good morning everyone i'm molette green. >> and i'm erika gonzalez. so it's 11:00 a.m., almost the afternoon, and the feel like temperatures remain in the single digits. in some cases even colder. extreme conditions kept road crews busy this among and closed many of the area schools. >> chopper 4 flew over great falls and captured this icy scene. snow still coats the platomic river. and it is flowing but makes you feel colder. let's catch up with what we can expect from meteorologist chuck bell. look at this, beautiful, but goodness gracious, cold. >> i'm not getting in that water. no way about it. nor should anyone out there watching today as well. a lot of ice on the local ponds and lakes now. don't go on the ice. i know it looks tempting, but in many cas

hey, megan. >> reporter: yeah, wicked cold oud here and causing problems and still seeing some of the issues happening. water main that broke on 27th street and water came gushing out on surrounding street so i street, rock creek park, all of that just frost. we had actually inches accumulated ice on the roadways, so everything had to be shut down. take look at the video from early this morning. and you can see just how dangerous the situation was. there were was like a skating rink in this entire area. tricky thing is there are access points to major commuter routes all around this intersection. and so that wrecked havoc on people coming to work. they could not go down on the rock creek parkway. it was closed on the northbound side. also the reamp from 66 west to street, thas

so a real problem for people trying to get around. i spoke to a woman new to her commute, so this was bad timing for her. >> first time coming this week, so it was pretty hectic. >> reporter: first time this is what you get. >> yeah, the whole mess. >> reporter: all right. now the good news is there is some progress here in getting the streets reopened. you are taking a live look right now at virginia avenue. this was covered with ice. they had the salt trucks come in. they've been working on it throughout the morning. brought in a fund r front end loader and able to scoop the ice up and haul it away. in the last 20 minutes virginia avenue in the westbound direction reopened. same thing with northbound rock creek they were april to get the ice out of here. so rock creek is now reopened. now as for this area you can see that d.c. water is on the scene. they have to dpo the work of repairing the water main. they have the instruction a

main fire building and wind definitely had a part of it. wind will carry flames considerable distance. so, yeah, wind had a big effect. that wind is what made a fire at one building turn into a fire at five buildings in newark, new jersey this morning, broke out 3:00 a.m. in a

building. firefighters said they couldn't make entry into the original building because the heat was so intense. two firefighters were hurt when they slipped on ice trying to battle the flames as firefighters were trying to douse the flames all the water was turning into ice bass temperatures below freezing. cause of this still under investigation. and frigid temperatures are expected to last for much of the weekend, impacting millions of people throughout the northeast, including those firefighters. >> we are talking about from the carolinas up to canada where cleanup is under way after blast of snow and major flooding as well. nbc chris malone reports from boston. >> reporter: massachusetts coastline frozen stolen a seen out of arctic after wind and water battered the region. now after the injury comes insult. >> cold for sure. >> reporter: arctic blast blanketing the northeast, midwest, and much of the deep south with the wind chill it

these frigid temperatures need to be taken seriously, because time outside can be frostbite. >> ants wind makes the misery worse. >> if the wind would lay down, things wouldn't be quite horrible outside. but both of those things need to be extra cautious, put gloves on and try to keep the skin from drying out. because the wind is going no where fast. probably going to stay this breezy for about the next 36 hours. so the cold air continues to just pour into the region. northwest winds 23-mile-per-hour has prevented much of a warm-up. 17 current temperature with wind chill of minus 1. cold like that just about everywhere. could be the coldest litter will i in years. our forecast for today is 19 degrees. the last time we failed to make at least 20 for high temperature was january 22, five years ago. so our coldest day

years. and if we can stay below 20, two days in a row, today and tomorrow, it will be the first time that's happened since 1994. so temperatures right now, 17 washington, 18 leesburg, all the way up to 22 in fredericksburg but the single numbers below zero. so planning out the day today, highs around 18, 19 degrees at the most. temperatures will drop quickly, again once the sun goes down, so by 11:00 p.m. tonight down to 11 degrees. all the suburbs in single numbers tomorrow morning, maybe closer to 10 in downtown. but highs today only in upper teens and 20s. so what to wear today? get between as many layers as you can, and if you own it put it on, because you'll need it, parka, thick socks, anything and everything to keep you warm. wake up temperatures tomorrow morning about 7 in washington, 10 by the bay, 2 above in gaithersburg, and

looks like 18, 19, that's about all we can muster for high temperatures today. brutal cold is with us not just for today but tomorrow as well. frigid on sunday though the wind won't be as much of a problem on sunday. then monday with the cold air in retreat and moisture on the way may have a wintry mix on monday morning. tomorrow morning, saturday morning, waking up, temperatures in the single numbers once again, about 7 in washington, and no that's not the record for tomorrow morning. the record tomorrow at national airport is 2 above. the record on sunday morning is 5. noul at dulles airport the records are 4 and 1. bwi 5 and 3 the next couple of days. i think if we'll have a chance at breaking a record i think sunday morning is going to be the best chance. wind will stay up tonight. and that will keep temperatures a couple degrees above the record. but the dump of cold air will eventually start to retreat as we get into sunds and monday. and temperatures will be back near average by thedd

those, what do you think? >> this year especially there were some odd choices of movies that i think are probably going to be the leading oscar c contenders for best over all. comedy side because they are a little bit of sat tire. this he do this every year. so i think two of the favorites is lady bird, awesome coming of age movie, about millennials, but also get out, said this is more of definitely more of horror movie or documentary about the race relations. so that's here as satire if the comedy category. so i would give it to get out if it's the strongest film although i don't think the comedy but best movie for the year. for best actor comedy james franco for the disaster artist. sort of the edoo
