let up. the temperature just keeps dropping. believe it or not, we're not at our lowest low quite yet. the dangerous cold is now responsible for dozens of deaths across this country. morgan rad ford ford is in lowe manhattan by a frigid hudson river. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we can barely feel our fingers out here. it is less than 10 degrees here in new york city. residents up and down the east coast are waking up this morning trying to clean up after those plummeting temperatures and record flooding slammed parts of the northeast. at least 39 people have been reported dead and thousands are waking up this morning without power. >> temperatures just freezing. >> reporter: the bomb cyclone is gone but the bitter cold remains. >> two layers of pants, boots, extra socks. >> reporter: as much as half the country is below freezing today. stormy mt. washington, new hampshire, expects the wind

zero. so cold, they say your eyelashes will freeze. more than three dozen people have died from exposure, accidents and medical emergencies caused by removing snow. along the massachusetts shore, a sea of ice surrounding boats and homes, forcing dramatic rescues from flooded houses. a good samaritan pulling this harbor master from the churning water. >> i saw it and said, i don't have much more time. i can't hold on anymore. >> reporter: frozen pipes burst, adding to the severe damage. at a high school parking lot, 60 cars submerged in ice are beyond repair. nationwide, 4,000 flights were cancelled during the storm. boston and new york eventually got flights off the ground friday. but in the carolinas, with little or no snow equipment, charleston and greenville airports are struggling to get operations back. it's going to take the rest of the weekend to straighten

out. >> maybe we'll fly back monday or tuesday. >> reporter: this frozen waterfall is in western new york, where wind chills could reach 30 below. it's cold enough to cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. double digit wind chills froze the water coming out of firefighter hoses. a 22-year-old died in the blaze. that arctic blast is expected to make temperatures feel as cold as 30 below zero in some parts of the country this weekend, and that cold air is expected to plummet as those temperatures drop. back to you. >> morgan radford there for us in battery park city. the big question this morning, people want to know when they're getting relief. >> it is going to last all weekend, then we'll turn the corner as we go to monday. i want to point out, when you have wind chills around 20 below, it takes 30 minutes for frostbite to kick in. cover your extremities and stay inside as much as you can. look at this, 122 million people

achieve this year. this comes after a controversial book about his administration was released. it's a book the president says is full of lies. he is attacking the author of the book once again overnight. kelly o'donnell is in the briefing room this morning. >> reporter: it is so cold outside, we're inside this morning. maybe there's some good heat going at camp david where the president is meeting with top lawmakers and several cabinet officials. one thing we know for sure, he did not leave behind his frustration over a former top aide's cooperation with the new book. he tweeted late into the night, calling steve bannon a total loser and claiming that he cried when he got fired and begged for his job. when the president left the white house friday -- >> we're going to camp david. we have a lot of things to work on, a lot of things to accomplish. >> reporter: -- he gave the cold shoulder to reporters. he'd already unleashed the heat

strategist, now derided as the leaker. sloppy steve bannon who cooperated with the headline new book "fire and fury," released four days early after the president's lawyer tried to block it. president trump insisted he gave author michael wolff zero access. i never spoke to him for book. but wolff told savannah exclusively on "today." >> i absolutely spoke to the president. whether he realized it was an interview or not, i don't know. >> reporter: wolff writes that trump's inner circle questions his fitness to serve. >> let me put a marker in the sand here. 100% of the people around him. >> reporter: but not secretary of state rex tillerson, who said that assertion does not apply to him. >> i've never questioned his mental fitness. i have no reason to question his mental fitness. >> reporter: press secretary sarah sanders was on the attack. >> it is absolutely outrageous to make these types of

accusations, and it's simply untrue. >> reporter: former trump campaign aide defended the president as capable but difficult. >> does not have any mental problems. he can be difficult to work for. he's a celebrity. >> reporter: but he also admitted he probably called the president a, quote, fool, as described in the book. >> i probably did say that. he's called me worse. >> reporter: while there's so much controversy about what's in the book, about the first year of the trump white house, white house officials are trying to draw attention to things they're working on. overnight, they released some photos of the meetings at camp david. senior democrats say that the president proposed a request for $18 billion to fund his immigration border wall in exchange for trying to smooth away for some young immigrants who were brought here illegally, trying to focus on what they're planning and less about the book.

