug in the storm center. what you got now? >> you're right, guys. i talked to two friends, one of which is in boston. he's having a really hard time of things in the boston area. one thing he told me was there's a lot of people that are still walking around out there, no problem. they're acting like this is something they deal with. this is something they deal with this time of month. now, talked to another friend in the same conversation and he's talking about the people in miami where the current tuum tour is -- temperature is in the

the radar right there, nothing going on in our immediate area. but you notice what's happening up towards boston, up around new york, still seeing that incredible snow fall making its way on up here. we've seen 12 to 18 inches for some of the higher points here including one just south of philadelphia around the cape may area. still for boston, they've got another 12 hours of this storm before it moves on out. for us, the snow is gone, but now it's the wind and the wind chill. look at the current numbers. 6 is the way it feels in gaithersburg, 8 in manassas, 13 in d.c. and if you take the wind chill that i'm expecting to see by tomorrow morning, it will feel nearly 20 degrees colder than this tomorrow morning. so, if you think this is cold, guys, it's going to get a lot colder over the next 24 hours. and it's going to stay that way right on through saturday night. >> all right. and things are getting more than just a little chilly this winter. the cdc says more than 1200 people die every year just from being out in the frigid temperatures. but how cold is too cold? and how can you tell when it's time to

amee cho talked to experts today. she's outside in northwest, to explain what you heard. amee? >> reporter: hi, wendy and leon. bitterly cold temperatures, frostbite is very much a real concern, even just a few minutes of exposure of your bare skin can put you at risk, especially your fingers. notice i'm not taking any chances. doctors say frostbite comes in stages. the first stage is frost knip, that's very much treatable going inside, putting on warm blankets and clothes that sort of thing. but the second stage of frostbite, that can cause permanent damage. doctors say the elderly and kids are the most at risk for frostbite but really anybody can get it. we asked a doctor at med star washington hospital about what warning signs people should be on the look out for. >> the temptation is ye usually the first thing, numbness, tingling, fiery feeling in the fingers. skin color changes so sometimes people have blistering, redness that

storm team4 radar here. >> it is not quite done with people in rockport, maine. this is what it looks like there. for us, a bitter blast of cold is coming in next. >> and we've got team weather coverage for you on that. let's start now with our chief meteorologist doug kammerer. doug? >> we're tracking that storm, guys, watching it making its way out. across our region, one thing for sure. this is going to be the coldest night we've seen so far this winter. we've had a lot of really cold nights the past couple weeks. this one, yeah, this one is one you'll write home about. you might not be able to because the ink will be frozen. nothing on the radar, the storm system is gone as far as the snow is concerned. we picked up about an inch in and around the d.c. metro area, down to the south and east we picked up close to 4 inches. we could pretty well with our snow fall forecast as far as that was concerned, not much at all back to the west. here is the storm. you can still see it just coming down around the boston area. winds right along the coast upwards of 60 miles per hour. boston and new york are really getting hammered. we

the heaviest snow did not coincide with the heaviest wind around our area. it did, however, in places like ocean city in our closest zones. gaithersburg 22, 24 in manassas. look at the winds. these winds gusting close to 40 miles per hour right now. 38 gaithersburg, 38 in frederick, 39 in hagerstown and 40, near 40 towards manassas. could gust to 50. that's why we have the wind advisory in effect. that wind advisory going to 7:00 tonight. wind chill advisory now, little bit different, wind advisory is solely for winds. wind chill advisory is when wind and chill combines. notice the darker blue, towards blue ridge, western maryland, this is the area under a wi7bd chill warning. it could be -- rather, 15 below 0, could be even colder than that. wouldn't be surprised to see0

it's coming from and how it gets this cold around our region. amelia is taking a look at that from the storm center. >> exactly, doug. this storm system was so strong it was able to dislodge from the polar vortex. we've been talking about this term, it is not a new term, it's a buzz word so let's talk about it. here's where the polar vortex typically is, around the north pole is a low pressure with arctic, arctic air. this storm system riding up the coast now was so strong that it was able to tap into some of that arctic air sending it down into our region as well as the great lakes and the northeast. this is why we're saying we have dangerously cold air. some of that polar vortex is coming down. the north pole as cold as it is there, that air is getting sent into our area overnight tonight. it is which is not only tomorrow, but saturday into sunday morning. take a look at best, this is how it's going to feel during the afternoon hours. again, like doug was saying with the wind chill so. when you factor in

speed and temperature. 0 out there tomorrow afternoon, that's after the dangerously cold start feeling about 0 out there saturday afternoon, on sunday feeling about 10 degrees. and then we start to see the system loosen its grip on monday and futuesday. wind chill temperatures not that bad. not just the wind chill temperatures. we start to finally warm up a little bit. but not any extreme warmth on the ten-day forecast. >> no, again, our average high temperature this year is in the mid 40s. we don't see that coming until the middle of next week. due to the fact we're going to be so extensively cold, 19 on friday, 18 on saturday, 24 on sunday. but with less wind sunday, the better of the two weekend days. 38 on monday and we're tracking a storm that could bring us a little bit of a mix. this is something we're going to watch very closely. could be another weather alert day on monday. and then staying on the chilly side, the warm est looks like it could be late next week, but this is another storm that if it travels to our south could become a colder system and we could be dealing with some more

wintertime. these are live pictures from union station. the wind has been whipping that flag. it's getting a break right now, but it will be whipping around in just a minute. as for snow, we didn't see much accumulation in our area, but in new york they could get up to 10 inches of snow and the mayor there has declared an emergency. warning this weekend that it could feel like negative 20 outside. then in boston, they are likely to see even more snow and they've taken a beating up there. and the big issue for boston right now is widespread flooding and along the coast, the winds are gusting at 65 miles an hour. >> they are getting beat in bean town. back here in our region, the big concern over the next couple of days is that big drop in the temperatures and dangerous wind chills. just moments ago, prince william announced it will have no school tomorrow. no school in prince william. now, montgomery and prince