>> thank you. we are learning more about an fbi investigation into the clinton foundation. it's apparently been going on for months. this as two republican senators asked the justice department and the fbi to look into the man behind that very controversial and unsubstantiated report about the president and his ties to russia. we get more on that from nbc's jeff bennet in washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. two major developments are raising the stakes in the partisan battle over an fbi investigation involving hillary clinton and one of the congressional panels looking into russia's election meddling. investigating russia's interference in the presidential election, now turning the table, calling for a criminal investigation of christopher steel, the former british spy behind the so-called trump

it contains explosive allegations about president trump's purported links to russia. in a letter, senators chuck grassley and lindsey graham say steel may have misled federal investigators about his communications with the media about the dossier. democrats are dismissing it as a distraction from the ongoing russia probe. >> i have seen no evidence, none whatsoever that would justify this criminal referral. seems more like an effort to distract from the real priorities, what should be the priorities of the committee. >> reporter: adding to democrats outrage, a revelation that the fbi has renewed an investigation into the clinton foundation. at issue, whether clinton fawn dags d -- foundation donors received favorable treatment from the department of state when hillary clinton was secretary of state. president trump openly called for clinton to be investigated. branding his former rival crooked hillary, and tweeting, where is our

posture, sales haven't slipped. apple beat out all over manufacturers this holiday. more than 40% of activations had an "i" in front of their names. proof that despite flaws, apple still reigns. for "today," steve patterson, nbc news. a major health warning this morning concerning the flu. the centers for disease control says nearly 40 states now are reporting moderate to high flu activity. so far, the flu season, the number of cases is far higher than last year. it could get much worse. >> nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar is here with advice about how to keep you and your family safe. good morning to you. >> doctor, we hear about the flu every year. seems every year there is a problem. what's different this year? >> so there's a few ways to have a bad flu season. one is you just have increased flu activity. you're seeing more cases. the other way is to actually have a strain that's predominating that's particularly dangerous and that the vaccine doesn't

guess what? this year, we're having the perfect storm of that. increased activity. we are having a vaccine that's covering a couple of different strains. the one that's actually predominating is the one that's not covered as well by the vaccine. as you pointed out, we have over 40,000 cases that are already reported now as opposed to about 14,000 cases last year at this time. >> wow. >> which is certainly a big difference. >> here's the challenge, if you say the vaccine -- not you -- but if we hear it is 10% effective, so many people will say, fine, i won't get a flu shot. >> exactly. this is the important thing to remember. if you get a flu shot, it'll cover three or four different strains. >> okay. >> the 10% number is referring to one particular strain that's covered in the vaccines. it happens to be one of the more dangerous strains, so it is important. but the other strains are getting covered about 50% to 60%. if you get a flu shot, chances are, you're also going to be covered against the other strains. if you do get sick, even with the bad one, we believe the flu shot makes the illness less seer

>> absolutely not too late. one of the explanations for why we're seeing so many numbers right now is that perhaps the flu season has just peaked a little earlier than normal. >> okay. >> flu season lasts well into spring. we would expect cases to continue up to february. takes two weeks for the flu shot to kick in, so you can get it now. you'll get your antibodies in two weeks. you will be protected. more importantly, you'll protect other people in your community who are more vulnerable to getting sick from the flu. >> what should you do if you still get the flu? >> if you think you've come down with the flu, i would first pick up the phone and call your doctor. you want to know, should you get tested for flu? sometimes it's a false negative. you're tested, it's negative, what do you do? either get tested for the flu or get started on antiviral medicine. preferably within the first 48 hours. a couple are available. >> dr. nazigna natalie azar, th very much. dylan, another check

>> we'll see more snow move through parts of the midwest. the storm is sitting up in canada. this is going to dive down and bring some snow to areas like indianapolis, chicago, too. it's also going to pick up a little moisture from this other areas of low pressure that's going to bring rain down through oklahoma and arkansas. the combination means snow for chicago into sunday. monday, we could see a couple of lighter snow showers across the rest of the northeast. lake-effect snow will kick in, as well. it's a clipper system, so it is fast moving. we could see a quick one to two inches of snow. lake erie, lake ontario, we could see up to ten inches, especially the areas that are used to seeing the lake-effect snow. it is going to be an issue into monday morning. the rain on the southern side of this system could be pretty heavy, especially near new orleans, where we could see two to three inches of rain possible. that's a look at the weather across the country. now here's a peek out your window. >> good morning. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. it is a frigid cold start i
